Abstract

In modern life, people cannot avoid persuasion from advertisements. Advertisers employ techniques to make claims for their products. The advertisers promise and claim in such a way that consumers may buy the products even when they do not really need them. People may disagree with and question the promises and claims of advertisements. The fact is that more consumers including students believe promises and claims in the advertisements than those who question them. Consumers who question the promises and claims of advertisements argue that advertising is childish, dumb, and a bunch of lies. This article discusses the language of advertising and how advertisers persuade and argue. To clarify the discusion, examples of claims used in the advertisements are given. The paper is ended with discussion of using advertisements for language teaching materials

Abstract

Undang-undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 2 Tahun 1989 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional menyebutkan bahwa ”Pendidikan Nasional berfungsi untuk mengembangkan serta meningkatkan mutu kehidupan dan martabat manusia Indonesia dalam rangka upaya mewujudkan tujuan nasional.” Pendidikan nasional bertujuan untuk ”mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa dan mengembangkan manusia Indonesia seutuhnya, yaitu manusia yang beriman dan bertaqwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa dan berbudi pekerti luhur, memiliki pengetahuan dan ketrampilan, kesehatan jasmani dan rohani, kepribadian yang mantap dan mandiri serta rasa tanggungjawab kemasyarakatan dan kebangsaan.” Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut setiap jalur pendidikan, baik fomal maupun non formal wajib menjamin mutu. Mutu proses dan produk pendidikan tergantung pada banyak aspek, antara lain peran kepala sekolah, dalam mengelola sekolah yang menjadi tanggung jawabnya. Makalah ini akan membicarakan model peningkatan mutu pendidikan berbasis sekolah.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to find out whether there is a correlation between intrinsic motivation and speaking proficiency. The correlation research was conducted with the assistance of a motivational questionnaire and speaking proficiency level as the instruments. Twenty nine respondents, who were the students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, participated in the research. They took part in filling out the questionnaire and giving out their recent Speaking Class grade. The data gathered were soon correlated using Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient formula. The findings show that there is a moderate correlation between intrinsic motivation and speaking proficiency. Having Intrinsic Motivation in the process of learning a foreign/second language helps people to achieve better speaking proficiency. And through the research, the writer suggests that motivation is indeed an important factor for the success of language learning and acquisition in all aspects and skills; therefore, educators and learners should perceive the importance of being intrinsically motivated. The writer also suggests that in the future time, there should be deeper researches regarding the types of motivation, as well as the orientations of motivation.

Abstract

This case study was conducted to explore the speech modification by science teachers in presenting science in English. There were two subjects, science teachers at the third and fourth grade levels. The data were collected by recording the teachers’ voice while they were teaching science in their class and interview protocols. The findings show that the teachers have done some points as theoretically claimed. In focus on key words, the teachers in all meeting did not introduce the new words more than twelve. Sometimes the teachers used words with personal reference in presenting the materials. Shorter and less complex sentences were also found in their teaching even though sometimes they also used complex or long sentences. Repeating or paraphrasing sentences did not show too much. The teachers asked intersperse questions almost in all the meeting to dig students’ prior knowledge or sometimes just to review the previous lesson. Most of the feedbacks were shown when students mispronounced the words or they did not know how to spell the words. As a conclusion, when the science teachers made their language more comprehensible to their students by modifying how they talked in a number of ways, the learning process becomes effective.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of Jigsaw and GTM on second grade of senior high school students’ reading achievement. The subjects of the study used are two classes of the second grade of St. Agnes Senior High School. A quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design was used to do this research. In order to know the effects of those two techniques, the writer used the pretest posttest as the instrument with 16 multiple choice items. To calculate the data, t-test for significance of difference between two means for independent samples was used. After analyzing the data which had been collected, the writer found out that the mean of the gain scores of the experimental group was 1.68 and the control group was 0.81. The mean of the gain scores between the two groups were not significantly different. It means the students who were taught using Jigsaw technique did not have a better reading achievement than those who were taught using GTM. Introduction

Abstract

The need for the teaching of English as a foreign language in Indonesia has been felt by almost all levels of society, especially in big cities. Without realizing the schools readiness, society has put a great expectation on the success of the English teaching. In fact, the success of the English teaching is also influenced by the parents’ involvement in the school program. Parents’ involvement will be beneficial when parents and teachers have the same perception about instructional programs, including the assessment of the students’ achievement. The study proves that parents and teachers have similar perceptions of some aspects of the English achievement assessment but different perceptions of other aspects of the assessment. In some respects, such as the function of test, the types of tests used to assess students’ English achievement, parents and English teachers are of the same perception. In other respects, however, such as the level of difficulty, the validity of the test, and the materials covered in the test, they are of different perception. This mismatch of perception may cause problems for the teachers, parents, and students.

