Abstract

This paper entitled “Keterperjaraan Pikiran sebagai Comfort Zone dan Ketakutan Perubahan sebagai Mental Block yang Tercermin dalam Novel ‘The Cave’ Karya Jose Saramago” emerges primary signifier representing other signs, and dimension relationship of syntagm and paradigm realized in the novel “The Cave”. Theapproaches used to solve the problem are intrinsic and semiotic approaches. The methods of data collecting are library research and documentation. The presentation of data processing result is descriptive research report. The result this paper is solution from signification analysis consisting of the significance of the sign “Goa”as icon, index, and symbol and the scheme of syntagm and paradigm dimension relationship and their significance. Seen from the relationship, writer finds the message in story that is two matters which sometime cannot go together; those are tradition and modernization, because during civilized historical journey of human being, the modernization often breaks the tradition. The challenge is how to make them coexisting and accepting each other. Modernization or become modern will be able to be accepted and can become the change for the world if sustained by tradition, moreover, if the tradition has been owned and has grown on its nation.Keywords: primary signifier, icon, index, symbol, paradigm, syntagm.

Abstract

This simple research article is about a philosophy of language on the Indonesian subjective third-person singular pronouns DIA and IA and their probable equivalents in the English language. The philosophy involves discussions on the nature of meaning of DIA and IA, the use of DIA and IA, the cognition of DIA and IA, and the relationship between DIA and IA and reality in Indonesian context. English probable equivalents are analyzed and elaborated to contribute a conclusion on new forms and functions of the subjective pronouns DIA and IA in Indonesian context. This article is more of philosophy rather than of discourse analysis, as it draws our attention to the fact that language use is, indeed, a matter of probability which later may evolve into being or a reality, i.e. the forms and functions of DIA and IA in formal use as well as practical use in Indonesian context.Keywords: Subjective Pronouns, Third-Person Singular Pronouns, Indonesian Subjective Third-Person Singular Pronouns, English Subjective Third-Person Singular Pronouns, Word Equivalents

Abstract

In the process of English learning either as foreign language or second language, several students still encounter some problems in pronouncing English front vowels. This study is aimed at describing the pronunciation errors of front vowels done by the first semester students of Timor Loorosa’e National University in Timor Leste. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The technique of data collection was conducted by recording the English front vowels minimal pairs pronounced by the students and the Portugese native speakers, then they were compared with the ones of English native speakers. The results of the recording were verified by the spectogram to know the F1 and F2 forman produced by each participant in Praat software. The focus of this study are four English front vowels /i/, /I/, /Ԑ/ dan /æ/. The results showed that the student and Portugese native speaker pronunciations of English front vowels are different from the standart pronounced by the English native sspeakers. The examples are in the words beat/bit/ - bit/bIt/ and bed/bԐd/ - bad/bæd/. The problems occuring in this study are caused by sound and grammar interference that influence the English vowel pronunciation of the students. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the students still have problems inpronouncing English front vowels because they are influenced by the pronunciation system of Portugese.Keywords: English front vowels, language interference, pronunciation errors, the first semester students Timor Lorasa’e National University.

Abstract

A verbal spoken communication (conversation) is considered successful when the speaker and listener can understand each other. Unlike children who easily master their native language, adult foreign language learners, although they have learned and practiced the foreign language for years, are in general not able to use thelanguage even for basic communication purposes. To get the success of a conversation people can use gambits (words and phrases that serve regulate the smooth flow of a conversational talk). Although gambits do not have meaning in the traditional sense of the words, they are a very important part of conversational behavior.In this study the data were obtained from a conversation between an Indonesian girl and a Dutch man who was staying in Indonesia for a visit. TheIndonesian girl had an assignment to interview a foreigner who was staying in Indonesia. The interviewer’s English is in intermediate level. The finding shows that the four main functions of gambits are demonstrated in the conversation, consisting mainly state consciousness signal which is demonstrated twelve times, semanticframing (eight times), communication control signals (six times), and the last signaling of social context (twice).Key words: conversational strategy signals, state consciousness signal, semantic framing, communication control signals, signaling of social context

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the code mixing in Japanese songs using sociolinguistic approach. It describes the form of code mixing, the cause of code mixing in Japanese songs, and the influence of code mixing to the development of Weinreich language. The data analysed in this study are the sentences containing code mixing sung and composed by Ai Carina in Don’t Stop album. Those data were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative technique based on Suwito’s theory of code mixing, Bhatia and Ritchie’s code mixing influencing factors, and Weinreich and Mackey’s influence of code mixing. The resuts showed that the form of code mixing found in the songs are mostly outer code mixing in the form of clause. The factors influencing the code mixing are the desire to adapt the texts and the melody, as the emphasis of the story, as the tone appropriateness, to show the formal situation, to give the intrinsic message to the listeners, and to give emphasis to certain field. The influences of code mixing are dominantly in the form of interference in sentence level, they are word, phrase, and clause.Keywords : code mixing, interference, integration, influencing factors, sociolinguistics.

