Abstract

Most often medical images such as X-Rays have a low dynamic range and many of their targeted features are difficult to identify. Intensity transformations that improve image quality usually rely onwavelet denoising and enhancement typically use the technique of thresholding to obtain better quality medical images. A disadvantage of wavelet thresholding is that even though it adequately removes noise in an image, it introduces unwanted artifacts into the image near discontinuities. We utilize a total variation method and an undecimated wavelet image enhancing algorithm for improving the image quality of chest radiographs. Our approach achieves a high level chest radiograph image deniosing in lung nodules detection while preserving the important features. Moreover, our method results in a high image sensitivity that reduces the average number of false positives on a test set of medical data.

Abstract

Machine vision is very important for ensuring the success of intelligent transportation systems, particularly in the area of road maintenance. For this reason, many studies had been focusing on automatic image-based crack detection as a replacement for manual inspection that had depended on the specialist’s knowledge and expertise. In the image processing technique, the pre-processing and edge detection stages are important for filtering out noises and in enhancing the quality of the edges in the image. Since threshold is one of the powerful methods used in the edge detection of an image, we have therefore proposed a modified Otsu-Canny Edge Detection Algorithm in the selection of the two threshold values as well as implemented a multi-resolution level fixed partitioning method in the analysis of the global and local threshold values of the image. This is then followed by a statistical measure in selecting the edge image with the best global threshold. This study had utilized the road crack image dataset that were obtained from Crackforest. The results had revealed the proposed method to not only perform better than the conventional Canny edge detection method but had also shown the maximum value derived from the local threshold of 5x5 partitioned image outperforming the other partitioned scales.

Abstract

Vehicles technology have been a priority area of research over the last few decades. With the increasing the use of electronic components in the automotive industry to measure conditions around the vehicle, the focus of automotive technology development is now leading to the development of active technology. Information on the speed of conventional vehicles is generally still obtained based on the rotation of the wheel, but there are weakness in the system that is the diference between wheel and road through vehicle also changes wheel radius of the vehicle due to wind tube air preasure that can change at any time. In this research used Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) 6 axis (accelerometer and gyroscope) which have been done filtering by using Kalman filter in order to make output sensor value more stable, results obtained at the test of 0 m/s had an RMS error of 0.8696 m/s when elevation is +450; 0.0393 m/s when elevation is 00; and 0.3030 m/s when elevation is -450. this research is expected to be an exploration for the development of a decent system that is suitable to be used as vehicle speed estimator which is as reliable as it is by using an existing speedometer on a ground vehicle generally regardless of slippage and changes in wind capacity on wheels.

Abstract

This paper presents the characterization of excitation source LEDs and sensors without filters for measuring fluorescence in fluorescein and green leaf extract. For this purpose, eight light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used with the following characteristics: one blue, one green, one red, one infrared, and four violets. The first four LEDs were used as sensors without filters to detect fluorescence induced by the other four violet LEDs in 11 samples of different fluorescein concentrations and in 14 samples of different dilutions of green leaf extract. The results show that infrared LEDs can detect the red emission of green leaf extract and red and infrared LEDs detect the fluorescence of fluorescein in concentrations of up to 1.8 μM. The developed system allows and facilitates teaching optical spectroscopy in basic education without incurring high costs.

Abstract

Soil spectroscopy measurement is widely used to determine the macronutrients content in the soil. Spectrometer is costly equipment and commonly used to determine the transmittance, absorbance or reflectance level of various liquids and opaque solids by measuring the intensity of light as a light source passes through a sample chemical substance. This paper is reported on a low cost experimental assessment of soil macronutrient for soil spectroscopy utilizing Raspberry Pi (RPI) module in visible and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength. The sensitivity measurements are mainly due to the concentration level and the intensity of light emitting diode (LED) light source. The work is focusing on the absorbance spectroscopy particularly on linear relationship to determine the Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) content level in soil using colour-developing reagent. The development of low cost and portable RPI based spectrophotometer has created new possibilities to measure the concentration level of the existed soil macronutrient within visible and infrared light wavelength of light sources. The absorbance of light was computed based on Beer-Lambert Law. The low cost RPI based spectrometer costs 80% less than the spectrometer available in the market and is capable of recording the absorbance measurements up to 5 samples. The performance of this prototype shows that it is possible to build the spectrometer using open-source software and hardware by considering the limiting factors such as light transfer to the sample, spectral filtering and the sensitivity due to the signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract

