Abstract

The present study was a part of a larger research. It aimed at investigating the dynamics of the students’ participation in learning argumentative writing through writing workshop. The present study took place in a natural science class consisting of 32 eleventh graders for 6 weeks. I employed questionnaire and observation to gather data, and collected the students’ works to strengthen the data analysis. The data yielded a result that the students’ participation in establishing oral and written argumentative discourse improved throughout learning cycles. In this circumstance, the students produced more talk in arguing over an issue, and became more active in writing collaboratively with their peers. Consequently, they got better in articulating their thoughts in written argumentation. It was affirmed by the improvements on the mean of the students’ argumentative writing and the quality of their argumentation.

Abstract

This article is an abstract of research conducted at French Language Department of Semarang State University. This research itself was intended to discover how far schemata (one’s prior knowledge) influence ability in understanding a passage. Reading comprehension requires not only linguistic competence but also non-linguistic competence. It happens that one does not understand a passage notwithstanding his grammatical mastery. In this research, two groups of students were used as control and experiment classes respectively. With the help of t-test, pre-test score average and post-test average were compared and analyzed to find out whether or not schematic-based model gives rise to students’ reading performance.

Communication makes use of language with its inherent features which are determined by its contents: context of culture and context of situation. Maritime communication falls within closed register which provides fixed realization which is ritualized having no other variation. The ritual constraints can be seen in its unfolding sequence of communication: Summon-response; turn-over signal and useof explisit message markers.,   Key words: contex of situation, closed register, ritual constraints, Message-Markers.

Abstract

his research is aimed at finding the theme of a unique Sufi poem expressed by Tiel Aisha Ansari entitled ―Johnny Cash Goes to Hell‖. The analysis used is Riffaterre‘s Semiotic theory. The theory uses two stages of signification. The first finds lexical meaning that is called Heuristic reading. It functions as the footstep for the next signification. The next one explores second meaning that is called Hermeneutic reading. This signification consists of four steps: Hypogram Actual, Hypogram Potential, Model and Matrix. The result of research says that this poem uses character Johnny Cash and St. Peter as the signified. The dialogue was used by Tiel to share Johnny‘s thought. Johnny, the icon for Sufis, was considerate with what people had suffered from. The Hypogram Potential says that a Sufi sacrifices his comfort just for making people who are trapped by wrongness can go back to expedience. The model makes the distribution of meanings to be two, namely morals and universalism. The morals, especially considerate, can be universal. It can go across religions. This can be proved from the using of inter-religion symbols in the poem. That‘s why ―the universal of morals‖ is the theme can be got here.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate which types of code switching, to figure out some functions of code switching and to reveal the factors that cause an increasing use of code-switching used by the students. The study belonged to a descriptive qualitative research. The result indicated that the total occurrences of code-switching generated by the 13 students are 73 times. For intra-sentential code-switching, it was found 39 utterances or 53.42% and for inter-sentential code-switching, it was found 34 utterances or 46.58%.  The most significant function of code-switching is that to emphasize the message which totally holds the highest percentage: 32.05%. The most significant factor of code-switching is that repetition used for clarification which totally holds the highest percentage: 34.25%. Finally, it can be concluded that repetition used for clarification was the most significant factor which causes the occurrence of code-switching. This factor was likely to happen because it was generated to avoid misunderstanding and to add emphasis.

Abstract

This study analyzes types of themes, theme equivalence, theme shifts in the Indonesian-English translation of thesis abstracts. The data consist of 10 thesis abstracts and their translation into English, taken from Postgraduate Program of Semarang State University from the last two years (2010-2011). The result shows that topical theme dominates the entire texts at 80.16% (198 out of 247) in ST and 79.56% (222 out of 279) in TT. Interpersonal theme is not found both in ST and TT. Most topical themes are in participants, followed by circumstance and process. The textual theme in both texts is adjunct conjunctive. Most of the themes (70.2%) are considered as non shift or equivalent. The theme shift occurrs through three processes: (1) by changing the grammatical function within the theme (11.7%), (2) by adding more themes (14.7%) and (3) by deleting themes (3.4%). It is suggested for a translator to have complete mastery over the grammatical structure of both the SL and TL and also being aware of the notions and application of shifts and equivalence.

