Abstract

The present study aims to determine the effect of the scaffolding of information literacy on the botanical literacy of prospective biology teachers. The current study employed an experimental method with a non-equivalent group design. The respondents comprised 120 students in the Biology Education Program of Malang State University (the academic year 2017/2018), divided into the control and experimental groups. Data collection was based on scaffolding information literacy among prospective biology teachers and subsequent botanical literacy tests in multiple-choice format. The botanical literacy test provides nine indicator references. Reliability testing was done using Cronbach's alpha. Data were analyzed through pre-test covariate analysis (p 0.05) for the control and experimental groups. The present study indicates that the scaffolding of information literacy has a significant effect on botanical literacy among prospective biology teachers. The findings of the current study suggest that innovation in botany learning, in this case, the scaffolding information literacy, can improve the botanical literacy of biology education students. It is necessary to undertake learning innovation with biology education students in a professional manner to enable them to transfer knowledge using scaffolding information literacy to their prospective students. In conclusion, the scaffolding of information literacy has a significant effect on botanical literacy among prospective biology teachers.

Abstract

The results of observation from several SLBs (Special School) showed that there was no LKS that accomodated Audio-Visual. So far, the LKS only available in the form of a handout that could be visualized, so that in science subject, the deaf students had difficulty in understanding sound chapter. In order to help deaf students understood sound chapter, the writer developed Audio-Visual LKS. The general purpose of this study was to develop the Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based on sound chapter of science subject for deaf srudents. The special purposes were (a) to produce Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based, (b) to describe the feasibility of  the product of Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based from the experts’ valuations as well as the users with the rating instruments available, and (c) the effectiveness of Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based application to the understanding of sound chapter for deaf students at Grade IV. The development procedure used 4-D model which consists of stages of define, design, develop, and disseminate. This study perfomed limited test to five deaf students, and extensive test to 33 deaf students from several SLBs in Surabaya and Yogyakarta. The product resulted from this development was the Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based on sound chapter of science subject with the results of the feasibility from matter experts, media experts, and users that could be categorized as good/proper. The result of effectiveness analysis from all subjects obtained t count (7.510) t table (1.694). Thus, it can be concluded that there is an effectiveness of application of Audio-Visual LKS CTL-based to the level of sound chapter understanding on science subject for deaf students at Grade IV.

Abstract

International Teaching Practicum (ITP) is a platform that provides experiences and opportunities for pre-service teachers to grow both personally and professionally in the teaching profession. This study reported the outcomes of an eighth-week ITP Program in Brunei and Indonesian’s schools for Malaysian undergraduate secondary pre-service teachers in four aspects; namely: (1) teaching strategy in science education; (2) communication skills and confidence in teaching science; (3) perspective in science education and culture; and (4) interpersonal skills in teaching science. All of the pre-service teachers shared their experiences in their weekly reflective journals and the data from the structured interviews during ITP. The findings indicated that the pre-service teachers were more creative and innovative in applying various approaches in teaching science as they must improvise the learning resources to suit the teaching context. The pre-service teachers were found to be more confident, and they experienced substantial development in their communication skills. Their views on education and culture of science also have shifted, and these attributes also have enhanced their interpersonal skills that provide opportunities for more networking and linkages with the host schools. The implication of these findings is believed to link to their belief in enhancing their professional experiences that contribute to the science teaching profession.

Abstract

This research aims to produce training program inquiry ability and in teaching science through inquiry approach (is called Program). This study used the methods of research and development. Program design began with a training needs analysis, conducted through field studies and literature, then validated and tested on a limited basis for program design. The implemented programs that have been revised in the main try out in KKGSD Bandar Lampung, by using quasi- experimental design, pretest-posttest control group design. Subjects in this study is the number of elementary school teachers in the city of Bandar Lampung, which involved teachers from primary schools located in the centre of the town, suburb, and remote area in Bandar Lampung. The instrument used was the initial test and final test, questionnaire, assessment of product format, and the observation sheet. The results showed: (1) The inquiry ability of the teacher with PPKIMS through inquiry approach it was higher than with conventional PPKIMS; (2) The inquiry ability of the teacher to teaching with PPKIMS through inquiry approach and conventional PPKIMS after training program was different, and significant improvement towards teachers inquiry ability of PPKIMS through inquiry approach, and it was higher than the conventional PPKIMS.

Abstract

The study is aimed at finding an effective learning strategy that can increase metacognitive knowledge. Metacognitive knowledge is a standard that based on 2016-revised edition of 2013 curriculum needs to be achieved by every graduate in all level of education in Indonesia. The study is conducted in three different schools and engages 207 students, which then divided into six groups. The groups are students who study under mind mapping strategy, concept mapping, reciprocal teaching using summary notes, reciprocal teaching using mind mapping, problem-based learning, and investigation group. The results showed that those studying under problem-based learning strategy spent a significantly higher numbers in metacognitive knowledge in biology learning and followed by students who study under reciprocal teaching using mind mapping. According to the finding, it is expected that teachers of Biology will practice problem-based learning strategy in their classroom in order to increase the Metacognitive knowledge.

Abstract

The trend of today’s learning goals for educational institutions is to produce pre-service teachers who think critically. Critical thinking is a higher-order thinking domain that can be taught through appropriate learning strategies. This study intended to describe the influences of the conflict-cognitive strategy in the inquiry-based learning model towards pre-service teachers’ critical thinking ability. This is pre-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample included 18 pre-service physics teachers at Mataram State Islamic University (UIN Mataram). The pre-service-teachers’ critical thinking ability was assessed using a critical thinking skill test instrument adapted from the Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test. Indicators of critical thinking ability consisted of the ability to analyze, inference, evaluate, and make a decision. The data on critical thinking ability were analyzed descriptively and statistically, where homogeneity, normality, and t-test were performed. Descriptive analysis results indicated that the average score of critical thinking ability in the pretest was -1 in the “less critical” criteria and increased at posttest to 9,89 in the “quite critical” criteria after learning using the conflict-cognitive strategy in the inquiry-based learning model. Statistically, the analysis results revealed that the implementation of the conflict-cognitive strategy in the inquiry-based learning model had a significant effect on pre-service teachers’ critical thinking ability. Therefore, the conflict-cognitive strategy in the inquiry-based learning model can be a reference and alternative learning strategy that can be implemented for specific purposes to improve pre-service teachers’ critical thinking ability.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the difference in learning outcomes in work and energy from students who learned using inquiry training model with merry-go-round techniques. This study was designed using a quasi-experimental design with 74 students as samples. The instrument developed was 21 questions about work and energy. The results show that the experimental class has the highest value of 85.27 compared to the control class with 77.56. The test results of the physics learning outcomes hypothesis were tcount (3,295) ttable (1,666), indicating that there were differences in physics learning outcomes of students who studied using the inquiry training model with the merry-go-round technique than students who studied conventionally.
