Abstract

This paper examines a song criticizing the phenomenon that occurs in the body of the government of Indonesia nowadays. Lyric of a song ABC (Ada Banyak Cara) by Trio Bimbo that becomes the focus of study in this paper is interesting to be studied, considering the Trio Bimbo is famous musicians who focused on religious themes, voicing out his heart in criticizing the government. The discourse theory of Michel Foucault,in which his discourse of language is closely related to who is in power in the region, is used to analyze this song. The result founds that the discourse of language in the ABC song is representation the mercy of the people, in this case represented by Trio Bimbo sound, such as naikkan gaji sendiri, duduk sidang terus mimpi, jaksa hakim wiraswasta, and other discordant expressions that criticize the government. Trio Bimbo does not hesitate to cast his criticism of the government by voicing the discourse of language which is considered as a direct criticism, without the subtle innuendo. If this happens in the Orde Baru era, the discourse of language must be prohibited by the government, because they were in power at that time. However, after the fall of Orde Baru, resime people have the power to create their own linguistic discourse.

Abstract

The Crusade taking place during two centuries (10951291 AD) was the beginning of largescale confrontation between Islam and Western Christianity. Although the Crusades ended eight centuries ago, but it still lingers in the mind of Western Christians and some Muslims. The subsequent conflcts between both sides have been always linked to the Crusades. For example, colonialism and imprealism of Western to the East during the 18th, 19th, and 20th century is considered as a continuation of the Crusades. In addition, the war against terrorism that the United States campaigned for the post September 11, 2001 propagated as the 2nd Crusades. Similarly, the invasion of the United States and its allies against Iraq and Afghanistan is refering the arrogances of West against Islam. These facts indicate that a huge trauma caused by the Crusades still entrenched in the minds of most of the psychohistorical Western and Muslim. Therefore, to promote a harmonious relationship between the West and Islam, the perceptions and negative images of Islam in the eyes of the West and vice versa, should be neutralized. The history has proven that when peace and truce conducted during the period of the Crusades, both parties could work together in trade and economy. In the current global context, the cooperation must be expanded. Through good cooperation and mutual benefi, suspicion and prejudice to each other will eventually fade.

Abstract

Indonesian development policy which tends to focus on the growth model has implied on the high concentration of city development. Cities, in fact, fially become spaces where city dwellers and city new comers tightly complete each other to grab the available capital. The qualifid new comers who possess good competence are able to survive in the city. Those people will be able to enjoy the delicious economic cakes which are abundantly scattered. However, the incompetent new comers may only taste the remnants of the economic cake. That is the most rational choice for the incompetent. According to Max Weber, this phenomenon shows an instrumental social action. It means that the measurement ofprofi and loss has been the most important part of their actions. Indeed, most of the new comers do not have special competence. They only depend on their physical strength in order to survive. In Karl Marx’s terminology, an individual who does not possess an ability to control the production factors (for example: natural resources, human resources, capital) will only depend on their body (physical strength) in order to survive. Therefore the informal sectors become the most rational choice. Hence street vendors, construction workers, parking attendants and other informal jobs have been the common views in the cities. This paper is trying to portray one of the informal sectors in the cities namely street vendors. Their survival strategy in the competitive city life is a point of view which is being explained and focused in this paper.

Abstract

A social relation in the form of patronclient has been living for a long time in A social relation in the form of patronclient has been living for a long time in human live. No wonder if there is almost no sector or aspect of human live in the earth which is untouched by this relational pattern. For instance; agricultural, holticultural or fihing sectors are also inflenced by this patronage relation. Many experts defie that the relational pattern of patronclient as the integrated relation between individual each other or groups and individuals or other groups in which one party’s position is as a patron or a boss while the other party’s position is as a client or a staff. This relational pattern has been done by many people those who involved in it through goods or services exchanging. A patron usually has resources which are badly needed by their clients. Soon after that they exchange one another with the other goods or services they have, for instance. This relational pattern has been living though the benefi obtained is not the same. Even it tends to make a party’s position as a patron that gets benefi more than it’s client. This writing discusses about the pattern and the form of patronclient relation in managing rubber holticultural in Rantau Limau Manis Village, Jambi. Also discusses the determining factors of the continuing patronclient relation in managing rubber agricultural in this village. From this discussion the writer gets the fact that a patron client relation in managing the rubber agricultural in this village is performed by exchanging resources from the owner of the garden of rubber holticultural with the rubber wiretapping services from the rubber wiretapper. This relational pattern has been living until they get the benefi respectively, both material and nonmaterial. Though from the outside perspective, this is unbalance, but people those who involved expecially the clients, in this business are not aware. Even they get more benefi from this. However, the writer fids the fact that there are four factors become the determiner of the continuing of this relational pattern; the limiting of alternative jobs, the expensive of rubber price, the applying of paternalistic feudal system in the society and the mastering of rubber holticultural from certain people. These four determining factors are related each other so that the relational pattern of patronage have been still standing and developing in the society until now.

Abstract

Institutionally, the Indonesian National Military (TNI) in the New Order era dominated the social and political system in Indonesia. The domination ended by the falling of the Soeharto regime and the emergence of the Reformation era. Nevertheless, the TNI has not undertaken cultural reformation especially on the military-cultural personnel although institutionally it has done so. On the military-cultural personnel aspect, the TNI personnel culture is still dominated by the long-existing feudalistic. This work, therefore, focuses on the practices of discipline, loyalty and militancy as the three basics of the culture of the TNI personnel. To discuss the issue, this project employs the agency and structure of Anthony Giddens and habitus of Pierre Bourdieu theories for analytical purposes.

Abstract

The student resistance to the authority is a history that cannot be separated from the long journey of each country. Student involvement in the process of changes for their nation in every movement of history cannot be denied. Students as intellectual get a job to be responsible for the social and economic situation of the political nation. History has many notes that the changes in social systems, economics, and politics in many countries are the outcome of the intellectuals that was pioneered by the students. Role of students in Indonesia is not a stranger within each change. The achievement of the independence of Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of students who at the time as one of the component of who participated inside. Various resistances of students against the college policy has always colored the dynamics of college life, this is what later became the base of growing various movement organizations in Yogyakarta, even in the progress up to now only UIN, which still survive dialectical process of the student movement. That is the background theme of this research. The research was done at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This study uses Michel Foucault’s theory of power relations and knowledge, as well as his theory of resistances  JC scott. The method used is a descriptive of qualitative, while the techniques of data collection be done in several ways, namely direct observation (direct observation), participation (direct participation), interview (interview), and document analysis. Techniques of data analysis is started by studying all of the data acquired, reducing the data by creating an abstraction, coding (categorizing data), reconstruction (rearrangements), and fially to do the interpretation ofthe obtained data. The results of this study indicate that the resistances of students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga formed the background by two factors, objective and subjective factors. Objectively factor is the situation of national education that has capitalised and also has affected to the dynamics life in the UIN Sunan Kalijaga. More subjective factors refers to the awareness of students about the role of their social position as a student, as the agents of change and agents of control. A blend of value awareness with objective facts that are inconsistent with expectation later gave birth to resistance. Resistance becomes the biological child of a student combination awareness of the objective situation in education. Meanwhile, a form of resistance has performed by students existing two kinds, in an organized and individually. The organized forms such as: long march action, rector occupation, free speech, as well as publishing leaflts. Whereas resistance is performed by an individual for example: through the articles sent to mass media, mass media both in the form of a daily newspaper and news media students in the internal UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.
