Abstract

This article discusses how a speaker should recognize refusals of requests in English. The choices of whether or not uttering refusals or the selection of expressions to be used in uttering the refusals could disrupt or maintain the interaction with language in progress. Therefore, a discussion on related theories needs to be presented in this article in the effort as to provide insights of significant aspects in uttering refusals of requests. It is a descriptive discussion that it only presents arguments on speech acts of refusals by reviewing its related theories. Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) may gain much attention in the discussion since it is the central focus of the discussion. Conversational Principles and Face Threatening Acts of Politeness Theory are also touched because they also help the speaker to think of how to utter refusals of requests. Thought Patterns, on another side, culturally and pragmatically color the manner a speaker should utter refusals of requests in a given cultural context. Finally, the discussion also presents the degree of sensitiveness to social status, social distance and gender between the interlocutors in expressing refusals since those factors influence the choices of expressions of refusals.Key words: Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) , Conversational Principles, FTA in Politeness Theory, Thought Patterns.

Abstract

A language user employs a particular thought pattern to express ideas.  The author, using his or her language, knowledge, thought, experience and world-view, expresses his ideas or intention in the written text. On the other hand, the reader, using his or her knowledge, language, thought, and  his or her view of the world, attempts to reconstruct  or interpret what the author  has expressed  in the written text. Because of the obvious difference between the writer’s world view and the reader’s world view, perfect comprehension can never be achieved.  So, communication problems sometimes arise, particularly when they (the reader and the writer) come from different cultural backgrounds. The purpose of  this study is  investigating the thought patterns that underlie the writing of The Jakarta Post’s English specific features performed by ‘matured’ Indonesians. The research design of the study is as follows: 1) selecting English specific features written by Indonesians, 2) observing the profiles of every text by identifying the title, the thesis statement, the topic sentences, the relation of ideas between paragraphs (thesis statement and topic sentences) and within paragraph (between the topic sentence and supporting sentences), pattern of development. The research results show  that the thought pattern underlying the English specific features written by Indonesians in The Jakarta Post is linear. The values characterize the manifestation of the thought patterns underlying the English specific features written by Indonesians are: usefulness, practicality, workable. It is suggested that 1) the language learners should be familiar with the thought pattern of the target language, 2) Language learners should be exposed with the target language because the exposure to the targetlanguage may influence their thought pattern or way of thinking when writing the texts of the target language. Key words: thought pattern, linear, non linear, deductive, inductive, digression, direct, indirect, coherent, incoherent

Abstract

This research is about one of the methods in teaching English in Reading Class in Language Faculty at University of Stikubank. It aimed at using an interactive method to improve oral communication skills. It is a qualitative research and employs five data collection methods, namely: class observation, teaching journal, document collection, questionnaire and interview. The population was the language students of STIKUBANK University. There were thirty one students. They attended the Reading Class in the semester. They read a narrative text, find out the roles then they act based on the plot of the narrative text. The results show that the students are highly motivated to have a role play as one of the methods used in reading class. They feel that they get enough practice to use English actively besides their understanding in reading a narrative text. The process of reading the text is satisfactory. The students can understand the plot and they can transfer it into a scenario of a play. Having got the scenario the students perform their play with enjoyable performances. Their oral communication in acting the role is tolerable too. Thus, reading to act by a role play can be used a Reading Class. In addition, it is suggested that in reading class the lecturer should give another interactive method besides a role play. She or he may apply many different activities to make a reading class more interactive.     Keywords: role play, plot, scenario, action research, teaching   journal.

Literary analysis invites students to the ongoing debate about the place of the theory and practice in the literature classroom. This article helps students develop and articulate their interpretations from a variety of theoretical approaches by equipping them with the critical tools for reading. The writer only highlights four literary analysis on American literature in views of  poems and prose. These primary texts include Joseph Bruchac’s poem “The Circle of Thanks”, Thomas King’s “Border”, Waldo Emerson’s “Self-Reliance, and Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklin Ferry”. Not all theories but some are discussed in details in this article. As a final point, these types of involvement are something that can not be imposed; it must come from the materials and courses that are implemented in the classroom.   Keywords: Literary analysis, criticism, interpretation, American literature, theory and practice

Abstract

The study attempts to investigate Nick Vujicic’s  testimonial monologue (www.lifewithoutlimbs,org) on the basis of  Fairclough (1992)’s Discourse and Social Change on Intertextuality to find out the modes and strategies of intertextuality. The study reveals that three modes of intertextuality are employed, namely sequential intertextuality (41.38%), embedded intertextuality (5.18%), and mixed intertextuality (53.44%), implying that the text was a self-reflection. With respect to the strategies of intertextuality, five strategies are employed, namely discourse representation (43.12%), presupposition (27.58%), negation (12.06%), metadiscourse (6.89%), and irony (10.35%), implying that Vujicic wanted to form his own discourse. Finally two types of biblical allusion are adopted, namely direct allusions (5.17%), indirect allusions (48.27);  the rest (46.56%) is self-reflection, implying that Vujicic’s text was proselytizing in nature. Meanwhile, the pedagogical implication is that intertextuality is indispensible  in writing or public speaking.   Key Words : Allusion, Testimony, Intertextuality, Proselytizing