Abstract

Madurese has two types of first person possessive construction, the first person possessive markers, tang and sang and the definite suffix –na. This research aims at investigating the distribution of the Madurese first person possessor variations spoken in Madura island within the scope of geographic and social dialect. Madura island has four regencies, Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep regency. Although Sumenep is considered as the cultural capital of Madura, each regency in Madura has its own political institution and various local influences. In terms of language, each regencies has its own dialect. The research relies on descriptive qualitative research with questionnaire as its main instrument. The findings shows that distribution of the Madurese first person possessor variation is governed by geographic and social factors. Geographically, tang/sang construction is used in Bangkalan and Eastern Sampang regency while the definite suffix –na construction is used in Western Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep regency. Based on social dialect, the tang/sang construction is mostly used for the low level while the definite suffix na- is used for the middle and high speech levels.Key words: possessive, madura, mamdurase, social dialect

Abstract

The paper entitled The Exorcism described in James Wan's Film, The Conjuring has an objective to describe a problem dealing with demonic possessed and exorcism. The object used here is a horror film, since the whole tension of the story is about misery and haunted. Exorcism is a spiritual practice used to help people who experiences demonic possessed. Lorraine and Ed as the main characters here are described as demonologists or paranormal investigators who help the Perron's family from the demonic possessed. The terror happened in the old haunted house in Rhode Island brings Carolyn, Peron's wife into a mental illness and it cannot be handled by a doctor's hand except a spiritual practice like exorcism. After it has been approved by the Priest of the church, finally the exorcism was done by the demonologist or paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed. They are described as the main character of the story. During the exorcism they experience both internal and external conflict and it develops becomes the potential conflict. The tension of the story is finally resolved when the main characters did the spiritual practice/the exorcism well. Abstract

Japanese people put forward a kind of politeness or indirectness, specifically referred to as enryo, in their life. Enryo is a Japanese culture that is always maintained. For Japanese, enryo controls unacceptable behaviors. Enryo can be seen in movies, dramas, or other literary works. One of the movies that show enryo is Marumo no Okite. Enryo in this movie was analyzed by using Wierzbicka’s theory. The result demonstrates that enryo deals with a semantic component as indicated by the proposition of “I cannot say/do this: “I want this, I don’t want this”. If one says/does this, he or she will get a bad thing due to his or her words/actions. Enryo is present in Japanese life because there is a feeling of reluctance when one has to deal with other people.Keywords: enryo, shame, politeness, main character

Abstract

This paper’s title is Trinities in Discovering Meaning on Literature aiming to discuss Instructional Scheme on Literary Studies. Methods of the study consist of qualitative design in explaining discourse, library research in collecting data, and problem-based approach in answering the problem statements, the three-substances of which are significant to English teaching on literary studies. Literary studies are the humanistic studies of literature and literary research is the final project for the students who are going to complete their study at notably English Literature Study Programs. Their final project must compose scientific written report. It is in the form of writing literary analysis. The most significant point to emphasize is that literary analysis is an argument about a literary work and that whatever recommendations are made throughout the interpretation from the need to write persuasively about a clear, scientific, and debatable thesis. The writing on literary analysis is getting branched out being up to date in any academic atmosphere, of course, in line with the development of theory, history, and criticism on literature. This article is an alternative way for instructional manuscript blending theoretical or conceptual ideas with practical ideas about an alternative pedagogy in the area of English literary studies teaching and research. It is designed to help teachers specialized in literature introducing the writing literary analysis to their students. I deliver this article because I am sure that the trinities in the science of literature must be comprehended by the teachers before they transmit it in the classroom activities in teaching English Literary Studies. Abstract

The research is entitled Subtitling Strategies in Real Steel Movie. This study aims at finding out the strategies employed to translate the English subtitles into Indonesian subtitles, and identifying the strategy employed the most in the translated subtitles. The unit of analysis of this research is every utterance translated using the subtitling strategies in the Real Steel movie. The source language is English, and the target language is Indonesian as the data. This research used a descriptive qualitative method because the purpose of this study is to describe the phenomena of translation, especially the subtitling strategies employed in the Real Steel movie. The results of this research show that not all the subtitling strategies were employed. There are some subtitling strategies left unemployed, they were dislocation strategy, condensation strategy, decimation strategy, and resignation strategy. The other six strategies were employed by the translator in translating English subtitles in the Real Steel movie. The results show that there are 12 (19.35%) utterances of Expansion strategy, 11 (17.74%) utterances of Paraphrase strategy, 10 (16.12%) utterances of Transfer strategy, 10 (16.12%) utterances of Imitation strategy, 1 (1.61%) utterance of Transcription strategy, and 18 (29.03%) utterances of Deletion strategy. Deletion is the strategy which was employed the most by the translator in the movie. The deletion strategy was identified through the facts that there are words in the source language not maintained in the target language. There are also words in the source language not rendered in the target language. Meanwhile, Expansion is the strategy employed the most after the Deletion strategy. The Expansion strategy was employed because the strategy was naturally proven to help the target audience understand the subtitles more easily.Keywords: Translation, Subtitles, Subtitling Strategies