A major part of the success of human-robots integration requires the development of robotic platforms capable of interacting in human environments. Human beings have an environment designed for their physical and morphological capacity, robots must adapt to these conditions. This paper presents a fuzzy-sliding hybrid grasp control for a five-finger robotic hand. As a design principle, the scheme takes into account the minimum force required on the object to prevent the object from slipping. The robotic hand uses force sensors on each finger to determine the grasp state. The control is designed with two control surfaces, one when there is slippage, the other when there is no slippage. For each surface, control rules are defined and unified by means of a fuzzy inference block. The proposed scheme is evaluated in the laboratory for different objects, which include spherical and cylindrical elements. In all cases, an excellent grasp was observed without producing deformations in the fragile objects.

Abstract

An enhanced sensor based on symmetrical split ring resonator (SSRR) functioning at microwave frequencies has been proposed in order to detect and characterize the metal crack of the materials. This sensor is based on perturbation theory, in which the dielectric properties of the material affect the quality factor and resonance frequency of the microwave resonator. Conventionally, coaxial cavity, waveguide, dielectric resonator techniques have been used for characterizing materials. However, these techniques are often large, and expensive to build, which restricts their use in many important applications. Thus, the enhanced bio-sensing technique presents advantages such as high measurement sensitivity with the capability of suppressing undesired harmonic spurious and permits potentially metal crack material detection. Hence, using a High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software, the enhanced sensor is modeled and the reflection S11 is performed for testing the aluminum metal with crack and without crack at the frequency range of 100 MHz to 3GHz. Variation of crack width and depth has been investigated and the most obvious finding emerged from this study is that the ability of detecting a minimum of sub-millimeter crack width and depth which is a round 10 ????m width or depth where the minimum shift of reflected frequency is recorded at 6.2 MHz and 3 MHz for crack width and depth respectively. The enhanced SSRR provides high capability of detecting small crack defection by utilizing the interaction between coupled gap resonators and it is useful for various applications such as aircraft fuselages, nuclear power plant steam generator tubing, and steel bridges and for others that can be compromised by metal fatigue.

Abstract

Wideband-multiband reconfigurable elliptical monopole antenna is investigated in this paper. By having conventional elliptical monopole antenna, wideband operating frequency is obtained. With the combination of dual pairs of slotted arms and a band-pass filter on the ground plane of the elliptical monopole, multiband is achieved. Dual-band operating frequencies at 1.6 GHz and 2.6 GHz while wideband operates from 3.35 GHz to 9 GHz. Therefore, wide range of wireless communication systems is obtained from the proposed antenna to support the multiband mode (i.e. GPS and LTE) and UWB systems. Frequency reconfigurable is achieved by controlling the switches integrated on the antenna structure. Simulated results of reflection coefficient, radiation patterns and gain performance are presented. The proposed antenna design is suitable candidate for different wireless communication applications.

Abstract

In this letter, we propose a novel power splitting protocol for energy harvesting half-duplex AF relaying communication systems. In our proposed system, the relay harvests energy from the source transmissions, by employing adaptive PS protocol, for powering the retransmissions to the destination. The proposed model system is investigated in cases maximize and non-maximize ergodic capacity. Firstly, we perform the analytical mathematical analysis for deriving the integral closed-form expression of the outage probability and the ergodic capacity. Then, the analytical analysis of the system performance can be convinced by Monte-Carlo simulation with helping Mat Lab software. Finally, the numerical analysis provides practical insights into the effect of various system parameters on the system performance of the proposed system. This paper can be considered as a recommendation for the energy harvesting communication network.

Abstract

In designing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), such as quadrotor, sometimes an engineer should consider the required cost that is relatively expensive. As we know, quadrotor is one of robots that very usefull and has several advantages for human needs such as disaster area monitoring, air quality monitoring, area mapping, aerial photography, and surveillance. Thus, designing a rapid quadrotor with low-cost components and simple control system needs to be considered here. This paper presents design and implementation of a quadrotor using relatively low-cost components with Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control system as its controller. The components used consist of microcontroller, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor, Electronic Speed Control (ESC), remote control unit, battery, and frame. These components can be easily found in the electronic markets, especially in Indonesia. As an addition, this paper also describes PID control system as flight controller. A simple economic analysis is presented to clarify the cost in designing this quadrotor. Based on experimental testing result, the quadrotor able to fly stably with PID controller although there still overshoot at the attitude responses.
