Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of students’ metacognition and digital literacy skills on virtual lectures in the COVID-19 pandemic on achievement in the “Methods and Strategy on Physic Learning (MSPL)” course. The data was collected using a survey method which involved all 42 physics education students. The data analysis was carried out in two stages, namely the categorization stage and the correlation stage. Based on the data and analysis, it is known that the metacognition skill of physics education students is dominated by the “high” category with 40.47%, followed by the “medium” category at 35.71%, and the remaining 23.82% are at “low” category. As for the digital literacy, the variable is not much different from the metacognition skill, which is dominated by students with high category digital literacy skills at 42.85%, “moderate” category at 33.33%, and the rest 23.82% are at “low” category. Likewise, in the variable conceptualization of the concept of physics and physics learning strategies, physics students who are in the “high” category is more dominant than the “medium” and “low” categories, which are 33.33% and 28.58%, respectively. Based on the ANOVA table, it is known that the value of sig. 0,000, which is less than (<) 0.05. It can be said that X1 (metacognition) and X2 (digital literacy) simultaneously affect the Y variable (mastery of the MSPL concept). This is also reinforced by the calculated F value of 313.111> F table 3.22. It means that the two variables X1 and X2, simultaneously affect the Y variable (mastery of the MSPL concept).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of concentrations and salinity of seawater on the bioaccumulation of zinc and cesium in the Glauconomya virens. Salinity conditions and contaminant concentrations in the marine environment can change due to weather and other inputs.  A biokinetic experiment was carried out using a single compartment approach that used radiotracer 65Zn and 137Cs.  The experiments conducted were biota collection, acclimatization, bioaccumulation, and elimination. Acclimatization aims for the adaptation of biota in an experimental environment. Bioaccumulation was by placing the biota in an aquarium containing seawater media spiked by  65Zn, Zn, and 137Cs radiotracer contaminants. The elimination process was the release of contaminants from the body of the biota by placing them in clean and flowing seawater. The experimental results show that the uptake and elimination of Zn and Cs were influenced by these two parameters (water concentration and salinity). The highest value of Concentration Factor (CF) for Zn was 11.14 ml.g-1 under influences its concentration of  0.7 ppm in water.  In the depuration process, Zn maintained by G virens were  39.44; 31.17; 23.62; and 23.92% after these organisms accumulate this element from seawater containing 0.1; 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 ppm, respectively. The highest of 137Cs  under influences its concentration of 3 Bg.ml-1 reached 2.65 mL.g-1. The effect of salinity is directly proportional to the factor value of Zn and 137Cs concentration.

Abstract

Schools in Indonesia have been conducted environmental education programs through both curriculum activities and schools’ environmental programs. However, there was no sufficient data about the effectiveness of the programs. This study aims to identify the junior high school students’ caring attitudes to the wetland environment (CATWE) as the education outcome. The Six Junior High Schools were chosen as probability sampling areas classified as urban, central, and rural areas schools of Banjar District with total samples of 354 students aged 12-14 years. The CATWE data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire. This study found that most of the students care for the wetland environment. There were no differences in the CATWE of the three school areas. These findings indicate that the school area and the level of the “Adiwiyata” program were not the primary determining variable of environmental caring attitude education effectiveness. The highest score of the CATWE indicator was responsible; meanwhile, the lowest was hard work. Even though all the indicators have reached a care category. It is necessary to thoroughly investigate the effectiveness of the school environmental program “Adiwiyata,” outside classroom activity, and family role in environmental education.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the relationship of thinking level with the students’ ability to form a representation of proposition network on the human nervous system concept using modeling based learning. This was quantitative research with 30 science class’ students of grade XI from one private school in Bandung as the subject research, who learned using modeling-based learning (MbL). The instruments used to measure the thinking level were 19 numbers of multiple choices and 2 essays that were developed based on Marzano and Kendall’s level thinking indicator. The result of this research shows that the thinking level of senior high school’ students has reached L3 (analysis) with minimum standard mastery ≥70. The higher the expectation of students’ thinking level, the lower the minimum standard mastery will be reached. The correlation result showS no significant relationship between thinking level and the students’ ability to form a proposition network on the study of neuron structure and function (r= 0,075; p=0,692) with low concept complexity. The significant relationship between thinking level and the ability to form proposition representation is obtained during the study of the central nervous and peripheral nervous system (r= 0,506; p= 0,004) with higher concept complexity. It means the higher students’ thinking level, the better their abilities to form a proposition network. MbL could be recommended for learning biology concept especially abstract concept like the human nervous system. This research concluded that students’ thinking level reached level 3 (analysis) and MbL can facilitate a significant relationship between thinking level and the ability to form proposition networks if the concept taught has a higher complexity compared to the lower complexity concept.

