Abstract

The study explored the rhetorical strategies employed by Richard Mann in writing a political textbook entitled ‘Plots and Schemes that Brought down Soeharto’ in order to reveal the struggle of ideology of both the hegemonic reforms (the reformists’ side) and the hegemonic maintenance (Soeharto’s regime). Employing Appraisal Theory (White 1998; Martin & Rose 2003), Genre Theory (Chandler, 1997), and Text Framing (MacLachan, G. and Reid, I. 1994), the textbook was analysed  in terms of micro-, super-and macro-structures. On the level of microstructure, the readers were positioned as pro-reformists and against Soeharto’s regime. The superstructure analysis indicated that the textbook was written following the tradition of plots: orientation ^ mounting incidents ^ climax ^ denouement. The climax part was when Soeharto stated his resignation from presidency, followed by the denouement (the Habibie’s regime). Macrostructurally, the textbook was written in academic perspective of journalistic style employing the rhetorical strategies (Strayer 2004), such as downplayers, weaslers, dysphemism, euphemism, innuendo, loaded questions and horse-laughs. Since the study was pedagogically motivated, several issues, such as the development of literacy, the development of linguistic analyses (from non-critical to critical) were discussed at philosophical level to justify that the current study was critical discourse analysis.   Key Words: Critical Discourse Analysis, Rhetorical Strategies, Hegemonic Reform, Hegemonic Maintenance, APPRAISAL, Microstructure, GENRE (superstructure), Macrostructure.

Abstract

(English) language teaching has so far shifted to a more discourse-oriented paradigm,  resulting in genre-based approaches to the teaching of the four language skills with the development of competency-based curriculum. This paper highlights how literacy should be incorporated in the language classroom in such a way that the primary aim of language teaching is to make the students literate in the socio-cultural settings of the target language. Discussed prior to the curriculum design and program planning is  the theoretical principles which deal with (1) the model of language, (2) relationship between spoken and written language, (3) the term ‘literacy’ and (4) implication of the model of language. Meanwhile, in the curriculum design and program planning  this paper addresses  three major issues, such as (1) the point of departure for program planning, (2) the teaching-learning cycle, and (3) the teaching-learning cycle and classroom planning.

However the development of genre literacy has recently provided an attempt to create a new pedagogical space in the writing classroom. It is, therefore, this article elaborates how one should develop a genre-based model for teaching how to write a discussion by employing its social function, generic structure, lexicogrammatical features, and the teaching cycles.   Key words: genre-based, social function, generic structure, lexicogrammatical features, and teaching cycles.

Abstract

KEY WORDS: Hortatory Exposition, genre, monologue, communicative purpose, schematic structure, linguistic feature, lexicogrammar.

Abstract

Human language is rule-governed. But not all languages have the same exact rules. Sometimes the particular grammar in one language has to be governed but others do not have to.   Each of them has own characteristic even tough the phrase order among them is similar.   In general, the English and Indonesian phrase order is SVO or SPO (subject, Predicate, Object). But in noun clause English and Indonesian phrase order have different grammar.   Making equal sentences in Indonesian and English doesn’t always produce the same construction. It is related to the significance of each part to support the construction of clauses. And it can be used to describe the characteristic of each construction.  In noun clause the presence of particle in Indonesian phrase order makes the pattern of the phrase order change into P-S. And English phrase order is  so tight  that  the presence of particles in its grammar is unnecessary.   Key Words:  Phrase Order, Noun Clause, Particle
