Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the ongoing integration of human rights principles within Nigeria's counterterrorism architecture. Operating in a complex and high-threat environment, the Nigerian government has undertaken significant measures to combat terrorist organizations like Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). This study acknowledges the formidable challenges faced by security forces while exploring how a deepened commitment to international human rights and humanitarian law standards can serve as a force multiplier, enhancing operational effectiveness and strengthening the vital bond between the state and its citizenry. The paper examines specific operational incidents not as indictments, but as complex case studies from which valuable lessons on procedure, coordination, and community engagement have been and can continue to be learned. It provides a detailed review of Nigeria's robust legal and institutional frameworks, highlighting progressive legislation and ongoing reform initiatives within the security sector. Furthermore, the analysis considers the strategic imperative of winning public trust as a cornerstone of effective counterinsurgency. The paper concludes that the continued and deliberate alignment of security operations with human rights norms is not merely a legal obligation but a strategic necessity for achieving lasting peace and stability. Recommendations are offered in a constructive spirit to support and build upon the government's existing efforts, aiming to fortify Nigeria's counterterrorism model into one that is both profoundly effective and unwavering in its protection of fundamental freedoms.

Abstract

This research offers a reflective and critical engagement with the meaning, enduring value, and contemporary status of philosophy. It explores the historical arc of philosophical inquiry, contrasting its classical vocation as the love of wisdom with its present-day fragmentation, marginalisation, and susceptibility to ideological drift. The paper interrogates both the internal tensions that have long animated philosophical discourse and the external disdain it often attracts in a technocratic and commercially-driven age. Drawing upon classical sources, historical episodes, and insights from modern philosophical voices, it examines the pedagogical diminishment of philosophy in formal education and the existential estrangement that has followed. Beyond mere critique, the essay advocates for a retrieval of philosophy’s authentic calling—not as arcane abstraction, but as a formative discipline that shapes the reflective, rational, and universal human being. In so doing, it affirms the irreplaceable role of philosophy in nourishing the interior life, sharpening moral clarity, and restoring coherence to the fractured modern mind.

Abstract

Environmental degradation remains a global concern, with biodegradation emerging as a sustainable approach to mitigating pollution. However, science education curricula in many developing countries inadequately address the concept of biodegradation, resulting in limited environmental awareness among students. This study investigated the effectiveness of curriculum-based instruction on biodegradation processes in enhancing environmental awareness among undergraduate science students in Nigeria. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups was employed. A total of 120 students (60 experimental, 60 control) participated in the study across two public tertiary institutions. The experimental group received structured instruction on biodegradation over four weeks using interactive and inquiry-based methods, while the control group continued with the conventional curriculum. Data were collected using a validated Environmental Awareness and Biodegradation Instruction Survey (EABIS) and analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests. Results indicated a statistically significant improvement in the environmental awareness of the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The findings demonstrate that integrating biodegradation topics into science education fosters students’ cognitive understanding and promotes environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviors. The study underscores the need for science curriculum reform and pedagogical innovation to include real-world environmental issues such as waste management and microbial degradation. It concludes that curriculum-based environmental education is an effective strategy for building ecological literacy and empowering students to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development. Recommendations are offered for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers to enhance environmental education at the tertiary level.

Abstract

The Nigerian FinTech ecosystem has emerged as one of the most vibrant on the African continent, driven by a large, young, tech-savvy population and a historical gap in traditional financial services. Concurrently, Nigeria has become a global epicenter for cryptocurrency adoption. However, this rapid innovation has occurred within a complex, often fragmented, and sometimes contradictory legal and regulatory environment. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted regulatory framework governing FinTech and cryptocurrencies in Nigeria. It analyzes the roles and sometimes conflicting directives of key regulatory bodies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The study employs a doctrinal methodology, critically analyzing primary sources such as statutes, regulatory circulars, and policy documents, supplemented by secondary sources including scholarly articles and industry reports. It identifies significant regulatory gaps, overlaps, and challenges, particularly concerning cryptocurrency bans, data privacy, and consumer protection. The paper argues that the current reactive and sometimes prohibitive stance stifles innovation and creates legal uncertainty. It concludes by proposing recommendations for a more cohesive, innovation-friendly, and forward-looking regulatory paradigm that balances the imperative of stimulating financial innovation with the critical need for market integrity, financial stability, and consumer protection.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of trauma on the psychological adjustment of in-school adolescents in Benue and Nasarawa States, Nigeria. Guided by three research questions and three hypotheses, the study employed an ex-post facto research design. The population comprised 124,698 students from 622 public secondary schools. A sample of 399 students was selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected using the Trauma and Psycho-Academic Adjustment Questionnaire (TPAQ), developed by the researcher. The instrument's content and face validity were established through expert review, while a pilot test conducted on 40 students confirmed its test-retest reliability, yielding a high overall Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.93. Data were analyzed using Mean Score and Standard Deviation for the research questions, while chi-square statistics were used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. The findings revealed that trauma significantly impacted the self-esteem, self-efficacy, anxiety, and depression levels of in-school adolescents. Based on these findings, the study concluded that trauma adversely affected the psychological adjustment of in-school adolescents in Benue and Nasarawa States. Consequently, it was recommended that school authorities and policymakers implement trauma-informed counseling services to help students manage anxiety and depression, thereby improving their emotional well-being and academic performance.

Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) on specific mental health disorders among in-school adolescents in Taraba State, Nigeria. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The population comprised 200,382 in-school adolescents across 380 public secondary schools in the state. A sample of 248 adolescents from two schools was selected for the study. Data were collected using a self-structured instrument, the “Mental Health Disorder Questionnaire (MHDQ).” Analysis involved mean and standard deviation for the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) for the hypotheses. The findings revealed significant post-test differences between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group exhibited a significant reduction in symptoms of substance use disorders and a lower prevalence of eating disorders compared to the control group. The study concluded that CBT is an effective intervention for reducing these mental health disorders. Recommendations include implementing school-based CBT programs by substance abuse counsellors to address triggers and coping mechanisms, and for health coordinators to promote CBT sessions that challenge cognitive distortions related to body image to foster positive eating habits.

Abstract

Since the second quarter of 2015, poverty levels in Nigeria have continued to rise, with existing palliative measures proving largely ineffective. This paper explores the multifaceted factors contributing to this trend, focusing particularly on the impact of changes in governance, economic policies, exchange rate volatility, and inflation on low-income earners and small to medium-scale entrepreneurs in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The study proposes a series of pragmatic strategies to mitigate the worsening socio-economic conditions faced by these groups. These include economic diversification into sectors such as agriculture, promotion of a savings culture, adoption of insurance policies, family planning, and encouraging spousal participation in small-scale enterprises such as retail businesses and vocational trades. The paper employs a qualitative research methodology, drawing on both primary and secondary data sources to offer a nuanced analysis of the current challenges and potential pathways for sustainable economic resilience.

Abstract

The International Criminal Court (ICC), governed by the state-centric complementarity principle in Article 17 of the Rome Statute, faces a persistent legitimacy crisis. Its “unwilling or unable” test, designed to adjudicate between national and international jurisdiction, systematically marginalizes non-state, community-based justice mechanisms (CBJMs). This paper argues that this legal centralist approach delegitimizes vital local practices like Uganda’s matu oput and Rwanda’s gacaca, undermining the ICC’s efficacy and moral authority. Applying the tenets of Community Legal Pluralism (CLP), this article offers a critical doctrinal analysis of ICC jurisprudence and a comparative study of its application in contexts like Colombia and Uganda. It posits that CLP—with its emphasis on collective well-being and participatory governance—provides the necessary theoretical lens to reform the complementarity principle. The paper proposes a concrete “pluralist complementarity” framework, outlining specific criteria (e.g., procedural fairness, human rights safeguards, and community legitimacy) for the Office of the Prosecutor to assess CBJMs. Furthermore, it recommends procedural reforms to formally integrate participatory input from traditional justice authorities during preliminary examinations and trial phases. By moving CLP from theoretical critique to actionable institutional reform, this paper provides a blueprint for transforming the ICC into a facilitator of “glocalized” justice, thereby enhancing its legitimacy and effectiveness in the pluralistic global order.

Abstract

While scientific studies have extensively documented the impacts of insurgency and environmental degradation through data on malnutrition, displacement, and mortality, a critical gap remains in understanding their profound human and emotional toll, particularly on women and girls. Moving beyond statistics, this study argues that literature provides an essential humanistic lens for grappling with these lived realities. Through a multidisciplinary feminist framework combining decolonial psycho-feminism, ecofeminism, trauma theory, and intersectionality, this paper analyses Djaïli Amadou Amal’s novel Cœur du Sahel as a narrative that reflects the socio-emotional consequences of conflict and ecological collapse in Sahelian and Northern Nigerian communities. The analysis demonstrates how these intersecting crises catalyse systemic gendered exploitation, forced migration, and the deep internalisation of trauma. Crucially, however, it also reveals how the novel foregrounds resistance, reimagining education and solidarity as subversive strategies for reclaiming agency. Ultimately, this paper contends that Cœur du Sahel transcends its literary form to function as a vital work of feminist testimony, transforming individual suffering into collective memory and advocating for the dignity of girls in conflict-affected regions.

Abstract

This paper examines the central metaphysical debate concerning how objects persist through time: endurantism versus perdurantism. Endurantism posits that objects are wholly present at each moment of their existence, enduring through time as three-dimensional entities. In contrast, perdurantism contends that objects are four-dimensional space-time worms, composed of temporal parts, with only a part present at any given time. The core of this inquiry focuses on the “Problem of Temporary Intrinsics”—how a single object can possess contradictory intrinsic properties (e.g., being bent and being straight) at different times without violating the law of non-contradiction. This paper argues that while endurantism aligns with our common-sense intuition of persistence, it fails to provide a satisfactory solution to this problem, resorting to problematic claims about property instantiation being relative to time. Conversely, perdurantism offers a more ontologically parsimonious and logically coherent solution by attributing the different properties to different temporal parts of the same space-time worm. Through a critical analysis of both theories and their responses to this fundamental puzzle, this paper concludes that perdurantism, despite its counter-intuitive nature, presents a superior framework for understanding the metaphysics of persistence and change.
