Abstract

Language play is now in common practice among various levels of society, ranging from the men in the street up to well-educated individuals, and from jobless persons up to professionals. It even gets more popular in line with the development of information and communication technology. Language play occurs when people manipulate the forms and functions of language. Formally, language play makes use of numbers and letters to reveal certain meanings different from those in their conventional application. Functionally, language is manipulated in such a way that it may attract readers’ attention and amuse them as well. This article is an attempt at characterizing the phenomenon of language play and examines the ways in which the language is manipulated to create a new style of language usage. The discussion on language play here is graphological and phonological in nature. In other words, it discusses language play in terms of its writings and sounds. The corpus of the discussion are words, phrases, and sentences in English, Indonesian, Javanese, and Batak. They are taken from playful personalized car licence-plates, advertisements, graffiti, books, televisions, public places, etcetera. The findings suggest that language play can help people to communicate their ideas through some unique forms of language. Besides, it may also be a source of fun both for themselves and for others.

Abstract

Madiun is one of industrial towns producing local specific snack called brem. Up to now, the home industries which produce brem still use wood as the main fuel. Constant use of wood as fuel may cause a great exploitation on trees and forests that serious environmental damages result. In order to prevent the bad impact on environment, the industries are obliged to make use of alternative energy in their production activities. The implementation of this strategy requires both internal and external supports of various groups of society. This study aimed to determine the degree of trust / expectation evaluation, normative belief, and motivation of those home industries in their support toward the implementation of briquette charcoal as an alternative energy. The analysis was carried out using the method of different scale and factor analysis. The result showed that (1) the degree of trust/expectation, evaluation, normative belief, and motivation of the home industries in their support toward the implementation of briquette charcoal as an alternative energy was relatively high, but still variant between the degree of belief and that of evaluation (2) the factors that supported the attitudes of those home industries in the implementation of briquette charcoal as an alternative energy were the importance of energy for the home industries, the possible usage of alternative energy, energy saving acts, and friends, family as well as others (workers)

Abstract

The objective of the research is to define clearly the influence of worklike factors on work  productivity of freelance workers of AJB Bumiputera 1912 Madiun. This study is a survey research. The data were collected by the use of questionnaire and interview. The number of population was 100 freelance workers. The sample was taken by using total sampling technique, so all of the population served as the sample as well. The findings of this research showed that all variables – communication,  participation, work satisfaction, and leadership influence simultaneously the work productivity. It was proved by F-test which indicated that 0,524 were explainable and 0,524 or 52,40 % of work productivity was influenced by all the variables – motivation, communication, participation, work satisfaction, and leadership. On the other hand, the rest, 0,476 or 47,60 %, was influenced by other factors included within the model. Based on these findings, it can be stated that the variables of communication, participation, work satisfaction, and leadership influenced work productivity in not more than 52,40 %, and some other factors influenced it too. Partial test proved that motivation and communication were significant factors of work productivity. It is showed by the result of t-test which set motivation influenced in 3,068 and communication influenced in 2,175, while it was under 1,661 of critical number. It clearly means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It is reasonable that giving motivation is the greatest influence as financial reasons. It is related to the way of the leader in setting harmony factors included within the working atmosphere among the workers. When it is set well, the workers helped one another, and the company’s target was achieved, and, of course, their working existence was supported. Therefore, increasing work productivity meets the increasing costumer quantities.

