Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between learning motivation and English achievement of students of Mechanical Engineering at Politeknik Negeri Semarang, Central Java. The subjects of this study were 147 students aged seventeen to twenty one years old. The data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed using the Statistic Package for Social Science. The result indicate that the students’ motiva- tion in learning English was at moderate level. They were most motivated in learning situation, intrinsic interest, going abroad, immediate achievement, social responsibility, individual development, and the students were least motivated in information medium. There was no significant relationship between students’ learning motivation types and their English achievements as a whole. However, there is no significant positive correlations among immediate achievement, learning situation and students’ outcomes were indicated. In general, Politeknik Negeri Semarang students had low motivation in their English course but they still had good achievements. It was seen from the negative correlation between the two variables. In other words, the learning motivation does not influence their achievements.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the students‘ differences and students‘ outcomes in English learning at State Vocational High School 3 (SMKN 3) Purwokerto, Central Java. The samples were second graders at that school. They were 177 fifteen to nineteen year old students. The results indicated that the students‘ both English learning motivation and English language anxiety were at moderate level. There was significant negative relationship between motivation and outcome, but positive correlation between students‘ anxiety and outcome was indicated. It showed that although the students‘ anxiety was high, their learning outcome was till good.

Abstract

This explorative research aims to investigate the students’ English anxiety and the existing English learning model used by teachers as the baseline for the study to develop an effective English learning model. The method used in this research was a descriptive quantitative survey. The samples were 248 fifteen to nineteen year old students in second grade Banjarbaru senior high schools, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The results indicated that the students’ English anxiety were at high level, including the three components of foreign language anxiety: communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety. In addition, the studentsexperienced anxious feeling in English classroom and English learning model used by English teachers were conventional model. It means that the teachers were as the center of learning

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating whether there is relationship between students’ anxiety and students’ achievement in English as a foreign language among adolescents at Sekolah Menengah Umum Negeri 1 Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The sample was 152 students of sixteen and seventeen years old at second grade. The results indicate that the students’ anxiety in learning English as foreign language is at moderate level. There is no significant relationship between English language anxiety and students’ achievement in English as a foreign language as a whole. But a significant negative correlation between test anxiety and students’ achievement is indicated. And the difference of English language anxiety between male and female occurred on communication apprehension, it shows that female is more apprehensive than male in English communication but for overall anxiety, there is no difference in English language anxiety by gender at second grade in this school.

Abstract

The purpose of this is to investigate whether there is relationship between students’ anxiety and achievement in English as a foreign language. The subjects ofthis study were second graders of among adolescents at Sekolah Menengah UmumNegeri 1 Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The sample was the study aged between152 sixteen and seventeen years old students at second grade. The results indicated that the students’ anxiety in learning English as foreign language was atmoderate level. There was no significant relationship between the score of anxietyand students’ achievement in English as a foreign language as a whole. But a significant negative correlation between the anxiety and students’ achievement wasindicated. There was difference between male and female on communication apprehension, it showed that female was more apprehensive than male in Englishcommunication but for overall anxiety, there was no difference in English language anxiety by gender at second grade in this school.Keywords: foreign language, anxiety, achievement, adolescents, gender.

Abstract

The research is intended to explore the application of Arabic language rules to students of SMA Al Baladul Amin Kandangan and MA Ummul Qura Amuntai. This study departs from the researcher's initial observation that many of the students are passive in Arabic. Some of them are active but the grammar is not good and some students have a lot of vocabulary but they cannot use them in speaking. In addition, many students find it difficult to learn Arabic, especially in memorizing vocabulary and learning grammar as well. The results of this study indicate that 1) Arabic vocabulary used by students is illustrated by; a) The suitability of the given vocabulary. The Arabic teacher of SMA al-Baladul Amin has provided vocabulary to his students by adjusting to the subject being studied and the daily needs of students in communicating among students. The Arabic teacher of MA Ummul Qura has given vocabulary to his students by adjusting to the subject being studied. b) The ability of students to memorize the given vocabulary. High school students al-Baladul Amin did not find it difficult to memorize Arabic vocabulary. Meanwhile, MA Ummul Qura students still find it difficult to memorize Arabic vocabulary. c) Students' ability to practice vocabulary. Al-Baladul Amin high school students are easy to practice Arabic vocabulary. Meanwhile, MA Ummul Qura students still have difficulty in practicing Arabic vocabulary. 2) Arabic grammar used by students is illustrated from; a) Procedures for teaching teachers to students about grammar. The Arabic teacher of SMA al-Baladul Amin teaches his students by giving an explanation first and then immediately putting it into practice. The Arabic teacher of MA Ummul Qura teaches his students by lecturing or explaining the grammar in Arabic and occasionally asking some students. b) Students' ability to understand grammar. Al-Baladul Amin High School students easily understand Arabic grammar. As for the MA Ummul Qura students, it is difficult to understand Arabic grammar. c) Students' ability to practice grammar. Application, Rules in Arabic, and Arabic.
