Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tradisi dan perubahan seni rejung pada masyarakat Basemah di Pagar Alam, Sumatra Selatan. Rejung merupakan tradisi lisan berbentuk pantun bersahut yang dilantunkan dengan iringan musik sebagai media komunikasi, penyampai nilai moral, adat, dan identitas budaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan perubahan yang terjadi pada aspek instrumentasi, fungsi sosial, dan bentuk penyajian rejung. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif melalui observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan studi pustaka. Data lapangan diperoleh dari budayawan dan pelaku seni rejung di Pagar Alam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rejung mengalami transformasi yang signifikan. Pada aspek organologi, instrumen tradisional seperti biola sayak, dambus, dan empew-empew sebagian besar telah digantikan oleh gitar, biola modern, akordeon, dan bass elektrik. Pada aspek fungsi sosial, rejung yang semula menjadi sarana komunikasi spontan, pendidikan adat, dan ekspresi personal di ladang, sawah, atau halaman rumah, kini lebih sering hadir sebagai hiburan panggung, festival budaya, dan konten digital. Pada aspek penyajian, rejung berubah dari bentuk spontan dengan dialek Basemah yang kuat menjadi pertunjukan yang lebih terstruktur, menggunakan tata panggung, aransemen modern, serta campuran bahasa daerah dan bahasa Indonesia. Meskipun demikian, rejung tetap mempertahankan nilai esensialnya sebagai ekspresi budaya kolektif masyarakat Basemah. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa perubahan rejung merupakan bentuk adaptasi budaya yang tetap berpijak pada identitas lokal.Musical Transformation and Shifting Social Functions of Basemah Rejung in Pagar Alam, South SumatraAbstractThis study examines the tradition and transformation of rejung in the Basemah community of Pagar Alam, South Sumatra. Rejung is an oral tradition in the form of call-and-response pantun, performed with musical accompaniment, serving as both a medium of communication and a vehicle for conveying moral values, customs, and cultural identity. This research aims to describe changes in its instrumentation, social functions, and performance practices. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. Field data were collected from a cultural expert and practitioners of rejung in Pagar Alam. The findings show that Rejung has undergone a significant transformation. In terms of organology, traditional instruments such as biola sayak, dambus, and empew-empew have largely been replaced by guitar, modern violin, accordion, and electric bass. In terms of social function, rejung, which was formerly used as a spontaneous medium of communication, customary education, and personal expression in rice fields, farms, and home yards, is now more frequently presented as stage entertainment, cultural festival performance, and digital content. In terms of presentation, Rejung has shifted from a spontaneous form strongly rooted in the Basemah dialect to a more structured performance that incorporates stage design, modern arrangements, and a mix of local and Indonesian languages. Despite these changes, Rejung continues to preserve its essential values as a collective cultural expression of the Basemah community.Keywords: Rejung; Oral Tradition; Cultural Transformation; Local Identity; Musical Transformation
