Abstract

Primary School in Indonesia is considered to be a basic formal education which has some specific objectives. It is believed that nationalism should be introduced in these ages to build a person with good nationalism character. Anxiety about young generation’s national character causes consideration of removing English subject from Primary school curriculum while today’s demand of English competency is very high. Many people worry about the influence of western culture that can omit students’ national character if it is taught from Primary School level. In fact, the importance of teaching English at early age is clearly needed to create qualified Indonesian human resources in the future. This article aims to propose idea which can give solution to maintain nationalism through teaching English at primary school by giving some alternative models of teaching method and suggested materials. Key words: Nationalism, Primary School, teaching English Sekolah Dasar di Indonesia adalah pendidikan dasar formal yang memiliki beberapa tujuan tertentu. Banyak pendapat meyakini bahwa nasionalisme seharusnya diperkenalkan pada masa masa ini untuk membentuk insan berkarakter nasional yang baik. Kekhawatiran terhadap karakter nasional generasi muda menjadi pertimbangan dihapusnya mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kurikulum Sekolah Dasar, disisi lain kebutuhan untuk memiliki kompetensi berbahasa Inggris sangatlah tinggi. Banyak orang khawatir terhadap pengaruh budaya barat yang dapat mengilangkan karakter nasional siswa jika Bahasa Inggris diajarkan mulai tingkat Sekolah Dasar. Kenyataanya, pentingnya pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sejak dini sangat diperlukan untuk menciptakan sumber daya manusia yang berkualitas di masa yang akan datang. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mencetuskan ide yang dapat menjadi solusi mempertahankan nilai nilai nasionalisme melalui pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Dasar dengan memberi beberapa contoh metode pembelajaranalternatif beserta materinya. Abstract

Dian Asa Utari Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo dian_asa_demos@yahoo.com   Abstract The arrival of digital technology has done much to change the way in which learning is displayed, shared, and analyzed in multimedia, as well as hypermedia environments. The adoption level of emerging web technologies is on the rise in academic settings. Students become more technologically literate and the trends of writing are shifting from paper-based texts to screen based texts. This paper first points out the teaching of writing in the digital age, with the integration of Information and Communication Technologies where Weblog is used as a promising tool. Toward this end, this paper further explains briefly about Weblog in writing course, its features and types, and technical matters concerning how to use weblog for writing instruction. The advantages of using Weblog are also described in this paper, carrying out the idea of utilizing Weblog in the writing subjects in the higher level of education.   Key words:  information and communication technologies, weblog, teaching of writing Abstract Kedatangan teknologi digital telah banyak mengubah cara pembelajaran dimana pembelajaran ditampilkan, dibagi, dan dianalisis dalam multimedia, demikian juga lingkungan hypermedia. Tingkat adopsi teknologi web meningkat di setting akademik. Siswa menjadi lebih melek teknologi dan tren penulisan beralih dari berbasis kertas naskah berbasis layar teks. Makalah ini pertama menunjukkan pengajaran menulis di era digital, dengan integrasi Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi di mana Weblog digunakan sebagai alat yang menjanjikan. Sampai disini, tulisan ini lebih lanjut menjelaskan secara singkat tentang Weblog dalam mata kuliah writing, fitur dan jenis-jenisnya, dan hal teknis mengenai bagaimana menggunakan weblog dalam pengajaran writing. Keuntungan menggunakan Weblog juga dijelaskan dalam makalah ini, melaksanakan ide memanfaatkan Weblog dalam mata kuliah writing di level universitas. Abstract

A linguistically informed teacher about views of language can either adopt structuralist or functionalist approach to successfully teach language in his/her classroom. The Communicative Language Teaching is aimed at attracting second language learners to purposeful classroom activities in which learners use and reproduce language as it is practiced in real communication beyond the classroom in meaningful situations. To achieve this, a linguistically well-informed language teacher needs to focus on his role as a facilitator, an interdependent member of the classroom, a needs analyst, a counsellor, and a group activity manager. In addition, the teacher needs to remember that in communicative classroom students negotiate (for meaning) between themselves in their own ways in the classroom communications. Therefore, a linguistically well-informed teacher needs to consider what classroom activities he needs to pick up to achieve the ultimate goal of the CLT, which is the communicative competence.

Abstract

Dian Novita Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo dheenov@yahoo.com Abstract Using morphemes in English teaching and learning process is essential to increase the mastery of students‟ vocabulary. In the case, morphemes are the powerful aspects to build words. The article is intended to propose the importance of morphemes as one of linguistic approaches to help the learners figure out the meaning of unknown words by combining morpheme clues and context clues. In addition, it is expected that English teachers can apply the method in their teaching and learning process. Here, the method is divided into three phases: the instructional phase, the practice phase, and reviews and assessments. Keywords: morphemes, English teaching and learning process, vocabulary Abstrak Menggunakan morfem dalam proses belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris sangat penting untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata peserta didik. Dalam kasus ini, morfem adalah aspek kuat untuk membangun kata-kata. Artikel ini dimaksudkan untuk menunjukkan pentingnya morfem sebagai salah satu pendekatan linguistik untuk membantu peserta didik mengetahui arti dari kata-kata yang tidak diketahui dengan cara menggabungkan petunjuk-petunjuk morfemik dengan petunjuk-petunjuk kontekstual. Selain itu, para pengajar bahasa Inggris diharapkan dapat menerapkan metode tersebut dalam proses belajar mengajar mereka. Abstract

