Abstract

The escalating planetary crises of biodiversity loss and climate change have catalyzed a profound search for post-anthropocentric paradigms in environmental ethics and law. Two of the most significant movements to emerge are the Rights of Nature (RoN), which seeks to grant legal personhood and standing to ecosystems, and the theoretical framework of Multispecies Justice (MSJ), which calls for a radical re-imagination of justice that includes the flourishing of all biotic and abiotic beings. While often presented as allied projects, this paper argues that a deep and under-examined normative tension exists between them. The Rights of Nature approach, for all its power, is frequently grounded in a Western liberal legal tradition that relies on the concept of discrete, rights-bearing individuals. This can inadvertently codify a static, entity-centric ontology that risks ecological fragmentation and struggles to adjudicate the complex, relational entanglements of living systems. In contrast, Multispecies Justice, drawing from Indigenous cosmologies, post-humanist philosophy, and political ecology, emphasizes relationality, process, and the situated well-being of all constituents within dynamic socio-ecological assemblages. This paper critically analyzes this constitutive tension through a detailed philosophical examination and a comparative analysis of two seminal RoN cases: the Whanganui River (Te Awa Tupua) in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Vilcabamba River in Ecuador. It explores how a rigid rights-based framework can fail to resolve interspecies conflicts and may reinforce the very ontological separations it seeks to overcome. The paper concludes by proposing a synthesized model of “Relational Ecological Governance,” which seeks to integrate the potent legal enforceability of RoN with the nuanced, context-sensitive, and process-oriented ethics of MSJ. This model offers a more robust, ecologically literate, and truly transformative foundation for an Earth jurisprudence capable of navigating the Anthropocene.

Abstract

Public institutions in developing countries often struggle to translate technological investments into tangible improvements in employee performance. While Electronic Human Resource Management (e-HRM) is recognized as a catalyst for efficiency, its effectiveness in African universities remains underexplored. This study investigates the critical mediating role of Knowledge Management (KM) in the relationship between e-HRM constructs—Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, and Facilitating Conditions—and Supporting Staff Job Performance in Tanzanian public universities. Grounded in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Nonaka’s SECI model, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 362 supporting staff from three universities. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results indicate that KM fully mediates the effects of Effort Expectancy (β = 0.110, p = 0.005), Social Influence (β = 0.207, p < 0.001), and Facilitating Conditions (β = 0.076, p = 0.029) on job performance. In contrast, Performance Expectancy revealed no significant indirect effect (β = 0.018, p = 0.510). The findings extend UTAUT theoretically by emphasizing Knowledge Management as a central mechanism through which perceptions of ease of use, social support, and institutional resources enhance performance, thus unpacking the “black box” between technology perceptions and outcomes. For practice, the study underscores that universities must invest not only in technology but also in knowledge-sharing platforms, training, and collaborative practices to optimize e-HRM benefits, a lesson pertinent to resource-constrained environments globally.

Abstract

This paper examines the connection between parental responsibility and rising moral challenges in contemporary Nigeria from the backdrop of Proverbs 22:6, which addresses the role of parents in teaching morals and spirituality. This study argues that the decline of societal ethics, including corruption, indiscipline, and the erosion of communal integrity, finds its origin primarily in the collapse of family-nurtured moral education and the neglect of biblical doctrine that once informed Nigerian homes. With a theological and socio-cultural approach, the paper looks at how value distortion and moral dissent among children have been brought about by modernization, globalization, and the breakdown of parental authority. Proverbs 22:6 is an enduring paradigm for restoring moral order, focusing on early and intentional moral instruction based on faith and example. The paper highlights the central position of parents as moral guardians and calls for collaborative efforts by families, religious institutions, schools, media, and government towards effecting moral reformation. It asserts that the moral reformation of Nigeria must begin at the family level, where integrity, discipline, and godliness are imparted. Lastly, a comeback to the wisdom of Proverbs 22:6 is a spiritual and practical means to rehabilitate a fair, accountable, and ethical society.

Abstract

This paper provides a critical examination of how Plato's concept of the enlightened self offers a profound and transformative alternative to the foundational premises of modern social contract theories. Through a rigorous textual analysis of The Republic and other relevant dialogues, combined with a critical engagement with contemporary scholarship, this research identifies and elaborates upon four key dimensions of this Platonic framework: the role of philosophical education in transcending narrow self-interest, the intrinsic connection between individual enlightenment and the realization of political justice, the knowledge-based (epistemic) foundations of legitimate social structures, and the goal-oriented (teleological) nature of Plato's political vision. The findings demonstrate that Plato's approach constitutes a fundamental departure from modern contractarian theories by focusing on philosophical transformation rather than on the aggregation of pre-existing, stable preferences. For Plato, political legitimacy originates not from a calculated agreement among self-interested individuals but from a shared recognition of objective goods that are achievable only within a properly ordered political community. This research concludes that Plato’s political philosophy offers not a simple rejection of contractarian thinking but provides an alternative foundation for political legitimacy based on a transformed self-understanding. This perspective addresses significant limitations in conventional contractarian approaches while robustly supporting the conditions for genuine individual flourishing within the political community.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of Socratic Questioning Technique (SQT) on the Cognitive distortions of senior secondary students (SSS) in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria. SQT is one of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)’s techniques. An experimental design using purposive and random sampling methods was used to conduct the study. The sample population consists of one hundred and twenty (120) SSS of OCAC College, Abuja, FCT, Nigeria. The research instrument, the In-School Adolescents’ Cognitive Distortion Questionnaire (ISACDQ), was administered and students’ scores determined their assigned group before and after the therapy. The data for the study were analyzed using t-test and one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the acceptance level of probability value for each test fixed at 0.05. The result of the data analysis revealed that SQT was effective in tackling the cognitive distortions of SSS without the interference of gender, religion and class/year of study. Based on findings from this study, it is evident that psychotherapeutic interventions in schools are relevant and beneficial to the academic achievements of students.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study examines the social and religious perspectives, as well as the cultural aspects, of marriage practices among the Ohafia people of Abia State, Nigeria. In Ohafia society, marriage is not just a bond between two individuals; it also involves families, lineage considerations, economic duties, religious obligations, and social responsibilities. By employing qualitative research methods and reviewing existing literature, the study examines various aspects of traditional marriage, including the roles of family and kinship, economic considerations, gender expectations, and the influence of religion on marriage practices. The findings show that Ohafia marriage involves courtship, family introduction, bride-wealth negotiation, traditional ceremonies, and life after marriage, all guided by community values, ritual customs, and ancestral approval. Bride price, gifts, and community work validate marriages and strengthen ties between families. Gender roles reflect complementary duties, which maintain stability and unity. The study also notes the influence of modern trends on current marriage practices. Therefore, marriage in Ohafia society continues to be a key instrument for reinforcing social values, moral behavior, and cultural identity. Based on these insights, recommendations are offered for preserving cultural practices, promoting gender equality, encouraging sustainable economic practices, educating youth, and conducting further research on changing marriage systems.

