Abstract

This study examines how a Malaysian opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, flouted the Grice's (1975) maxims during the interview in Kick Andy show. The talk show was aired in 2007 when Indonesia and Malaysia were on political dispute caused by the abusive behaviour of some Malaysians towards Indonesian domestic migrant workers. The results illustrate that the interviewee did not simply answer the questions as commonly expected, but rather flouted frequently. Several strategies of flouting the maxims such as giving overstatements, understatements, hints, and figure of speech were used. Throughout the show, it appeared that Anwar wanted the audience to believe that Malaysian government allegation (corruption and sodomy) towards him was groundless. He also showed his support for Indonesian workers and raised the issue without being asked. In this case, Anwar flouted the maxims not only to raise implicature but also to serve his particular goals as a politician, i.e. to establish a positive image. Keywords: implicature, maxims, opposition, politician, talk-show

Abstract

It is important to do analysis on errors made by L2 learners. First, it is aimed at finding out why they made errors. Second, it is useful for teachers to know what errors the learners made. Third, it is possible that making errors may actually help learners to learn when they self-correct the errors they made (Ellis, 2000 :15). After learning Chinese language for seven semesters, the learners from one of universities in West Java still also made language errors. This article discusses the type of errors the learners made according to linguistics category taxonomy, surface strategy taxonomy, and communicative effect taxonomy, and the factors that cause those errors. The subjects of this research are the seven semester students learning Chinese language at one of universities in West Java. The results showed that, in writing ‘Han’ characters, the errors mostly made by the learners are those related to morphology and syntax. Most of these errors are local ones so they don’t create misuderstanding. Besides, the global errors are also dominant. The factor influencing these errors is the one related to the learners’ mother tongue, Indonesian language or interlanguage errors. Keywords: Chinese language, error analysis, interlanguage errors.

Abstract

From the previous research entitled “Analisis Pelafalan Karakter ? dalam Kumpulan Lagu Terbaik yang Dinyanyikan oleh Andy Lau”, it was found that the pronunciation of the characters ? changes variously into [t?] and [ti], which is caused by two factors, namely the position of the tongue (the rise and fall of the tongue), and factors of high and low tones. This study is a qualitative one aiming at describing the pronunciation of the character ?“DE” in the Chinese songs sung by Teresa Teng. In this study, the author took data from the songs sung by Teresa Teng, one of the legendary singers from Taiwan. In the songs, there is a phenomenon that is similar to what happened in the songs sung by Andy Lau, namely a change in the pronunciation of the characters ? was pronounced into [ti]. A professional singer certainly would apply the technique of good improvisation, to create harmonization between the tone and the lyrics of the song. This study used grammatical and phonological review to assess what kind of character ? pronunciation in the songs sung by Teresa Teng, then examined the factors that affect the pronunciation of the characters ?. The result showed that out of 22 samples taken from 10 songs sung by Teresa Teng, there is only one case that the character ?“DE” was pronounced into [t?], while the other 21 sampes were pronounced into [ti]. Compared to the previous research, it can be said that the position of the tongue and high and low tones don’t give the significant effect to the pronounciation of the character ?.

Abstract

Suggestopedia is a method of teaching a foreign language in which students learn quickly by being made to feel relaxed, interested and positive. The method is developed  because of the argument that students naturally face psychological barriers to learning. The psychological barriers here refer to a variety of internal distractions (worry, anxiety, fatigue, boredom, fear, etc.). Suggestopedia uses four main stages as follows: presentation, active concert, passive concert, and practice. The design of suggestopedic instruction has positive cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social effects on the learners. Keywords: Suggestopedia, suggestopedic instruction, active concert, passive concert, psychological barriers.

In DO, one of the English teachers acted out as a model teacher and the rest observed the teaching and learning process targeting learner activities as the angle of the observation practices. In SEE, the participants were engaged in reflecting the teaching learning process. Two techniques: observation and interview were utilized to obtain data from the participants. The result of the study shows that 10 English teachers involved in the study got direct pedagogical competence through the implementation of Lesson Study. Abstract

This article discusses an introduction to the new teaching system in the speaking classroom. This system is known as the Effortless English System. It is a system which relies much on listening activity. In recent years, most English students in schools have been stuck on a grammar-translation method. In practice, the students focus more on grammar rules teaching and translation. The results of this method show no improvement to their speaking skills. They tend to always think and translate before they speak. It obviously prevents them from being fluent and confident when speaking to other English students or to native speakers. On the other hand, Effortless English system teaches the students with fun and interesting stories. The system does not teach grammar rules consciously and analytically, instead it uses mini-story lessons to learn grammar intuitively. The major focus on this system is learning to speak by listening not by speaking. Speaking is optional after one listens to a lot of comprehensible inputs to his/her brain. Forced speaking is not recommended because it may damage final results. Listening to things that are always right will build the language right while saying things that are always wrong will build it wrong. The key to excellent speaking is listen to one thing many times not listen to many things one time. If students follow these rules, they will end up speaking English like a native. Abstract

This research is aimed to find out and describe deictic analysis in ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns in Japanese. This research is a library study, in which the writer took reference and data from the internet, books, and dictionary. The source of the data was manga de manabu Nihongokaiwajutsu (Japanese comics), taken from 1 - 12 edition of Nihongo Jaanaru. The writer employed pragmatic approach under the framework proposed by Takahasi, et al (2000) and Teramura (1999). The data were collected by using inventory technique (note taking). The raw data were classified based on the theory of Takahashi, et al (2000), while the unit of analysis is every sentence containing ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns. The data were then analyzed cataphorically and anaphorically through the aforementioned framework. The result shows that the use of ko-so-a demonstrative pronouns are based on the physical location of referred thing or person, the contextual position of thing or person, and the shared knowledge toward referred thing or person. In addition, the writer also found empatitive deixis, i.e where the speaker’s emotion influences the use of ko-so-a pronouns. This, however, violates the theory of Takahashi, Teramura and Yuuji. Abstract

Morphological process in English language may occur inflectionally or derivationally. The main difference between inflection and derivation is that inflection does not make a new lexeme but a grammatical word with respect to syntactic rules; however, derivation makes a new lexeme which is lexically different from its base. In English language, derivation may occur through prefixation, suffixation, conversion, and compounding besides other morphological processes such as back formation, reduplication, clipping, acronym, and blending.   Keywords:derivation, inflection, lexical word, grammatical word, morphological processes
