Abstract

: Literature is often considered as a reflection of society’s real life. It also depicts some life’s aspect such as social, culture, thought, and belief. In Lu Xun’s “New Year’s Sacrifice”, those aspects are represented in words, sentences, and paragraphs. To get a deeper comprehension of it, people need to understand signs and symbols which author used. This paper aims to explain how literature can describe Chinese traditional culture and thought, especially about women, with semiotic approach by identifying any sign used in it. The result of this research shows that Chinese women are inferior in society. They are not worthy unless able to bear a son, so the continuation of the husband’s family can be preserved. Besides, women in China have to live with so many rules and obligations that society has created for them.

Abstract

English learning in Indonesia share the same central characteristics of foreign language learning which lies in the amount and type of exposure to the language: there will be very little experience of the language outside the classroom, and encounters with the language will be through several hours of teaching in a school week. This paper as a result of a research describing the way the young learners negotiate meanings through their choices of speech functions and the realization of those speech functions through the choices of mood after they are being treated at school. The corpus of the data of this research is a stretch of approximately sixty-minutes dialogue between 5 primary school children and their teacher; the speech functions are categorized based on the Speech Function Network developed by Eggins and Slade (1997). It is found that children learning English as a foreign language can perform similar speech functions as adult in their spoken interaction. With the support from adult (teacher) and the proper environment, children whose native language is Indonesian and started to learn English when they were at school ages are able to interact with others, convey message and share ideas using English. They can also realize the speech functions into an organized and logical system of mood.

Abstract

Giving command to other people should consider many things: choice of word, context of situation and social context. Those can help us, both as speaker or writer, avoid the rudeness and threaten other's face. This paper is intended to take term "politeness" into account within some examples of sentences formed in notices. The samples are taken from two different places in Singapore: in a guest house and in mosque. Those notices are analyzed using "face" concept by showing the strategy used by the writer in both places. The result shows the writers from the two places use different strategy in commanding the reader. At guests house, the writer uses indirectness and give positive face to the reader. In this point, the writer tries to be close to the reader, decrease the distance between them. In the other side, the notices found in a mosque use imperative sentence. This form of sentence contains directive, asking the reader to do something directly. Based on the form and content of sentences in those notices, the readers will be potentially threatened. For that reason, the writer does FTA in most of notices.
