Abstract

The current study is aimed at investigating to what extent the seventhsemester students of FBIB- UNISBANK are aware of American culture uponcompletion of Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) class, assigning 25 students. The subjects were given a survey questionnaire, focusing on the four variables,(1) Fashion, (2) Food, (3) Dating, and (4) General Codes of Conducts.Interviews were also held to verify their responses and to further investigatethe stance toward the American culture. The findings show that most of thestudents have positive attitudes towards American Culture, and some of them haveadopted the America’s ways of life in terms of fashion, food, and dating. Only fewof them adopted American social conducts with little modification. However, theinterviews yields that they are culturally adoptive at the cognitive level inthe sense that they still maintain their oriental thought patterns. Individualismand honesty refer to different things as viewed by both countries. Finally, thestudy recommends that CCU class be made ‘competence-based’ with the studentsactively exploring information for themselves. Further researches are stillwidely open.Key Words: culture, American, fashion, foods, dating, codes of conducts

Abstract

ELT in Indonesia has a differentposition in the latest curriculum published by the government. This is due tothe students’ interest that is varied and their interest is arranged into a newprogram structure in the curriculum. The students can choose their own interestwhen they are on the ninth grade. For some reasons proposed by some scholarswhom are experts in education, they say that approaching to be a part of globalcommunity, Indonesia should produce students who have good English literacy. Ifthe latest curriculum is implemented by every school in Indonesia, there willbe a significant result concerning to the human resource quality of Indonesia. The government as the policy makers should involve teachers in the process ofcurriculum development but in reality the teachers are not involved in theprocess. The students will be victimized by the new curriculum. We can learnfrom the statement delivered by the policy makers that English is a terrifyingsubject for students without giving any proof to support their opinion. Whatthey said is not scientifically true as they demand that English is just alocal content in the curriculum. As a lecturer, I try to propose a newperspective that can help teachers to teach English without any doubt due tothe position of English subject in the curriculum. The idea is about CTL(Contextual Teaching and Learning) in ELT (English Language Teaching). This isnot a new idea but just a new perspective to proof that somehow we should havegoo English literacy. Keywords       : CTL, ELT, curriculum

Abstract

There are four skills inlanguage that needed to communicate ideas. Those are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Writing is oneof the skills that the students must learn inclass. This skill seems to be the most difficult for some of the students wholearn English as second or foreign language. At the basic level, writing is anact of committing words or ideas to some medium. On the other hand, writing isa work of inventing ideas, thinking about how to express the ideas andorganizing them into sentences that will be clear to readers.  Writing itself is not a skill that cannot belearned. By the help of the teacher and a lot of exercises, the students willbe able to improve their ability in writing. Some exercises that can help thestudents are controlled writing. The examplesof controlled writing are imitating, rewrite a story using the clues given, combining sentences, completingsentences, and arrange sentences into chronological order.  The aim of thispaper is to show the need of controlled writing as an exercise to improve students’ability especially beginner in writing for communicating their ideas. Keywords: controlled writing, writing exercises.

Abstract

Indonesia is a large nation in terms ofgeography, population, ethnics, cultures, and vernaculars. Indonesian 1945constitution guarantees that the ethnics, cultures, vernaculars in Indonesiawill be taken care of by the government. But in reality, speakers of manyvernaculars in Indonesia are getting less and less. Sneddon states that this iscaused by lingua franca and language shift (2003: 203). Vernaculars will bepreserved if they are respected, used, and inherited to the followinggeneration. And maintaining them will lead the unity in diversity. Friberg(2011) states that languages that can be maintained are the ones written andcan be read. We should not only use our national language, but also ourvernaculars in order to maintain our regional languages, our native localidentity. And as people of multilingual community, it is better if we aremultilingual. For example: Indians are used to speaking five up to sixlanguages, based on the languages spoken by people around them. It should beborne in mind that vernaculars reflect local cultures, local values, local identity. The exposure to regional languages will make people familiar with thelanguages. And as a result, the people will be familiar with their own culturalvalues and other people’s cultural values. Komorowska (2010) claims thatunderstanding others’ languages will promote intercultural competence, understanding and communication between citizens. And this will lead to peaceprocess, to deeper knowledge of other communities and their cultures, and inconsequence to promote tolerance. Key words: Vernaculars, language maintenance, language shift, lingua franca, peace, tolerance, multilingual, multicultural, cultural values, inter-cultural understanding,inter-cultural competence, endangered language, language decay

Abstract

Living in patriarchal society makes women have tostruggle hard to be heard. This is because everything is determined by malestandard, including what is appropriate or not. When women find a way tovocalize their thought, we have to chew this a little bit. We need toreconsider whether women’s voice are really appreciated or women have become atool or hand extension for men to rule the world. This article would like tosee how a strong woman as representated by Amanda tends to preserve the idea ofmale oriented in The Glass Menagerie. The discussion shows that although it is shown that Amanda is able to act asthe head of her family to replace her husband, her strong will is beingmis-used by the patriarchal system to educate her children according to systemvalues. It demonstrates that men shadow has become a lingering panthom forwomen in their movements toward liberty. Keywords: male shadowing, patriarchalsociety, The Glass Menagerie
