Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the students‘ differences and students‘ outcomes in English learning at State Vocational High School 3 (SMKN 3) Purwokerto, Central Java. The samples were second graders at that school. They were 177 fifteen to nineteen year old students. The results indicated that the students‘ both English learning motivation and English language anxiety were at moderate level. There was significant negative relationship between motivation and outcome, but positive correlation between students‘ anxiety and outcome was indicated. It showed that although the students‘ anxiety was high, their learning outcome was till good.

Abstract

Label is necessary for trades and education. In business world, one of the requirements that should be fulfilled by the owner of industries or Small and Medium enterprises to go international is label. In education, how to make label should be taught as the students of economics faculty are encouraged to become enterpreneurs. This study focuses on the analysis of food label genre. It aims to explain how the stages of food label under study are structured, what stages of food label have in common, and how persuasion, and information is realized. Generic analysis based on social function and systemic functional analysis are used for analyzing thirty food labels as data. In selecting the data, random sampling technique was implemented. Thirty two stages were found in the food labels. However, there was not any label under the study that have the same order of stages. The realization of persuasion, product identification and information were word group, word group and numbers, declarative sentences, and imperative sentences.

Abstract

This study aims to provide explanation on the fransfer of modalization in restructuring interpersonal clauses.As a case study, it has been deliberately directed to analyze written clauses in English texts and theircounterparts in Indonesian. Four major procedures were taken to manage the data withdrawn from thetexts, i.e. (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) data analysis, dan (4) inferencing. Based on theprocedures, it was found that in order to achieve functional equivalence, interpersonal clauses weretranslated by means of restructuring processes. The grammar of proposition has been restructured in threemajor modes, i.e. (1) the translation of polarity which includes affirmative, polar interrogative, whinterrogative,and exclamative restructuring , (2) the restructuring of probability which includes the transfer ofModal adjunct, Mood adjunct, and Grammatical metaphor, (3) the transfer of usuality which was restructuredaccording its different degrees.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the analysis of discourse on advertisement. The aim of this discussion is to try to make sense of an advertisement from the point of view of linguistic construction, meaning, and its textuality. Results of the discussion indicate that in order to be called a text the observed advertisement should be analyzed by means of elliptical operation. As soon as the elliptical clauses and sentences of the advertisement are established, the meaning or intention of the advertisement can be derived. Unless the truths of the messages conveyed by the advertisement are clarified, ambiguities will still remain that will affect the understanding and response of the readers or potential buyers. As a material for discourse analysis, however, the advertisement is a very interesting thing to be talked about.   Key words: advertisement, ellyptical, ambiguity

Abstract

Of the many different dialects of English such as British English (hereafter BrE), American English (hereafter AmE), Australian English (AsE), or Canadian English (CnE) or even Singaporean English (hereafter Singlish), etc, the most common widely use across the globe are BrE and AmE. The two dialects of English, as a matter of fact, are dominantly used in any kinds of fields to mention a few such as politics, economics, diplomatic relationship, medical, information communication and technology (ICT), and education as well. The debate about the use of BrE and AmE often centers on education especially in the process of learning and acquiring the English itself because the two dialects of English provide some different and distinctive features. Because of their differences and distinctive features, the learners often find difficulties and often make them confused which one to use. This paper is attempting to review the unique features of BrE and AmE focusing on the spellings.

Abstract

STIEPARI students’ achievement was found to have declined during 2008 - 2010. Almost all language skills were affected. One attempt to rectify the problem was the creation of a program called STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). The natures of the data in this research were quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative data were taken from the post-test TOEFL scores of 30 STIEPARI students. The 30 students were divided into 2 groups, Experimental Class and Control Class. Experimental Class was taught using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method in the teaching learning process; on the other hand, Control Class was taught without using CLT. The qualitative data were taken from student comments on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). From the t-test analysis, the result shows that there is a significant difference between the mean score of post-test of the Experimental Class and the mean score of post-test of the Control Class. This result shows that, statistically, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method is an effective method to enhance students’ motivation in increasing TOEFL score. It should be mentioned, however, that TOEFL scores should be interpreted with care. To summarize students’ feedback on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC), in general, both the Experimental Class and the Control Class learned a lot from the SLC. This comment is supported by the increase in TOEFL score.

