Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. It has also been reported to be associated with systemic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Although scaling and root planing and other non-surgical periodontal therapies remain the mainstays of treatment, clinical outcomes may be limited by persistent inflammation and residual subgingival deposits. This has led to the exploration and investigation of adjuvant approaches. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), possess well-established anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. These compounds can enhance periodontal repair by modulating host immune responses and supporting tissue regeneration. As dietary supplements, the compounds are generally safe, affordable, and easily accessible. Therefore, this scoping review aims to map and synthesise evidence regarding the use of omega-3 fatty acids as adjunctive therapy in periodontitis, particularly in immune modulation and periodontal tissue regeneration. The study procedures were carried out in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines Although clinical evidence remains limited, current studies suggest beneficial effects when omega-3 supplementation is combined with conventional periodontal therapy.   Keyword: Omega-3, adjunctive therapy for periodontitis, periodontal tissue regeneration

Abstract

dontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is a cyst lesion characterized by potential for malignant transformation, high recurrence potential, and occurrence as multiple lesions. Malignant transformation is mainly associated with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS), also known as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the PTCH1 tumor suppressor gene (TSGs). PTCH1 mutation may contribute to alterations in certain TSGs, such as p16 and p53, leading to dysregulation of cell cycle control, especially in the G1-S phase. These alterations impair DNA repair mechanisms, promote abnormal apoptotic processes, and facilitate malignant progression, thereby contributing to the aggressive behavior of OKC. Abstract

Acrylic resin denture elements are popular due to their good aesthetics and economic value. However, their hydrophilic nature causes water absorption which can affect surface roughness. Red ginger drink contains phenolic compounds and is acidic. These compounds can diffuse into the acrylic resin matrix and break the polymer chain, potentially triggering surface damage. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the duration of immersion of conventional and intrahomogeneous polymer acrylic resin denture elements in red ginger drink for 3, 5, and 7 days on surface roughness. The laboratory experimental study used conventional and intrahomogeneous polymer acrylic denture elements samples (n = 40). The samples were divided into 4 treatment groups (each n = 10). The control group was immersed in artificial saliva, while the treatment group was immersed in red ginger drink. Surface roughness measurements were performed using a profilometer. Data were analyzed statistically using the Generalized Linear Model Repeated Measures (GLM-RM) test. The results showed a significant effect of the duration of immersion of acrylic denture elements in red ginger drink for 3, 5, and 7 days on the increase in surface roughness of both types of materials (p < 0.001). Conventional acrylic dentures showed a greater level of surface roughness compared to intra-homogeneous polymers, both in the control group and after immersion in the red ginger drink solution. Abstract

Maintaining healthy teeth and periodontal tissues is strongly dependent on effective oral hygiene, but physical act of toothbrushing can be significantly hindered by limitations in hand function. Issues such as diminished handgrip strength, joint stiffness, persistent pain, and reduced manual dexterity often make thorough cleaning a challenge. Therefore, this literature review aimed to evaluate how the specific hand function limitations impact general toothbrushing efficacy and plaque control. Data were collected from PubMed and Google Scholar for analysis on English and Indonesian articles published over the past decade. The compiled evidence showed that poor handgrip strength and limited dexterity directly correlated with heavier plaque accumulation, increased risks of periodontitis, and compromised oral self-care habits. These challenges were particularly prevalent among older populations and individuals managing musculoskeletal or systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Recognizing hand function limitations as a critical determinant of oral health showed the urgent need for more adaptive, customized oral hygiene strategies.

Abstract

Traumatic ulcer is open wound caused by injury to the oral mucosa. Fibronectin, a multifunctional glycoprotein, has been reported to play a crucial role in early wound healing by promoting fibroblast migration. Several studies have shown that Manalagi apple (Malus sylvestris Mill.) contains bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and wound healing properties. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of Manalagi apple extract gel on fibronectin expression in traumatic ulcer healing. This was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design. A total of 10 rats (Rattus norvegicus) were randomly divided into a placebo gel control group and a treatment group receiving 10% Manalagi apple extract gel. Fibronectin expression was then evaluated using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, and analyzed with the Mann–Whitney test. The results showed a significant difference in fibronectin expression between the treatment and control groups (p = 0.007). The application of 10% Manalagi apple extract gel significantly increased fibronectin expression during traumatic ulcer healing.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is a significant health concern, particularly in postmenopausal women due to hormonal changes affecting immune response and bone metabolism. This study reviews non-invasive biomarkers for detecting and monitoring disease severity through a literature search in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct (2015–2025). Five studies found that biomarkers such as salivary cytokines, calcium, estradiol, calprotectin, and serum markers are significantly associated with periodontal clinical parameters. These biomarkers show potential for early detection and personalized management, although further research is still needed.