Abstract

Dalam pelaksanaan percobaan gerak lurus di laboratorium, seringkali ditemui perhitungan yang rumit karena adanya gesekan. Untuk menghindari kerumitan tersebut, perlu suatu alat yang dapat mengurangi gaya gesekan yang terjadi. Alat tersebut adalah Linear Air Track. Linear Air Track merupakan suatu alat yang menyediakan lintasan lurus, sehingga dapat digunakan untuk percobaan gerak lurus. Alat ini dilengkapi dengan blower untuk mengurangi gaya gesekan itu. Pada percobaan gerak lurus, Linear Air Track akan didayagunakan dengan dua cara, yaitu cara foto elektrik dan cara fotografi. Tetapi apakah kedua cara tersebut dapat menunjukan jenis gerak lurus dari sebuah benda yang melaju, yaitu gerak lurus beraturan atau gerak lurus berubah beraturan. Kedua cara tersebut dapat digunakan untuk menentukan jenis gerak lurus, apabila dari data jarak dan waktu yang didapat, menghasilkan grafik kedudukan (x) terhadap waktu (t) yang sesuai dengan teori gerak lurus. Untuk menguji kecocokan garis dengan titik pencar yang didapat dari data, maka dapat dilihat dari koefisien korelasinya (R). Semakin R mendekati 1, maka semakin cocok garis dengan titik pencar yang didapat dari data. Dan untuk mengetahui batasan minimum cocok tidaknya garis dengan titik pencar, maka akan di uji dengan menggunakan uji R dan uji F. Dari hasil percobaan, koefisien korelasi (R) dari cara foto elektrik adalah 0.99975, 0.99925, 0.998749, 1, 1 dan dari cara fotografi adalah 0.9998, 0.99995, 0.99995. Hasil yang didapatkan sangat mendekati 1 bahkan ada yang sempurna bernilai 1. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa cara foto elektrik dan cara fotografi dapat digunakan untuk menentukan jenis gerak lurus suatu benda yang sedang melaju.

Abstract

The language mostly used by the subjects when they worked in Singapore is English. However, the writer found that many subjects of the study under report were still influenced by their mother tongue, in this case Bahasa Indonesia, and also by their employer in the past. This condition made those subjects often produce wrong sentences. The situations above motivated the writer to conduct a study on analyzing the subjects’ errors in spoken English. In gaining the data, the writer used a small tape recorder to record all the interviews spontaneously answered by the subjects, a note book to write down the subjects’ data completely and also a camera to take a picture of the interviewing process. After analyzing the data, the prediction of the causes of errors were not only because of the mother tongue influence or because of the employer’s influence in the past but also because of the reflection of general characteristics of rule learning such as incomplete application of rules, and failure to learn conditions under which rules applied as well.

Abstract

Kehidupan manusia sebagai makhluk bio-sosial dalam kehidupan yang aktif dinamis dalam bernegosiasi antar pribadi tak jarang muncul konflik, konflik antar pribadi ini disebabkan karena seseorang ingin menghalangi, menghambat, atau berseberangan dengan orang lain. Konflik dapat muncul dalam berbagai bentuk: konflik kepentingan, konflik atas harapan yang tak sama, konflik mengenai percapaian tujuan, secara khusus terdapat beberapa orang yang tergolong sebagai orang yang “conflict prone”. Secara umum, konflik tak dapat dihindari, namun perlu diselesaikan. Konflik dituduh sebagai penyebab pertengkaran, perpisahan, perceraian, penyakit jiwa, bahkan sampai tindak kekerasan. Untungnya sudah banyak orang menyadari bahwa kegagalan menangani konflik dengan cara yang konstruktif akan merusak hubungan yang telah harmonis. Namun, dilain pihak konflik akan memiliki manfaat bagi orang yang mengalaminya. Setiap orang dapat memilih cara yang dianggap terbaik untuk tetap menjaga hubungan antar pribadi. Ada tiga tipe kepribadian manusia: compliant, agresif dan menghindar, yang masing - masing memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda. Setiap orang mempunyai kebutuhan serta dapat memilih caranya tersendiri dalam memuaskan kebutuhannya (faktor belajar), sikap dan nilai yang dia kembangkan. Karakteristik pribadi sebagai sumber konflik memiliki beberapa dimensi: personal hubungan antar pribadi umum, dan hubungan formal. Karenanya seleksi atau promosi pegawai tak cukup dilakukan atas dasar kemampuan, kecerdasan, minat dan pengalaman kerja seseoran, tetapi perlu pula dikaji karakteristik pribadinya melalui pengamatan yang cermat mengenai cara dan sikap kerjanya sebagai anggota suatu lingkungan pekerja (apakah ada indikasi neurotic). Sebagai hasil belajar dalam hubungan antar pribadi akan menghasilkan strategi tertentu untuk menghadapi konflik yang melalui dua pertimbangan: Pertimbangan tujuan dan pertimbangan hubungan baik antar pribadi. Beberapa strategi yang perlu diambil dalam penyelesaian suatu konflik adalah: Menarik diri untuk menghindari konflik; Ingin diterima dan disukai orang lain; Berusaha mengalahkan lawan-lawannya dengan memaksakan kehendaknya; Memelihara hubungan baik dengan berlindung pada peraturan; dan Mementingkan tujuan dirinya dan juga orang lain
Verification of the Linear Momentum Conservation Law Using Linear Air Track Putu Chrisnaria Hasian Sinaga

Abstract

The progress of physics is based on facts and experimental data. Therefore, it is very important to prove or verify some theories experimentally. One of fundamental laws of physics is momentum conservation law. It has been used extensively in many mechanical problems involving collisions. However, the use of this law is usually taken for granted and rarely been demonstrated experimentally due to technical difficulties in determining the instantaneous velocities of the objects before and after the collision takes place. These difficulties can be solved by using Linear Air Track to prove the conservation law of momentum by colliding two vehicles on the track, because Linear Air Track can provide linear and stable motion with negligible friction force between vehicles and its track. By using photographic technique, the image can be quantified and analyzed to obtain the instantaneous velocities the object before and after collision. As a temporary hypothesis Linear Air Track can be use to verify the linear momentum conservation law on any collision between two objects. Due to considerably high degree of measurement uncertainties involved in the experiment, the hypothesis will be accepted if the comparative ration between the final and initial total momentum of the system is up or equal to 90%. The result from this experiment shows that the percentages of accuracy are up to 90%. Then, we may conclude that Linear Air Track can be used to verify the linear momentum conservation law on any collision between two objects.