This research is based on the fact that the syllabus for learning English at D-3 Midwifery Unipdu Jombang was not appropriate with the needs of the profession of a midwife. The results showed that the syllabus‟ content of English required by the graduate of D3 midwifery Unipdu is as follows: General expressions: 1) common phrases to start and end a conversation with a client. 2) The introductory phrases. 3) Therapeutic greetings. 4) Numbers. 5) Time expressions. 6) Phrases to praise. 7) Phrases to calm someone. Grammar: 1) Yes / No questions / Wh questions. 2) Imperative sentences. Diah Ayu Wulan 1 Sri Aju Indrowaty 2 Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Brawijaya (ayumirza9220@gmail.com) Membaca, menulis, menyimak, dan berbicara merupakan empat keterampilan bahasa yang harus dikuasai oleh pembelajar bahasa, demikian juga dengan mahasiswa yang mempelajari bahasa Mandarin dan bahasa Jepang. Penguasaan hanzi (huruf Mandarin) dan kanji (huruf Jepang) merupakan salah satu faktor penting untuk menunjang kelancaran mahasiswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Mandarin dan bahasa Jepang. Setiap hanzi dan kanji berfungsi menunjukkan lambang makna. Mempelajari huruf bukan hal yang mudah terutama bagi mahasiswa yang belum pernah mempelajari kedua bahasa tersebut. Karena itu diperlukan suatu cara untuk mempelajari huruf dengan mengunakan medan makna. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan subjek penelitian mahasiswa semester 3 Prodi S1 Sastra Cina dan Prodi S1 Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk pembelajaran huruf berdasarkan medan makna dan untuk mengetahui keefektifan pembelajaran huruf berdasarkan medan makna di kedua prodi tersebut. Abstract

Teaching speaking is considered as the “interesting and challenging activity”. Indeed, it needs various ways in order to make students “active in speaking” during the class. This article would like to present the three phases, namely a PPP (Presentation, Practice, and Production) method in “teaching speaking to university students”. The fundamental principles of using this method is that the “students are smart and creative”. Eventhough, they are considered as “intelligent and creative”, teachers still need to guide or control them to anticipate any errors made by the students. Furthermore, it is important for teachers to know when to give “instant correction” in class. When the class is focused on accuracy, teachers can give an “instant correction”. On the other hand, when it is focused on “fluency”, it is not suggested that teachers give “instant correction” and this may interfere with the goals of activity. Keywords: Presentation, Practice, Production, accuracy, fluency Abstrak Mengajar kelas speaking bisa dianggap sebagai aktivitas yang menarik dan menantang. Berbagai cara benar-benar perlu dilakukan untuk membuat para siswa aktif dalam berbicara selama pelajaran. Artikel ini membahas tentang tiga tahapan, yaitu sebuah metode PPP (Presentation, Practice, and Production) yang diterapkan dalam “mengajar speaking” pada mahasiswa. Landasan dalam menggunakan metode ini adalah bahwa mahasiswa pandai dan kreatif. Meskipun, demikian pengajar masih perlu “membimbing atau mengontrol” mereka untuk mengantisipasi adanya kesalahan. Di samping itu, pengajar harus tahu kapan waktu yang tepat untuk memberikan “koreksi langsung” di kelas. Ketika kelas sedang difokuskan pada “ketepatan”, pengajar bisa memberikan “koreksi langsung”. Sebaliknya, ketika kelas sedang difokuskan pada “kepasihan/ kelancaran”, sebaiknya pengajar tidak memberikan “koreksi langsung” dan hal ini bisa mengganggu tujuan aktifitas kelas. Achmad Fanani Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum Jombang akufanani@gmail.com  Abstract The EPT test is an internationally accepted standard of English that measures the academic English proficiency of a non-native speaker of English. This research is aimed at designing EPT training syllabuses that meet the needs of non-English department students of UNIPDU Jombang with low level of English proficiency. In general, the contents of the syllabuses based on the students’ needs analysis are as follows: 1. Listening comprehension: PART A:  meaning questions, suggestion, prediction, implication, inferences, PART B: topics of conversations, details of conversations, PART C: topics of talks/lectures, details of talks/lectures; 2. Structure and Written Expression: a. Incomplete sentences: conjunctions, comparisons, subject missing, adjective clauses, b. Underlined words: count/non-count nouns, banana rule, adjectives, prepositions, noun-pronoun agreement, singular/plural nouns; 3. Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary: References, passage organization, exception, inferences, topics, main ideas. Keywords: EPT, students’ needs, syllabuses   Abstrak EPT test adalah tes Bahasa Inggris berstandard internasional yang mengukur kemampuan bahasa Inggris akademik para petutur bahasa Inggris non-native. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mendesain silabus untuk pelatihan EPT yang memenuhi kebutuhan mahasiswa dari jurusan non bahasa Inggris UNIPDU Jombang yang berkemampuan bahasa Inggris kurang.
