Abstract

Conservatism is a very interesting issue to be studied. Moreover, conservatism is often seen with a negative connotation. This is reasonable because conservatism is a term that is quite elusive and often debated. This paper focuses on the cultural-philosophical dimension of globalization and the cultural traits of American conservatism. Moreover the world today is on the threshold of a new global capitalism, one which constitutes not only opportunities, but keep risks for development. The opportunities for development and great risks are found in all dimensions of globalization. In this case, humans are positioned as main actors on how to preserve the cultural traits. They can be agents of determinism in their home. In addition Indonesia has experienced the same process of global evolvement as many other countries have. Democracy, fairness, intellectual improvement and dedication towards an independent country considered as recent values, are from the inter-relation of thoughts and cultures between Indonesia and other countries. Key words: Gilded age, individualism, cultural traits, global era, conservatism

Abstract

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the politeness strategies, explaining the degree of directness, and FTA potential of the utterances adopted in the model conversations of English textbooks for sixth graders in Semarang. The findings indicate that (1) the model conversations display doing no FTA, FTA off Record, Neg FTA Bald on Record and Pos FTA Bald on Record as the politenesss strategies with doing no FTA as the dominant strategy. (2) The utterances in the model conversations tend to be direct. (3) Some utterances contain FTA potentials. In order to justify whether the conversations are appropriate or not, a further study needs to be conducted with respect to the organization of conversation, thus genre or coherency, turn taking organization, and other variables such as the social status of the participants, gender, time force, circumstances, etc. Key words: politeness strategy, FTA, model conversation.

Abstract

English phonological processes happen both in word and phrase levels. In the word level, it occurs when a morpheme is combined with another morpheme. One of the sound will experience a change because of the influence of the other morpheme. The English phonological process  also occurs in  a phrase level. This change is caused by the influence of syntactic factors. This study aims at explaining the forms of phonological processes of English language that occur in word level, concerning the processes of assimilation  and some other morpho-phonemic changes. In explaining the phonological processes, the writer uses the Generative Phonology Theory which is firstly introduced by Noam Chomsky in 1957. The Generative School of Phonology was founded by Noam Chomsky in the late 1950s.  Its basic premises are that phonological structure reflects the linguistic competence of the individual native speaker to compute a phonetic representation for the potentially infinite number of sentences generated by the syntactic component of the grammar.   Key words: phonological processes, assimilation, morpho-phonemic changes, generative phonology, linguistic competence.
