Abstract

The ETT cuff is used to prevent air leak and aspiration. A high compliance ETT cuff in adult usually to prevent air leakage. ETT cuff should be inflated in the therapeutic range, because as it may results underinflation and overinflation that will influence the hemodynamic such as heart rate and blood pressure. This study is to assess the effect of inflating ETT cuff using syringes and cuff inflator on the pulse rate and blood pressure changes. This quasi-experiment study applied cross over design to 21 intubated patients. The control group using syringe inflating ETT cuff, while the intervention group using a cuff-inflator. Pulse rate and blood pressure changes at the first intervention and after 4-5 hours were observed. Collected data were analyzed using paired t- test. The results show that inflating of ETT cuff using a syringe and cuff inflator had no significant on both measurements series to pulse rate (p=0.189), sistolic blood pressure (p=0.353), and diastolic (p=0.180). Wheter cuff spuit or cuff inflator do not affect pulse rate and blood pressure. ETT cuff inflation should be considered to maintain ideal pressure and to minimize complication due to underinflation and overinflation.

Abstract

National nurse competency examination (UKNI) aims to measure standards of nurses approved with Nurse’s Register License. This examination could induce anxieties that affect students’ readiness, performance and graduation. The objective of this study was to describe coping strategy in dealing with national nurse competency examination and its related factors which are anxiety and perception. A descriptive study was performed on 80 nursing students at clinical rotation nursing program who enrolled in March 2017’s nurse competency examination. German Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI-G), Perception Questionnaire and Coping Strategy Indicators (CSI) were used to measure exam anxiety, student’s perception and coping strategy respectively. The results show that regarding to students’ perception, 37 students (46,3%) demonstrated good perception and the rest (58,7%) showed poor perception. Forty two students (52.5%) experienced low anxiety and the rest (47.5%) experienced high anxiety. In regards to coping strategy in dealing with competence examination, 44 students were in good category (55%), while 36 students (45%) were in poor category. This study implies that information about the national nurse competence examination should be provided as earlier as possible, so that students could make adequate preparation.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Nurses play an important role to apply practice in cultural competence in hospitals. To perform this role nurses need to provide information on the conceptual aspects of cultural competence by using instruments and assessing cultural competence in a clinical setting. Objectives of the study: 1) to develop the cultural competency for clinical pediatric nurse (CCS-CPN), and 2) to psychometric evaluate the validity and reliability of CCS-CPN. Methods: An inductive method was used to develop an instrument to measure nurse perceptions of CCS-CPN. The scale validation was conducted with a purposive sampling of 450 general hospital nurses recruited from twenty general hospitals in Indonesia. DeVellis’ eight-step plan was used to establish guidelines for development the CCS-CPN. The data was examined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is a method to identify the internal dimensions of the CCS-CPN. Results: Using an EFA, 30-items with a six-factor structure were retained to form the CCS-CPN. These factors describe: culture awareness of pediatric nurse; culture knowledge of pediatric nurse; culture skill of pediatric nurse; culture encounter of pediatric nurse; culture desire of pediatric nurse; and culture sensitivity of pediatric nurse. The 30-item CCS-CPN yielded an overall Cronbach’s alpha-coefficients .85. The Cronbach’s alpha-coefficients for the CCS-CPN subscales were .81, .73, .81, .75, .78 and .87, respectively. Conclusion: The 30-item CCS-CPN version of Indonesia consists of six-factors were acceptable and significant. Unfortunelly, factor 4 obtained an item that does not represent the dimensions of the culture encounter of pediatric nurses. Therefore, further research is needed by using different method of Delphi method.

Abstract

Background. Prediabetes is a condition when blood glucose levels are above normal but do not yet meet the criteria for diabetes mellitus. Many people have already been diagnosed with prediabetes. However, there is little data that shows the prevalence and characteristics of people with prediabetes.Objective. To identify the prevalence and demographic characteristics of adults with prediabetes in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia.Method. A cross-sectional study conducted in 21 Puskesmas (public health centers) in Semarang which were randomly selected from a total of 37 Puskemas. Out of 123 respondents participating in this study, 105 respondents met the inclusion criteria of the study. Oral Glucose Test Tolerance (OGTT) was done after peripherally screening for random glucose levels. Univariate analysis was performed to calculate the frequency and percentage of each variable.Results. The result shows that the prevalence of adult respondents with prediabetes in this study accounted for 17.14%. This study also found that the respondents’ mean age was 38.57 ± 14.84. The majority of the respondents were women (66.7%). They have normal BMI, yet higher waist circumference (23.82 ± 4.48; 83.13 ± 11.34), respectively.Conclusion. Prediabetes is prevalent among adults in Semarang. Thus, to control the incidence of uncontrolled DM, screening needs to be done to identify individuals with prediabetes in order to prevent it from developing into DM. In addition, the application of healthy lifestyle interventions among adults at risk of diabetes also needs to be improved.