Abstract

Plant-based industries, also referred to as agro-based industries, encompass all industries that maintain a direct or indirect connection with agriculture. Beyond the primary production sector, weaving and textile manufacturing constitute significant components of this industry. This study intends to document the history of the Plant-based industry of the Nembe Se from the earliest times to the present day. To address the research questions, the study employed a combination of oral sources, secondary materials, and observational methods of data collection to highlight and explore the various aspects of these industrial sectors. The results of this study reveal the profound environmental influences on the socioeconomic development, activities, systems, and potential of the indigenous Plant-based industry of the Nembe people. The findings also illuminate the mutations and continuities that have resulted from developmental efforts and modernism. The study examines the factors that have militated against the activities of the Nembe indigenous Plant-based industries over time. The implications of this study could be used to promote further investigation into the development of various indigenous industries across Nigeria. Among other contributions, the study presents recommendations for both the indigenes and the government to improve the Plant-based industrial sectors for sustainable development.

Abstract

The study is anchored on Cultural Capital Theory. The theory as developed by Pierre Bourdieu is of the view that cultural events and practices could be convertible into economic capital, generating values and profit. Using qualitative and content analyses Ezza Ezekuna New Yam Festival (Oke Aku) and its Impact on the Colonial Economy of Ebonyi State are examined. This discourse is supported by a primary source material, oral interview, and secondary sources, such as books and journal articles. The research investigated the relationship between the festival and the economy of Ezza and the state at large. It consciously interrogated how the colonial regime influenced the festival and the festival’s influence on the economy. It further examined the place of the festival in socio-cultural preservations, community practices, and political activities. Close observation revealed that the festival defiantly persisted under colonialism, and contributed to the local economy through stimulation of agricultural production, increasing sales, and promotion of cultural heritage which attracted people from different parts of Ebonyi State and beyond. It is further discovered that the festival encouraged community cohesion, profit maximization and income generation. It provided insights for policy makers, cultural administrators, and stakeholders seeking to leverage cultural festival for economic growth and transformation in the area.

Abstract

This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of young adults regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for health symptom searches. As AI-powered tools like chatbots and symptom checkers become more prevalent, they offer convenient and immediate access to preliminary medical information, particularly appealing to digitally literate populations like university students. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 400 undergraduate students at the University of Uyo, Nigeria. Findings indicate a high level of engagement with online health information, with most students reporting confidence in symptom identification and frequent use of the internet for health-related inquiries. However, a significant knowledge–attitude–practice gap was observed: while many students possessed basic health literacy and held positive attitudes toward AI’s potential, their practical use of AI for health purposes was limited, and they expressed considerable anxiety about the accuracy of online information. Trust remained highest in healthcare professionals over AI-generated advice. The study concludes that although young adults are proactive in using digital tools for health information, there is a critical need for enhanced digital health literacy programs to promote the safe, informed, and critical use of AI in health-seeking behaviors.

Abstract

Contemporary Christian theology significantly shapes wealth distribution and charitable practices within Nigerian Christian communities. These theological discourses influence attitudes toward wealth, poverty, and the moral obligations of charity. In Nigeria, a notion where poverty and socio-economic inequality persist, churches serve as key actors in social welfare interventions. Despite theological teachings on generosity, socio-economic disparities persist within many church communities. This paper investigates how theological teachings on prosperity, stewardship, and justice shape wealth distribution and charitable practices within Nigerian Christian contexts. The study explores how doctrinal positions translate into practical actions of giving, resource mobilisation, and welfare outreach. Employing qualitative methodology, the study utilises analytical, critical, and expository methods of data interpretation. Preliminary findings reveal that prosperity-oriented theological discourses often encourage individualised giving linked to anticipated divine reciprocity, while churches with a theology of social justice prioritise collective responsibility and structured welfare initiatives addressing systemic poverty. Additionally, eschatological perspectives significantly influence welfare priorities, with some churches emphasising immediate socio-economic transformation while others interpret welfare as spiritual preparation for eternal rewards. This study argues that theology is not a passive endeavour but an active force in shaping socio-economic practices within faith communities, influencing the sustainability, and coordination of charitable activities. By demonstrating the interplay between theological conviction and socio-economic action, the paper contributes to scholarship in practical theology, Christian ethics, and development studies, offering insights into the potential of faith-based organisations as partners in addressing poverty and inequality in Nigeria. Also, the study shows how religious beliefs drive fair wealth sharing and lasting charity within complex societies.