Abstract

Wadi is one of traditionally fermented food types using basic materials of fish, salt, and lumu. As nutritive traditional food, wadi quality needs to be developed and maintained through social education. Wadi production innovation has not been done yet by the wadi makers since their information is limited on production techniques for better quality wadi. To promote local wisdom conservation, non-formal education for low educated-wadi makers is needed using simple media. Laboratory experiment and local wisdom-based booklet development is intended to broad their mind and skill in wadi production in the rural areas of Central Kalimantan. This development followed the model of Peck (1988). It contained non-formal product oriented-education materials for the wadi makers. The booklet has been validated by experts in community education, biotechnology, and learning media, and applied to wadi producing communities. Assessment instruments for booklet validation refer to non-textbook assessment instruments (enrichment books). The results showed that the booklet could be well accepted by the users and possessed very good criteria of understanding and readability value.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of metacognitive knowledge-based physics teaching materials (MKBPTM) on the ability to analyze metacognitive knowledge. These teaching materials were used in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research employed a post-test only control group design. The participants were divided into two groups: the experimental group consisting of 120 students and the control group comprising 124 students, who came from public senior high schools. The results showed that the MKBPTM experimental group had better learning outcomes than the control class using conventional-based teaching materials (CBPTM). The hypothesis testing results indicate a difference in the average score between the experimental and control groups’ metacognitive knowledge analysis skills (MKAS). The results suggest that MKBPTM has an influence on MKAS compared to CBPTM.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of literacy learning with cultural insight on science learning outcomes and the social attitudes of students in elementary schools. This research was a quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent post-test only control group design. The population of this study was 140 students, while the sample was selected by random sampling. The number of samples in this study was 100 students who were divided into two classes. The instrument used was a test of learning outcomes in the form of multiple-choices and social attitude questionnaires. Validation of the learning outcomes instrument used content validity with the Gregory test, and item validity used biserial point correlation, the reliability of the test used KR-20, different power, and difficulty level. Meanwhile, validation on social attitude instruments used content validity with the Gregory test, item validity was used product-moment correlation, and test reliability was used KR-20. The data collected were analyzed by Multivariate Analysis of Variance. The results showed that the results of the significance of all three hypotheses are 0,000, which means less than 0.05 (0,000 < 0.05). So, it can be concluded that there was a positive effect of literacy based on the exploration of science with cultural insights on thematic content mastery and social attitude. The novelty of this research integrates literacy learning with Balinese cultural insight on science learning outcomes and social attitudes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to validate the measure of student attitudes toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S-STEM). This study used the cross-sectional design to employ translation and cultural adaptation as well as providing evidence of the reliability and validity of the S-STEM. The instrument was administered to 748 pre-university students in Penang, Malaysia. Data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with AMOS 19.0. Results support S-STEM as a three-factor multidimensional construct, namely attitude towards science, attitude towards technology/engineering, and attitude towards mathematics. All statistics such as factor loadings, average variance explained, construct reliability, evidence of discriminant validity, and goodnessof-fit indices were found to be at acceptable values. These positive results are significant because although the instrument has undergone numerous modifications, such as translation and others, the generalizability of the instrument is still preserved in pre-university Malaysian students. Counselors may administer the instrument to facilitate the choice of courses to enroll at university. The research may utilize the instrument to gather data in providing measures to improve students’ participation in learning STEM. The practical implications, as well as the methodological limitations of the present study, are discussed.

Abstract

Adaptation of new habits in many aspects of life, including education, is required amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Many countries, including Indonesia, suddenly implement online learning as a realization of social distancing policies. This sudden change in the learning system has become a challenge for teachers. They must be able to integrate technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge to conduct online learning well. Therefore, this study investigates the readiness of biology teachers to face online learning based on their Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). The purposive survey method was used by distributing questionnaires and conducting online interviews. The questionnaire consists of 30 statements about the TPACK readiness of biology teachers and ten questions about the online learning process during the COVID-19 outbreak. A total of 121 biology teachers in West Java, Indonesia, participated in this study. The findings indicate that biology teachers have sufficient TPACK skills in implementing online learning. However, their technological capabilities still need to be improved. The flexibility of place and time, availability of learning resources, and increased independence of teachers and students in using technology are the advantages of online biology learning during the COVID-19 outbreak. Meanwhile, the problems faced by teachers include technical connectivity and student honesty in taking exams in the implementation of online learning. The uncertainty of when the pandemic will end makes this study important to carry out for evaluation and potential improvement of online biology learning systems.

Abstract

Previous research has reported that many high-school and undergraduate students have difficulty explaining the relationship between polarity and electronegativity even though they may be familiar with the concept of polarity. This study aims to address these misconceptions using a leaflet and assess its effectiveness using questionnaires and concept testing.  A simple, colorful printable leaflet was produced and distributed to students in Indonesia. The Leaflet on Electronegativity (LoEN) provided students with an overview of the theoretical basis of the concepts and guidance on applying these principles. The leaflet format is cheap and easy to mass-produce, which is an important factor given the limited access to other types of appropriate learning resources in Indonesia. The leaflet formed the basis of a classroom discussion activity. Visualization is known to play an important role in constructing students' conceptual understanding, so the leaflet made extensive use of diagrams to explain relevant concepts. The leaflet was printed in full color to make it visually appealing and facilitate student learning. Students were tested before and after learning with the LoEN. A Paired-sample t-test using SPSS is used to compare the pretest and posttest scores to measure the effectivity of the LoEN.A statistically significant improvement in scores (p = 0.000) was achieved, which indicates that using the LoEN in the classroom helps students understand the topic. Also, students' positive responses signify that the LoEN provides an engaging way to learn the concepts.