Abstract

In Japanese there is so called “keigo” (honorific/polite expressions). Honorifics (polite expressions) are used to show intimacy with another person and also to distinguish between one’s superiors and subordinates. These forms are an integral part of daily life of Japanese people. If we want to adjust to Japanese society, in order able to communicate fluently and apropiately, the use of polite expressions is absolutely required. For this reason, polite expressions are very important in communicating with Japanese people. Therefore foreign studens who are studyng in Japan need to understand polite expressions as much aspossible, event if they are not majoring in Japanese Language and culture. To analize the items above with questionnaires, field data were collected from 50 Japanese students and 50 foreign students. The questionnaires consisted of the following items: (1) the difference in the keigo used by foreign and Japanese student, (2) the difference in usage of first person pronouns, (3) ) the difference when offering something to another person, (4) the difference in a question keigo usage when asking teacher, (5) )the difference in keigo usage when discussing one’s teacher with another person, (6) the difference in keigo usage with demonstrative pronouns, (7) students opinions about keigo:differences in levels of difficulty in using keigo, differences in the use of keigo in daily life, difference in the use of keigo in daily family life, differences in the use of iscussing past and present conditions, differences in using keigo correctly and incorrectly, differences in reasons for using keigo, differences in processes of learning keigo. Foreigners’ opinions clarify that they find difficulties in using keigo as do Japanese students. Eventhough it is difficult, according to the opinions of the Japanese students, the use of keigo expressions is necessary. However, foreign students stated that keigo does not need to be used. Their reasons were: because it is very easy to make mistakes, very difficult to memorize, old language/orthodox, seldom use it, requires complicated consideration at status age, etc. and everyone should have the same status. Considering the opinions mentioned above keigo education for foreign students, especially for Indonesian students, is very much in need. Results of the interviews with Indonesian students illustrate their difficulties. Therefore, in my opinion the following points are most important in teaching Japanese keigo to Indonesian students: (1) the need to inform student a Japanese language has a keigo system and introduce to them the various kinds and forms of keigo, (2) the need to teach keigo grammar (sentence structure), (3) drill, (4) the need to teach appropriate expressions according to context using audio visual materials, (5) conversation practice simulation   Key: keigo, foreign and Japanese students.

Abstract

This article offers an overview of the conversation analysis (CA) method and its theoretical and practical applications for qualitative social scientific research. The article also discusses the method's analytical contributions and methodological applications based on the grammar of casual conversation offered by Eggins and Slade (1997). For illustration, analyses of data fragments are presented, using English language from telephone conversation recorded from one of radio programs. The recorded conversation was taken from the English Program at RCT FM radio on Sunday. The analyses try to describe and explain how language enables us to initiate and sustain casual talk. The article highlights CA's unique insights into the way social processes, relations, and identities are constructed and experienced at the level of everyday interaction, and draws attention to some of the ways in which the method can be of benefit to social scientists from a variety of disciplines. Abstract

Academic writing class in any Indonesian university context plays an important role for the students to cope with written academic assignments. This paper explores the perceptions of university students regarding their academic writing class. The participants were students of a private university in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They were selected based on their achievements in the class and their genders. The data collection made use of interviews which were conducted immediately after the completion of the class.  Individual interviews were conducted with six participants with three of them were male and the other three were female who were mainly regarded as medium achievers. The interview sessions were audio taped. The data then transcribed and analysed thematically. The discussion of the findings showed that the students gained benefits from the class through the applications of genre-based approach teaching stages, explicit teaching, and group work, which enabled the lecturer to develop the students' academic writing, critical thinking, and characters. Still, several limitations were also identified. Suggestions were offered by the participants for the betterment of the academic writing class.
