Afkaruna: Indonesian Interdisciplinary Journal of Islamic Studies
Jurnal Afkaruna is an Indonesian bilingual journal published by the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. The journal publishes empirically grounded and multidisciplinary work on Islam and its related issues, spanning the history, Quranic studies, Exegesis, tradition, education, dakwah, politics, sufism, philosophy, Islamic manuscripts, Islamic economics and finance, social movements, ritual and philanthropy. Afkaruna aims to promote excellent scholarship or articles on Islam that present original findings, new ideas or concepts that result from contemporary research projects in Islamic studies, area studies (especially Southeast Asia and the Middle East), social sciences, and the humanities.

<![CDATA[This article confirms that the decision of Nahdlatul Wathan organization not to engage in the field of practical politics cannot be separated from the fact that a number of the organization’s members do the opposite. Hence, such contradic-tion may lead to a conflict of interest between the organization’s missions, which are to solely focus on three main domains of activities: education, social transfor-mation, and dakwah islamiyah, with a number of practically engaging members in politics who may take advantage of their Nahdlatul Wathan organizational posi-tion to raise voters. Apart from their mission statement, Nahdlatul Wathan al-ways takes a strategic position in the political culture of West Nusa Tenggara. This can be observed from three aspects: (1) the supported political party, (2) the owned social capital and (3) the massive organization’s role. Based on these three aspects, the Nahdlatul Wathan and a number of its members always participate in assuming legislative and executive powers.]]>

<![CDATA[Buku The Expeditions: An Early Biography of Muhammad pada dasarnya adalah kitab al-Maghazi yang ditulis oleh Ma’mar ibn Rasyid. Sebagaimana sub-judulnya yang bermakna sebuah biografi awal Nabi Muhammad SAW, kemunculan buku ini potensial mengejutkan bagi banyak peminat sejarah Nabi Muhammad SAW. Hal ini disebabkan karena secara umum, para peminat sejarah Nabi Muhammad SAW lebih mengenal kitab sirah nabawiyah Ibnu Ishaq, al-Maghazi al-Waqidi, maupun Thabaqat al-kubra Ibnu Sa’ad sebagai sumber sejarah Nabi SAW terawal yang masih dapat dibaca dewasa ini.Buku-buku sejarah Nabi SAW yang kontemporer biasanya juga tidak mencantumkan al-Maghazi karya Ma’mar ibn Rasyid sebagai salah satu sumber rujukan. Hal ini juga yang menyebabkan al-Maghazinya Ma’mar ibn Rasyid tidak begitu dikenal oleh para peminat sejarah Nabi Muhammad SAW. Oleh sebab itu, diterbitkannya The Expeditions oleh New York Uni- versity Press menjadi sebuah momentum untuk mengenali kitab ini sekaligus menambah referensi sejarah Nabi Muhammad SAW dari sumber yang terawal.]]>

<![CDATA[Surau is an Islamic education institution that is the prototype of other Islamic educational institutions in Minangkabau. Historically, the existence of surau began to decline due to modernization which permeated the Islamic world. The evolution of the Islamic education system from halaqah to classical, changes in curriculum, levels in the world of education, mixing of Islamic education with basic colonial lessons and so on are the effects of modernization and the development of the technology industry in the early 20th century and the millennial era today. The evolution of Islamic education in Minangkabau is caused by several factors, including the modernization of ideology and the influence of culture from other regions, the developing system of government, and the rapid advances in industrial technology. The method used is library research with historical and philological approaches.]]>

<![CDATA[The number of Muslims in the United States is increasing from year to year as a result of the increasing number of immigrants from Muslim countries who come to work and continue their education as well as the increasing number of Muslims. One of the problems faced by the Muslim community in America today is Islamophobia such as bad narratives, discrimination, and violence against Muslims and their property. This study will examine the role of the Muslim community in America in dealing with the phenomenon of Islamophobia by explaining its strategy through the concept of Non-Governmental Organizations. The data used in this study is literature collected online from websites of Islamic groups in the United States. The results of this study showed that Islamic groups have taken many ways to deal with Islamophobia in this country, namely through political and legal advocacy, media relations, education, and campaigns to garner support and introduce Islam in American society.]]>

<![CDATA[In the world of Sufism, Dzu al-Nun al-Mishri is regarded as the father of al- ma’rifah. For him, al-ma’rifah is essential knowledge, by which some one is able to see God with the heart. Meanwhile, scientific knowledge cannot attain to the ulti- mate level. In order too reach the level of al-ma’rifah, someone has to pass asceticism by leaving behind the luxuries of life and always worshiping God . It is believed that when someone’s soul is clean of dirt, it is ready to accept al-faidh (abundance of God’s bless), or people can get to level al-ma’rifah by experiencing al-kasysyaf and ilham given by God. In sufism tradition, not everyone can reach the level of al- ma’rifah. A Sufi who has reached to the level of al-ma’rifah will have signs: 1) al- Ma’rifah always enlightening all his attitudes and actions; 2) He dos not make decisions based on real facts, because the concept of truth is Sufism is not based on real facts; 3) He does not show much expectation to God’s gift, because too much favors can laed to unlawful acts]]>

<![CDATA[This article examines the fatwas of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Cuncil) on the recitation of translation during the Prayer. The MUI fatwas were in response to the new trend of reading Indonesian language during prayer among Indonesian Muslims. In Islam, the practice of worship (praying) has been regulated by and based on the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad Saw. Debates over the issues whether or not praying can be performed in local language arose when Muhammad Yusman Roy form Surabaya initiated the practice of praying by reciting Bahasa Indonesia instead of Arabic. The author presents different views among classical Islamic scholars (ulama) about the translation of shalat recitation and explains why the MUI has forbid this practice in the Indonesian context. <![CDATA[The objective of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of Islamic microfinance distri- bution and its impact on microbusiness owners’ poverty alleviation in Purworejo. This study used descriptive analysis method that is Likert scale and ordinary least square method (OLS) to analyze the influence of Islamic Microfinance Institution’s financing to microbusiness performance. The impact on the poverty alleviation is indicated by the change of microbusiness owners’ income. The results indicate that Islamic micro-financing is con- sidered to be effective in several aspects, they are proposal aspect, disbursement aspect, utilization aspect, and pay-back aspect of financing. In addition, Islamic microfinance has a positive impact on microbusiness performance and poverty alleviation.]]>
