Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the difference of mathematical representation skill, the result of science learning and its influence on problem-based learning and discovery learning model. The population of this study was 16 students of PGSD FKIP University of Lampung. Among 534 students, there were two experimental classes consisting of 35 students and each was determined through cluster random sampling.  The data on mathematical representation skills and learning outcomes of science were obtained through a description test, five questions for assessing mathematical representation skills, and ten questions for assessing science learning outcomes. From the instruments that had been tested to 30 respondents, it was obtained a valid and reliable instrument with a score of 0.505 for mathematical representation skills, and 0.832 for learning outcomes. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using normality test, homogeneity test, independent sample t-test, correlation test, and simple linear regression test. The results showed that there was no difference in the result of mathematical representation skill and science learning outcomes, between the problem-based learning model and real discovery. But there is a positive and significant linear influence between the mathematical representation skill and the learning outcomes of science, through a problem-based learning model of discovery.

Abstract

The significance of learners acquiring the skills required in the 21st century, including communication skills, teamwork, ICT-related skills and socio-cultural knowledge, imagination, critical thinking, and problem-solving, has been extensively discussed. Integrating the 21st century into the curriculum requires teachers to have knowledge and resources to foster classroom practices. This qualitative study was designed to explore the resources that Indonesian science teachers use in supporting the implementation of the skills of creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, and communication (4Cs) integrated science instruction. Data analyses include surveys, audio recordings of smalls and large group discussions, and group discussion artifacts of 28 Indonesia vocational high school science teachers to identify the type of resources that teachers have had access to support the integration of 4C into science instruction and the extent to which these resources promote the 4C integration into science instruction. The analysis indicates that teachers use multiple resources to help them prepare for 4C integration into teaching practices, including various professional development (PD) programs, various teacher collaborations, curriculum guidelines, and open resources. Teachers found that Teacher Professional Education (TPE) was the most favorable PD program, and curriculum guideline was the least effective for advancing 4C integration. Implications are discussed further.

Abstract

The physical and non-physical family environment is one of the most critical factors in student learning outcomes. This research was assessed using a mixed-method descriptive qualitative and quantitative method to see how the family environment, both physical and non-physical, with experimental science learning was conducted on 60 Junior High School students. The requirements of the respondents in this study were 30 open school students and 30 non-open school students. The results showed that: (a) family involvement motivates students when conducting experiments; (b) the feasibility of the physical environment of the family allows students to complete the experiment of making simple liquid fertilizers to the application of these fertilizers to cosmetic plants, (c) students can complete the experiment by giving directions to the online method because of the high involvement family in the learning process. Other studies state that the family environment in the form of parents ‘expectations of students’ future careers in science is the main reason for high family participation in the experimental process to provide maximum student experimental results. In conclusion, the family’s physical and non-physical environment dramatically determines and encourages students to optimize experimental science learning methods so that science education applied during the Covid-19 pandemic by studying at home can be continued and carried out experimentally. The New Normal Education Model through online and non-online methods for science learning can still be done at home, with the involvement of the family’s physical and non-physical environments that support students to complete experiment-based science learning projects. Independent learning in junior high school students can also be done by providing direct control between educators and the students’ non-physical environment, namely parents, to remain motivated.