Abstract

Childhood dental trauma leads to long-term complications that affect pulp health and subsequent orthodontic treatment outcomes. Therefore, this case report concerns a 19-year-old male with protruding maxillary anterior teeth and midline diastema subjected to orthodontic treatment following root canal analysis of the traumatized maxillary central incisor. Orthodontic treatment was initiated after six months of observation. Root length changes were evaluated using the relative root–crown ratio (rRCR) on pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs. After 18 months of treatment, significant improvements in tooth consistency, overjet, and overbite were observed. Mild inflammatory root resorption was reported in both teeth due to orthodontic movement, with a greater degree in the important tooth compared to the root canal-treated part. The results showed that orthodontic movement in root canal-treated teeth could be safely performed with controlled force application and appropriate treatment timing. There were no signs of clinical or radiographical ankylosis during treatment, allowing orthodontic tooth movement to proceed without significant complications.

Abstract

Hemophilia A, a hereditary bleeding disorder caused by factor VIII deficiency, often leads to prolonged bleeding during oral conditions and invasive dental procedures. This case report shows that poor oral hygiene and adverse oral habits can be influenced by underlying systemic conditions, showing the importance of comprehensive patient evaluation and multidisciplinary management. A 38-year-old man was referred to the Oral Medicine Clinic with complaints of painless spontaneous gingival bleeding in the left upper jaw accompanied by poor oral hygiene. The patient was not taking any routine medications at the time of presentation but underwent cryotherapy periodically since teenager, with the most recent treatment performed in 2013. Laboratory examination showed a normal platelet count, mild leukocytosis, and a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time, showing a high risk of bleeding. The patient was prescribed chlorhexidine mouthwash by the Oral Medicine Clinic to help control plaque and gingival inflammation. Successful dental management of hemophilia A patients depends on stabilization of hemostasis, prevention of oral inflammation, and good collaboration between the dentist and hematologist before any invasive procedure is performed.

Abstract

Manual identification of panoramic radiographs has limitations due to distortion, superimposition, and individual anatomical variations, so more objective supporting technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) is needed. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of AI detection performance in determining anatomical landmarks in panoramic radiographs. This descriptive study used a purposive sampling method. A total sample of 653 radiographs was used. The radiographs were labeled at nine anatomical landmarks and then analyzed using the YOLOv8 deep learning algorithm. The level of AI detection performance was evaluated using precision, sensitivity (recall), and F1-Score parameters in percentage form. The results showed variations in the level of AI detection performance for each anatomical landmark. The highest detection performance was in the condyloid process, while the mental foramen showed the lowest detection performance. In conclusion, AI shows a high level of detection performance in determining anatomical structures in the jaw and this can be used to assist clinicians in detecting the presence of these anatomical structures.

Abstract

The target of root canal treatment is to eliminate infected pulp tissue and preserve tooth function. Instrumentation produces a smear layer composed of organic and inorganic debris, which may promote microbial colonization and reduce sealer adhesion. Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) 17% is widely used for smear layer removal but may cause periapical tissue toxicity, suggesting the need for safer natural alternatives. Clove leaf extract (Syzygium aromaticum) contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, steroids, and alkaloids that may aid in smear layer removal. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of clove leaf extract in removing the smear layer from root canals. The extract was prepared using the maceration method and tested at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%, with 17% EDTA used as the control group. The smear layer cleanliness was evaluated with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the 20% clove leaf extract group and the 17% EDTA group (p > 0.05). The 20% concentration showed comparable effectiveness to 17% EDTA in removing the smear layer from root canals.
