Abstract

Patriarchy places Mur, the main character in NH Dini’ s novel entitled “Bandungan Street”, as the secondary citizen, since its orientation is men. This condition impedes her to reach Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The apathy and sadness come since those needs cannot be met. It prompted her to be powerless. Then, she uses the ‘Will to Power” proposed by Nietzsche as to control the undesired condition to empower herself. At last, she can achieve self-actualization, to be the best she can be, as the highest need’s rank. It proves that women can even be the better species if they are also given the same opportunity.   Key words: patriarchy, will to power, self-actualization.

Abstract

Foreign language learning with local culture contents began from the importance of the representation of the roots of the nation in foreign language. Foreign language learning strategies which mediate local cultures and cultural values existed in a foreign language generate a global perspective on foreign cultures, not only on the articulation of local messages to foreign languages, but also it compares how the local values are relevant to the values of other nations. Eventually, learners realize that by understanding themselves, they will be able to appreciate the wisdom of other nations. French culture which was compared to Javanese cultures in this article proved the statement above.

Abstract

Simplified novels are believed to assist in the achievement of a number of language and non-language objectives. This paper will examine the possibility of using the simplified novels as supplementary materials with secondary school students from the teachers‘ perspectives. The study uses the interview as a tool to elicit data about the teachers‘ objectives and the techniques employed in teaching the simplified novels. Ten teachers are included in the sample: 4 females and 6 males. They all work in model secondary schools and teach the simplified novels to their students. It has been found that the main objective is to improve the students‘ reading skills with a moderate potential for supporting their oral/aural skills. Increasing students‘ motivation is viewed as an important objective, while non-language objectives have received no attention. As for the teaching techniques, loud reading is found to be dominant, with almost complete absence of silent and home reading. Discussion comes in the second place (5 teachers), while role play is used by only 3 teachers. The study recommends the use of more challenging materials as the teachers believe the simplified novels being used do not help increase their students‘ vocabulary. Moreover, the teachers‘ beliefs about loud reading and non-language objectives need reexamination.

Abstract

Writers, readers and critics of literature have long been engaged with the appreciation of Feminist characters and Feminist themes in literary texts. But analyzing Feminism itself, to know about its impact on the literature of love is also an area to be explored. When Feminism is studied, we find in it traits opposing the love of mankind, which increases misery for women and others resulting in the decrease and even disappearance of the literature of love, a priceless possession of human beings. Thus, this paper aims at exploring how Feminism is antagonistic to the love of mankind by being prone to exclusionist and utilitarian politics, hostile to men and children, catalytic to separation in family, and indifferent towards rape and illegal men-women physical relationship eventually contributing to the increase of human misery reflected by and resulting in the gradual extinction of the literature of love. In this research thematic analysis was followed applying Bowen Family Systems Theory, Reader-Response Theory and Theory of Phenomenology. The finding of the research may ignite the search of a love-based, family-centric and holistic approach to ensure a misery-free happy life to women which will be reflected in the rejuvenation of the literature of love.
