Abstract

Teaching English for young learners always gets more attention. It is because young learners are very unique. They have many characters which can change rapidly in one time. Sometimes, they display an enthusiasm for learning and a curiosity about the world around them. They also have a need for individual attention and approval from the teacher. They are keen to talk about themselves, and respond well to learning that uses themselves and their own lives as main topics in the classroom. However, they also have a limited attention span. They can easily get bored, losing interest after ten minutes if the activities are not extremely engaging.Considering those characters, there should be good ways how to treat children in delivering materials. One of ways is by exposing and utilizing children‘s senses. The senses are Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory (VAKOG). It will be very useful because a teacher not only gives something to be seen but also invites them to get involved mentally and physically. In this case, the teacher will prepare a set of teaching material where this material has very tight relationship with activities done in class. For instance, when teacher will teach part of body, she or he will prepare some pictures, songs, games, and other activities related to body‘s part. These are intended to strengthen children‘s knowledge.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) Method in Linguistic and Educational Research classroom. PBL is defined as “a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning knowledge and skills through an extended inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks”, Markham, Larmer, and Ravitz (2003:4). The problem investigated is how the implementation of Project-Based Learning directs students in writing research proposal. The subjects were 30 students of the sixth semester of the English Department, Semarang State University, 2012-2013 academic year. The subject course provides students with knowledge of the aims, principles, and kinds of linguistic and educational research methods and designs and the skill and practice in constructing research proposals. Besides, the research class enriches students’ understanding about research as a scientific inquiry to solve problems through some stages such as identifying and formulating problem, gathering and analyzing data, and ways to publish the research results (Saleh, 2012). Therefore, equiping students with skills and experiences in writing research proposal is significantly important.

Abstract

As the home of many ethnic groups, Indonesia is a showcase of diversity. On the one hand Indonesiais benefited in many crucial sectors such as economy and tourism from the rich diversity of its natural and human resources but on the other hand the country is facing a high risk of intergroup friction. The goverment of Indonesia attempted to end social conflict and disintegration in many ways, from interfaith dialogue to military occupation. Despite of all progress, little has been done to find a fundamental resolution. This study examines the importance of paradigm change in understanding conflict. The New Order approach in conflict resolution suggests that conflict is destructive and therefore needs to be avoided. However, conflict can also be constructive and in order to deal with conflict in a constructive way, institutions or organizations must be aware of this two-fold concerns and citizens must be educated in the skill to face conflict. Going deeper in the plea that education constructs a nation, using the same analogy, peace education should also construct a peaceful nation. Finally, this study proposes the use of multicultural literature to reconstruct the notion of conflict through the practice of multicultural education in early childhood education.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the language skills. It becomes an important means of communication, from which interlocutors can understand the intended meanings. The children speaking skill is influenced by many factors, one of which is the birth order. It describes how a particular child is born from the same mother such as the eldest, the middle, and the youngest child. This will actually shape character and ability of the children. Based on its function, a language is a means of communication used by individuals in their interaction or relationship with others. The speaking ability is not only related to the birth order, but also some other factors such as intelligence. The middle child usually has more speaking skill compared to the eldest and youngest child. He/ she can communicate from different directions, and his/her position gives its benefits. The middle child can develop the speaking skill from parents, older brothers/ sisters, and younger brothers/ sisters. No matter the position of the child is, his/ her speaking ability can optimally be achieved if the parents provide opportunities to communicate and practice based on his/ her needs.

Abstract

The integration of life skills in English language teaching has to be managed properly to achieve an optimal result. The exploration to the fields reveals some problems on their implementation: (1) classroom management, (2) selection of learning materials, (3) learning assessment, and (4) selection of learning methods. In addition, most teachers were fully satisfied with the existing model due to the following reasons: (1) requiring an extra preparation and teaching media, (2) incomplete communication task executions, and (3) inflexibility of model to apply in any class. To make the model of implementation better some recommendation are made: (1) incorporating materials reflecting life skills, (2) providing more comprehensible inputs, (3) developing a representative assessments, and (4) selecting a learning method that guide teacher to gradually develop communicative competence and simultaneously develop life skills.

Abstract

This article is about cross curricular English education viewed from its possible application in Indonesian curricular system. Cross curricular education can take place in the form of project work, thematic teaching and so on. In the Indonesian curricular system, cross curricular education manifests itself in bilingual education in which the medium of instruction is English. In junior and senior high schools this programs is better known as RSBI or SBI. Investigation in the field indicates that this program has been prematurely applied since some basic requirements of its application have not been met. Therefore, should this program be continued an investigation must be conducted to see which parts of the program should be modified, replaced, or even removed altogether.

Abstract

This writing aims to reveal that behind women’s weakness and tenderness there is an invisible power that can overturn men’s domination. While care seems more effective to get women’s love and respect, men tend to rely on domination. This, in fact, does not always work. Semiotic is a kind of analysis used to uncover the meaning of signs in a text. In literature this analysis serves to show different types of meaning. In this novel, there is a couple - Jerome and Monica, and their friend - Stanislas. Jerome dominates and excels in everything. He spends time hunting wild animals and doing man’s other sports. Monica is a housewife who is thirsty of her husband’s attention. She makes an affair with Stanislas, her husband’s friend. One day Jerome takes Monica, Stanislas and another woman to deer-hunting. Later he finds out that there is something between her wife and Stanislas. Driven by jealousy, he decides to kill them both. The writer used semiotic analysis because there are many signs of syntagmatic and paradigmatic meanings to discover. Key words: sémiotique, littérature

Abstract

This article is drawn from a larger ethnographic case study of a state senior high school in a city in the province of Central Java, Indonesia. The study was classroom discourse analysis, focusing on identifying and examining classroom interactional and pedagogical practices in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) lessons. CLIL is a type of bilingual education in which some content areas (such as Sciences) are learned through a foreign language. The research participants in this study were Indonesian teachers of Mathematics, Biology, and Geography who were encouraged to teach their subjects in English language because of the political ideology and educational policy at the time the data collected. The data emerged from classroom observations notes, lesson transcripts, and post-lesson interviews with video-stimulated recall. The interpretation and analysis of the data involved cross-checking different sources of evidence. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis (2006) was employed in the analysis of the data. The finding reveals that there was a salient pattern in the interactional and pedagogical practices of the subject teachers which can be called safetalk. The finding also shows that safetalk hinder the students’ second language acquisition and development. This article offers deeper insights on the interaction and pedagogy in CLIL classes, which can promote critical reflection and contribute to future English bilingual teacher education, particularly in the Indonesian educational contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the effect of Thematic Progression Patterns with Cooperative Learning Method (TP-CL) on the improvement of the students’ writing skills and the teaching- learning activities of writing courses. This classroom action research was conducted in the English Department of Magelang Tidar University in the academic year of 2011/2012. The subjects were fourth semester students who took the course of Writing III. To analyze the results of writing tests and the effectiveness of the teaching and learning activities Brown’ and Bailey’s theory (1984) was used. The results show that the implementation of Thematic Progression Patterns with Cooperative Learning Method (TP-CL) improves the writing skills of the students. In addition, the application of this model can create effective teaching-learning activities. The results suggest that lecturers teaching writing courses should introduce Thematic Progression Patterns to the students in order that they can write paragraphs coherently and organize various themes neatly in order that they can write the paragraph artistically.
