Abstract

A web-based recitation program has been developed to improve students’ conceptual understanding of some fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics. The program consists of multiple-choices conceptual questions followed by immediate feedback for each option. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the program and whether the program can be used by students without any assistance of instructor. If it is the case, the program could be used by instructor to serve recitation program outside the classroom. To address the objectives, this study employed a non-randomized control group pretest-posttest design involving three groups of students. The first group (E-1) used the program accompanied by teaching assistant, the second group (E-2) used the program by his/herself without assistance, and the third group (C) learned by his/herself without the program. The study involved 73 students enrolling the introductory physics course in physics education department, State University of Malang, as the subject. The effectiveness of the program was analyzed by comparing N-gain scores of the three groups and the responses of the E-1 and E-2 students to the program. Pretest was administered after the three groups of students have learned fluid mechanics through regular lecture sessions, and the posttest was administered after the E-1 and E-2 groups have finished learning with the help of the program. The results showed that the N-gain of group E-1, E-2, and C was 0.51 (upper medium), 0.58 (upper medium), and 0.12 (low), respectively. The ANOVA test showed that the three N-gain values were statistically different (p = 0,000). The LSD post hoc test showed that the N-gain of group C was significantly different from that of group E-1 and E-2 (p=0.000), whereas the N-gain between group E-1 and E-2 was not significantly different (p=0.244). It can be concluded that the web-based recitation program was effective to improve the students’ conceptual understanding of fluid mechanics and can be used equally well with or without direct assistance from instructor or teaching assistant. The students that used the program also gave quite positive responses to the program, that the program could help them to reflect on the appropriateness of their understanding, was easy to use, and had attractive features.

Abstract

The project presents the application of the stages proposed by Poyla for solving problems in mathematics, which have been adapted in mechanical physic. Critical reading strategies have also been applied resulting in reading physical problems comprehensively. Objectives: To incorporate real problem solving as a teaching strategy in two mechanical physics courses (one experimental and another traditional), in order to characterize the group that applies the problem-solving strategy. To validate the problem-solving strategy in mechanical physics. Methods: Mixed research including analysis and contrast of results obtained from two control groups: one experimental (24 university students of Mechanical Physics) and another traditional (16 university students of Mechanical Physics). The control group approaches the study of the subjects in a traditional way where the problems proposed are solved intuitively and somehow mechanically. The experimental group solves the proposed problems by applying each of the stages of the proposed sequence. The experimental group solves the proposed problems by applying each of the stages of the proposed sequence. This study differs from previous studies in that most are related to problem-solving in mathematics and in this case, we focus on physics with the value of involving elements related to critical reading, which gives a more realistic look of the Physical phenomenon studied from the interpretation of its occurrence and how it impacts the environment, which favors its theoretical understanding and gives meaning to its mathematical modeling.

Abstract

One of the main problems in physics is the emergence of students’ misconceptions which comes from the prejudices of false starts and a naive belief. Many studies have shown that students tend to have developed their own understanding before the formal teaching is done. The ideas which are developed by students which are different from the explanations by the experts are known as misconceptions. The initial idea that has been formed by the students is very difficult to change by the teachers although the materials are presented with scientific concepts. Misconceptions diagnosis research on the hydrostatic pressure concept was conducted on 23 students of class X MIA B SMAN 3 Malang using Three-tier test. The diagnosis results that the students get misconceptions on the indicators, it explain the hydrostatic pressure is influenced by the depth and at all points located in the horizontal area in the calm liquid has the same hydrostatic pressure, and the hydrostatic pressure is proportional to the density of the fluid, include 1) students believe that hydrostatic pressure is greater at a point closer to the closed cavity (43.5%), 2) the students believe that the hydrostatic pressure is proportional to the density of the submerged object (30.4%), 3) the students believe that the hydrostatic pressure is greater on the outside of the cave because it has a larger volume of fluid so that the pressure is higher (17.4%), 4) students had misconceptions in determining the depth in case of hydrostatic pressure (13%), 5) the students believe that the hydrostatic pressure is greater in the narrow place (13%).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of students’ metacognition and digital literacy skills on virtual lectures in the COVID-19 pandemic on achievement in the “Methods and Strategy on Physic Learning (MSPL)” course. The data was collected using a survey method which involved all 42 physics education students. The data analysis was carried out in two stages, namely the categorization stage and the correlation stage. Based on the data and analysis, it is known that the metacognition skill of physics education students is dominated by the “high” category with 40.47%, followed by the “medium” category at 35.71%, and the remaining 23.82% are at “low” category. As for the digital literacy, the variable is not much different from the metacognition skill, which is dominated by students with high category digital literacy skills at 42.85%, “moderate” category at 33.33%, and the rest 23.82% are at “low” category. Likewise, in the variable conceptualization of the concept of physics and physics learning strategies, physics students who are in the “high” category is more dominant than the “medium” and “low” categories, which are 33.33% and 28.58%, respectively. Based on the ANOVA table, it is known that the value of sig. 0,000, which is less than () 0.05. It can be said that X1 (metacognition) and X2 (digital literacy) simultaneously affect the Y variable (mastery of the MSPL concept). This is also reinforced by the calculated F value of 313.111 F table 3.22. It means that the two variables X1 and X2, simultaneously affect the Y variable (mastery of the MSPL concept).
