Abstract

Dependence on intuitive and experiences would add more complexity in the design process. Novice designers would follow the design of any existing systems without direction. This paper proposed a systematic design approach that provides guidance for novice designers in achieving the targeted usability goal using patterns, and evaluating the prototypes in achieving the determined usability goals. The proposed approach involved the cooperation of experts in providing direction to the novice designers in achieving usability goal in the system design. A collective decision both from users and experts would be gather to give a clear decision of a chosen prototype. Two experiments that followed the proposed approach were conducted with 7 groups or 33 undergraduate students. Ten industry experts, 10 field experts and 29 prospective users were involved in evaluating the appropriate use of the tool to assist them in making decision during comparative prototype evaluation. The result from both experiments concluded the systematic approach could help the novice designers to emphasize usability along the design process. It was observed that the achievement of important goals in their designed prototype could be easily done if pattern selection was provided to the novice designers. The designed tool to assist novice designers has high reliability and high acceptance level of appropriate of use in making decision for the preferred prototype.

Abstract

Research affirms that electronic learning (e-learning) has a great deal of advantages to learning process, it’s provides learners with flexibility in terms of time, place, and pace. That easiness was not be a guarantee of a good learning outcomes though they got the same learning material and course, because the fact is the outcomes was not the same from one to another and even not satisfy enough. One of prerequisite to the successful of e-learning process is the presence of learning motivation and it was not easy to identify. We propose a novel model to predicting the presence of learning motivation in e-learning using those attributes that have been identified in previous research. This model has been built using WEKA toolkit by comparing fourteen algorithms for Tree Classifier and ten-fold cross validation testing methods to process 3.200 of data sets. The best accuracy reached at 91.1% and identified four parameters to predict the presence of learning motivation in e-learning, and aim to assist teachers in identify whether student needs motivation or does not. This study also confirmed that Tree Classifier still has the best accuracy to predict and classify academic performance, it was reached average 90.48% for fourteen algorithm for accuracy value.

Abstract

The utilization of coconut charcoal as alternative media of grounding was investigated. The mesh-electrode was made of stainless steel of 8-mm diameter, whereas its lattice dimension was 50cmx50cm. Four variations of lattice number were considered, i.e. 1-, 2-, and 4-lattice structures. Dry and wet charcoal media were considered. Mesh location was fixed in the depth of 80cm under the ground, while the 10cm of medium thickness variation was chosen. The resistance obtained using 10-cm thickness of charcoal layer in a mesh consisting of 1-, 2-, and 4-lattices were 268, 131, and 78 ohms consecutively. The addition of layer up to 80-cm resulted in a resistance decrease of 48%, 33%, and 44%. Using wet charcoal, the 10-cm layer produced 26.5, 17.5, and 14.8 ohms of grounding resistance and a reduction of 25%, 10%, and 3.6% subsequently for 1-, 2-, and 4-lattice mesh structure if the layer thickness was 80 cm.

Abstract

A dual-band harmonic suppression dipole antenna suitable for energy harvesting system is presented in this paper. A linear dipole with two parasitic elements is designed and fabricated with a capability to eliminate the harmonic of higher order modes. At first, the antenna resonates at 900 MHz and 2.7 GHz. Therefore, a parasitic element is added into each of the dipole’s arm to tune the second frequency band to 2.4 GHz to fit into wireless application. However, the presence of two parasitic elements has generated an unwanted harmonic at 4.0 GHz. Thus, a stub has been integrated into the antenna’s terminal (feed line) to suppress the 4.0 GHz frequency. This technique is suitable for developing a multiband antenna with harmonic suppression. The antenna is fabricated on a FR-4 board with the size of 72×152 mm2 which operates efficiently at 0.8 GHz and 2.4 GHz which is suitable for wireless communication applications. The prototype can suppress the undesired harmful harmonics present within the frequency range of 3 to 5 GHz. The antenna has a good potential to be used in a rectenna system with a dual-band frequency operation but with better performance. Simulation and measurement results obtained are in a good agreement, which have confirmed the proposed design concept.

Abstract

One of the concerning issues regarding smart city is Smart Parking. In Smart Parking, some researchers try to provide solutions and breakthroughs on several research topics among security systems, the availability of single space, an IoT framework, etc. In this study, we proposed a security system on Smart Parking based on face recognition and VLP’s (Vehicle License Plates) identification. In this research, SSIM (Structural Similarity) method as part of IQA has been applied due to its reliability and simple computation for face detection and recognition process. From the test results of 30 data, obtained the highest SSIM value 0.83 with the highest accuracy rate of 76.67%. That level of accuracy still has not reached the implementation standard of 99.9%. So that it still needs to be improved in the future studies, especially in the filtering noise section.

Abstract

This paper presents a new halftoning-based block truncation coding (HBTC) image reconstruction using sparse representation framework. The HBTC is a simple yet powerful image compression technique, which can effectively remove the typical blocking effect and false contour. Two types of HBTC methods are discussed in this paper, i.e., ordered dither block truncation coding (ODBTC) and error diffusion block truncation coding (EDBTC). The proposed sparsity-based method suppresses the impulsive noise on ODBTC and EDBTC decoded image with a coupled dictionary containing the HBTC image component and the clean image component dictionaries. Herein, a sparse coefficient is estimated from the HBTC decoded image by means of the HBTC image dictionary. The reconstructed image is subsequently built and aligned from the clean, i.e. non-compressed image dictionary and predicted sparse coefficient. To further reduce the blocking effect, the image patch is firstly identified as “border” and “non-border” type before applying the sparse representation framework. Adding the Laplacian prior knowledge on HBTC decoded image, it yields better reconstructed image quality. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HBTC image reconstruction. The proposed method also outperforms the former schemes in terms of reconstructed image quality.

Abstract

The research studies the effects of some weather parameters for Baghdad city on the output of the solar module of the type monocrystalline. The experimental part measures the electrical parameters of the photo-voltaic (PV) module for three levels of radiation rate 500, 750, and 1000 W/m2. The theoretical part includes the modeled and simulation of the PV panel, via the proposed mathematical single–diode model (SDM, 5 parameters), and Matlab-simulation. The Newton Raphson method was applied to find the output current of the solar panel and the plotting P-V, I-V curves.  The work involves preparing a simple mathematical model to estimate the optimal ambient conditions to give the highest output of the solar module. The validation of the model was verified by the practical testing of the cell for 6 months. The best results were obtained at standard testing conditions (25℃, 1000 W/m2). The output power calculated by the mathematical model was 30.1 W while from experimental work was 30.45 W. The relative error is 1.15%. The converge between experimental and modeling results for the same conditions is about 98.9% that proves the validity of the proposed model and the possibility of using it for all types of photovoltaic.

Abstract

Demands for high throughput bandwidth, encourage Point to Point wireless to serve more bandwidth for many kind application such as real-time multimedia services. We conduct research with testbed experimental at Point to Point topology use wireless 802.11n in LAB environment. The aim is to studying the performance that would be achieved by Interface Bonding and Channel Bonding techniques. We proposed experiment process and design to evaluate the performance of those techniques. Several parameters such as delay, jitter, data loss rate and throughput applied on TCP/UDP protocols with different Packet Sizes and Directional Traffic Flows. The results experiment showed that Channel Bonding has significant throughput improvement. However, the Interface Bonding results are far from expectation, we found that the performance is least than single normal link. As our finding we analyze it caused by Media Independent Interface (MII), and Scheduling Algorithm unable to work properly at wireless 802.11n using Point to Point connection.
