Abstract

This study addresses how deictic expressions of person, place and time account for vision and attitudes of a speaker in speeches on certain issues. In this qualitative study, the data consisted of four speeches delivered by Xanana Gusmao of Timor Leste. The result of the study shows that the speaker used various types of deixis, including person, place, and time deixis. Person deixis was used to introduce Timorese people, whereas more time deixis referring to present time was used to focus his attention on the present situation and did not want to turn back to the past experience with full of political and social conflicts. The speaker’s vision is reflected in the use of the first person plural ‘we’ more than the first person singular ‘I’ or ‘me’. This indicates that the speaker represents himself as an ‘insertive’ leader. He is also a sort of leader with more future vision, indicated by the use of more time deixis referring to the present and future time than those of past time, so he wanted to bring his people and nation to face the future to develop the nation and to build better relationship with its neighbouring states.

Abstract

The recent study aims at investigating how far the ESP learners’ ability and the strategies they employed in mastering the Listening Comprehensions skills of the TOEFL test. The descriptive research design focused on content analysis was applied to gather the data taken by 25 students as participants of the study. In order to see the learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) skills, the 50 questions of Listening Comprehension Test were given through the Pre-Test and Post-Test during one semester course from the Longman Introductory Course For The TOEFL Test (Green Book) by Debora Philips (2004). The observation and the test were the instruments in obtaining the data needed. The data was then analyzed based on the 3 (three) major skills in Listening Comprehension part A, B, and C covered 12 sub-skills or the strategies applied. The result of the ESP learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) was moderately revealed and they were in the level of ‘Low Intermediate’ level in general. However, there was still few students had not improved yet. Moreover, in Part B (skill 7 – 9) gained the highest scores percentage among two other skills, followed by skill 10 – 12 in Part C Long Talks. Meanwhile, Part A (skill 1 – 6) achieved the lowest scores’ percentage in implementing the strategies, specifically in the skill of 4, 2 and 1 (Passives, Negatives, and Restatements) in sequent. Thus, it is suggested that students need to do more exercises on TOEFL Listening Part A suggested strategies by Philips (2004). Moreover, with the advanced of technology, learners can improve their English Listening skills by accessing the free online TOEFL courses from experts in the internet besides doing more drillings on YouTube channels and Podcasts.

Abstract

The Speaking is a complex language skill that involves not only articulating words and sentences but also expanding and expressing ideas meaningfully. This study investigates how using Disney's "Moana" as a teaching tool improves speaking skills in second-grade students at SMPN 1 Biboki Selatan, focusing on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. Employing Classroom Action Research (CAR) and mixed methods, the study involved 16 students from class VIIIA. Initial speaking test scores averaged 59.06%, with only 37.5% meeting the KKM (75%). After Cycle 1, scores rose to 73.12% with 56.25% meeting the KKM, and in Cycle 2, scores further increased to 86.25%, with all students meeting the KKM. Observations indicated that student activity improved from 72.72% in Cycle 1 to 83.63% in Cycle 2, demonstrating increased engagement. These findings show significant improvements in students' speaking skills and participation, validating the effectiveness of using English movies in language learning. The consistent score increases and enhanced student engagement highlight the success of the CAR approach, making further cycles unnecessary as all students achieved high mastery levels by the end of Cycle 2.