Abstract

The effectiveness of problem solving through counseling can really be detected since the counselee begins to have a problem, namely when the counselee realizes that he has a problem. Counseling with people who are not aware of the problem is actually not effective. Counselee’s motivation to come to a counselor on the basis of awareness that he has a problem and is in need of someone else becomes a requirement of a successful guiding. In addition to the counselee’s motivation, another factor that influences the success of counseling  is  the  counselor’s  emphaty.  A  counselor’s  ability  to  show  emphaty   is   very important and indispensable to the success of counseling. The formulation of the problem of this study is as follows: 1. Is there a significant effect of counselee’s motivation on the success of    counseling process? 2. Is there a significant effect of counselor’s empathy on the success of    counseling process? 3. Is there a significant effect of counselee’s motivation and counselor’s empathy on the success of counseling process? The results of the correlation coefficient analysis showed that there was a great correlation between counselee’s motivation and counselor’s empathy and the success of counseling process as indicated by the correlation value 0.41-0.70 The analysis of determination coefficient showed that the success of counseling process was influenced by counselee’s motivation and counselor’s empathy by 23%. The result of t test showed that the first hypothesis, which reads "counselee’s motivation significantly influences the success of counseling process" was accepted and the second hypothesis, which reads" counselor’s emphaty significantly influences the success of counseling process" was accepted. The results of F test showed that the major hypothesis that reads "motivation counselee’s and counselor’s emphaty significantly influence the success of counseling process" was accepted.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of capital expenditure on maintenance expenditure in the same year, and in different years, by looking at changes of capital expenditure and maintenance expenditure. This research is a case study that examined the causal relationship between variables. The data used were panel data. They were the secondary data taken from budget realization reports of municipality and regency governments in the Province of East Java in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Hypothesis testing made use of a simple regression analysis. The analysis showed that significant capital expenditure significantly influenced maintenance expenditure in the same test. Capital expenditure, however, had no significant effect on maintenance expenditure with the data testing in different years. The increase in capital expenditure significantly influenced the increase in maintenance expenditure.

Abstract

One way to overcome the problems of banana skin waste is to use it as raw material for the manufacture of nata through fermentation by the bacteria Acetobacter xylinum. The purpose of this experiment is to study the effect of the use of some waste of various banana skins on the physicochemical properties of nata produced. The design of experiments was conducted using Completely Randomized Design divided into four treatments, namely KP1  use of kepok kuning banana skin, KP2 use of raja banana skin, KP3 use ambon banana skin and KP4 use of kluthuk banana skin. Each treatment was conducted with three replications. Medium starter and fermentation made use of medium Hassids and Barker which had been modified with N sources of ZA, and vinegar table. Testing the physicochemical properties of nata produced was done through the measurements of the thickness, weight, yield, texture, and water content. The results showed that differences in the types of banana skin waste had an effect on the physicochemical properties of nata produced. The use of ambon banana skin produced the best results on the physicochemical properties of nata.

Abstract

Value of firms may affect blockholder ownership, when a blockholder wants to retain a large shareholding on the basis of alignment of incentives. This study examines the influence of firm value measured with a simple Tobin's Q to the blockholder ownership (measured from the fraction of shares controlled by large shareholders) of the 53 companies in Indonesia in the period 2005-2008. By using regression, the study found that there was the influence of firm value toward blockholder ownership in Indonesia. It is consistent with the results of the research conducted by Myers and Majluf, 1984; La Porta et al., 2000 stating that firm value has a positive effect on blockholder ownership.

Abstract

This study specifically aimed 1) to determine the relationship between family social support and adjustment to the conflict of dual role of working married women and 2) to determine the differences in the dual role conflict of married women who worked on the level of education. The population of the research was 150 working married women as teachers at St. Bonaventura High School of Madiun and lecturers of Widya Mandala Catholic University of Madiun. The sample was 38 in number consisting of 15 teachers and 23 lecturers. The data were collected through three scales, namely the scale of the dual role conflict of married women who worked, family social support, and adjustment. The data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression technique and Independent Sample T-test. The result of the analysis on the first hypothesis showed that there was a negative relationship between family social support and adjustment to the dual role conflict of working married women. It was accepted with a value R = -0.370, R Square = 0.137 or 13.7%, the value of F = 2.781, odds error P = 0.002 (<0.05). T test on each of the independent variables was constant. Family social support variable t count was -0791 with a significance level of 0.000 (<0.05). While, the adjustment variable t count was -0235 with a significance level of 0.005 (<0.05). The result of the analysis on the second hypothesis indicated that there were differences in the dual role conflict of working married women based on their level of education. It was accepted with F value of 4.073, t value of 1.523 with a significance level of 0.000 (≤ 0.05). The mean value of S1 education level was 102,96 and the mean education level of the S2 was 109.40. The higher the education level was the higher the conflict of dual role of working married women would be.