Abstract

A work of literature cannot be separated from its time and place, in which it is made. Therefore, to get a vivid understanding of a literary work, some certain techniques are needed. One of them is by breaking down the social and cultural layers of the work. It can also be applied in Dickens’ novel Great Expectations. By breaking down and analyzing its social and cultural layers, it can be found that the novel reflects the portrait of Industrial Revolution era and its consequences such as dissolution of family units, illness, poverty, mutual exploitation, human passions, expectations, and selfishness as well.   Keyword: Industrial Revolution, society, culture, zeitgeist, social and cultural layers

Abstract

Writing competence is one of significant and basic demands for teachers in delivering their profession as educators. Many teachers feel that writing a book is a pride but it is too difficult for them to do. Many factors influence them not to start to write, such as inner motivation, institution supports, ideas, materials, and opportunities. For examples, many of them are lack of motivation to be confident course book writers, their institutions do not support their efforts and facilitate them well, they have no idea what they are going to write, they are not accustomed to provide their own lesson materials for their daily instruction—only copying from books or other resources, and most of them do not have any opportunity at all to write a course book. Therefore to create teacher-writers and produce course books in one school, One Book One Teacher (OBOT) program comes as a solution. OBOT is a program designed for teachers to be a course book writer at schools. Recently we revealed that OBOT has potential activities as an integrated program in preparing teachers to be professional course book writers. In this study, to dig up their responses on course book writing activity and OBOT implementation in their school, we conducted a descriptive survey and observation on 13 teachers in Senior High School Bina Amal Semarang. We distributed questionnaires, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted the data, then drew the conclusion. The research results show that significantly OBOT encouraged teachers to write course book actively and led them to be productive course book writers.

Abstract

This study attempted to evaluate an academic writing textbook used in English Education Study Program of Language and Art Education Faculty of IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia. The fourth edition of a book entitled ―Writing Academic English‖ written by Oshima and Hogue was critically evaluated based on two major points, namely general attributes of the textbook and the learning-teaching contents of the textbook. The general attributes of the textbook cover the book in relation to syllabus and curriculum, the methodology, the book‘s suitability to learners, physical and utilitarian attributes, and efficient outlay of supplementary materials; and the learning-teaching content of the textbook covers general elements (move of the tasks, tasks‘ objectives, etc.), academic writing (specified on research paper writing), vocabulary, grammar, and exercises. The questionnaires developed to evaluate the textbook were adapted from textbook evaluation checklist developed by Mukundan, Nimehchisalem, and Hajimohammadi (2011). The results indicate that the lecturers and students were not really satisfied with the book since it does not represent the students‘ needs and curriculum (the curriculum of English Education Study Program of IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro mandated to teach research paper writing for Writing IV course). The materials provided there are not specified to research paper writing. However, the textbook is very good in some points such as the methodology, physical and utilitarian attributes, layout of the book, general elements (move of the tasks, tasks‘ objectives, etc.), academic writing (from paragraph writing to various essays writing), vocabulary, grammar, and exercises in the area.

Abstract

This study addresses how deictic expressions of person, place and time account for vision and attitudes of a speaker in speeches on certain issues. In this qualitative study, the data consisted of four speeches delivered by Xanana Gusmao of Timor Leste. The result of the study shows that the speaker used various types of deixis, including person, place, and time deixis. Person deixis was used to introduce Timorese people, whereas more time deixis referring to present time was used to focus his attention on the present situation and did not want to turn back to the past experience with full of political and social conflicts. The speaker’s vision is reflected in the use of the first person plural ‘we’ more than the first person singular ‘I’ or ‘me’. This indicates that the speaker represents himself as an ‘insertive’ leader. He is also a sort of leader with more future vision, indicated by the use of more time deixis referring to the present and future time than those of past time, so he wanted to bring his people and nation to face the future to develop the nation and to build better relationship with its neighbouring states.
