Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out: (1) whether or not Collaborative Writing Technique is more effective than Direct Instruction in teaching writing of argumentative essay; (2) whether the students who have high creativity have better writing ability than those who have low creativity; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching techniques and creativity in teaching writing. This experimental research was carried out in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro in the academic year of 2014/2015 from March 2015 to June 2015. The population was the fourth semester students of English Education Department in the academic year of 2014/2015, and the number of population was 126 students who were divided into three classes. The samples, which were selected by using cluster random sampling, were IIB as the experimental group and IIA as the control group. Each group consists of 42 students. The experimental group was treated by using Collaborative Writing Technique, while the control group was treated by using Direct Instruction. The data analysis shows the following findings: (1) Collaborative Writing Technique is more effective than Direct Instruction in teaching writing; (2) students with high creativity have better writing ability than those having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and creativity in teaching writing.
An Analysis of Violation and Flouting Maxim on Teacher-Students Interaction in English Teaching and Learning Process

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to analyze the type of violation and flouting the maxim of teacher-student interaction in the English teaching and learning process in MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri and also find the most frequently produced between violation and flouting of the maxim. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from the conversation between the teacher and students during the teaching and learning process and analyzed by categorizing utterances based on the violation and flouting maxim theory of the Cooperative Principle. The data were collected through the observation then analyzed by using the technique which is suggested by Miles and Huberman that consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or data verification. The result of the research showed that there are four types of maxims that are violated by the teacher and students. These are the maxim of quantity 11 (50%), the maxim of quality 5 (22.73%), the maxim of relation 1 (4.54%), and the maxim of manner 5 (22.73%). The dominant violation was the maxim of quantity with 11 occurrences. Based on the findings, there are three types of flouting maxims in which the most of flouting maxim that is occurred was the maxim of relation. They are divided into 1 (14.29%) maxim of quantity, 2 (28.57%) maxim of quality, and 4 (57.14%) maxims of relation. In conclusion, the most produced between the violation and flouting was the violation of maxim with 22 (75.86%) of total occurrences. Meanwhile, the proportion of flouting maxim was 7 (24.14%).

Abstract

Laki – laki Pemanggul Goni is one of Budi Darma‘s short stories. It was firstly published in Kompas, 26 February 2012, and was then translated by Andy Fuller in 2015. Lontar Foundation published the translated version along with the other translated Budi Darma‘s short stories in a book entitled Conversations. Budi Darma is famous of his surrealist work. It is reflected also in Laki – laki Pemanggul Goni. Therefore, this study was intended to find whether its‘ English version conveyed exactly the same characteristics of surrealism as it was in the original version. Bassnett‘s translation as comparative studies, Popovics‘ types of translation equivalence, and Breton‘s surrealism in literature were implemented as the theoretical framework. This study found that both versions did not convey precisely the identical characteristics of surrealism. The Indonesian version‘s surrealism is stronger than it is in the English version. It might occur because of the cultural gap between the author‘s and the translator‘s.

Abstract

The main function of any language is to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings. These being characteristic properties of human beings, the language a human being uses will ultimately reflect what is characteristic of him or her. Good language reflects good characteristics of the user, and vice-versa. Learning being another characteristic property of human beings, the language one learns shapes and is shaped by his or her personal characteristics. As character is the accumulation of one’s personal characteristics, there are good reasons to suggest that while one is learning and using a language, he take good care so that good character is reflected. In that way communication will be properly conducted and interpersonal relationships properly established.

Abstract

The article reports an investigation on the differences between the schematic structure of English and Indonesian research article introduction. By selecting thirty research articles from each group and analysing them using the CARS model (1990, 2004), this study has unravelled several differences. At the macro level, the English articles respectively have a higher percentage of reviewing items of previous research, indicating gap, and summarising methods. While their Indonesian counterparts tend to have a greater deal with making topic generalisations, presenting positive justifications, and stating the value of the present research. In addition, while the Indonesian articles have more unidentified schematic elements and lack outlining the structure of paper, the English ones demonstrate a higher degree of move reiteration. At the micro level, the English articles are characterised by the use personal deixes as self-mention, and more variation of linguistic clues in claiming centrality. On the other hand, their Indonesian counterparts are depicted by the absence of self-mention, the use of code mixing, and a major tendency in using amplifiers and evaluative adjectives in claiming centrality. These differences might be partially influenced by the writers’ culture, knowledge, editorial policy, social environment, and in certain cases, the technical problems.
Errors Made by Vocational School Students in Translating Analytical Exposition Text

Abstract

The research aims to describe the kinds of translation errors made by vocational school students in translating analytical exposition text from English into Indonesian. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the research was the eleventh graders of Fashion Program of SMK Al Asror Semarang. An analytical exposition text consisting of 5 paragraphs (source texts) and all of its’ translations in Indonesian (the target texts) were used in the research to find out the translation errors. Then the researchers classified them into 5 kinds of translation errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, p. 698). The results of the research revealed that there were 232 translation errors found in students’ translation. There were translation errors in the form of incorrect word (60.3%), punctuation (26.3%), missing word (6.0 %), word order (5.2%), and unknown words (2.2%). In conclusion, the three most prominent error categories made by the students were incorrect word, punctuation, and missing word errors.

Abstract

This research is about curriculum of 2013. In this thesis, the writer was interested in analyzing the Roles of Students and Teachers in English Classes in Senior High School 2 Ungaran.  The aims of the research were to find out the roles of teachers and students in Senior High School 2 Ungaran, and it was also aimed to identify the constraints in applying the roles of teachers and students in the English classes using in Senior High School 2 Ungaran.  This research design used a descriptive qualitative method. The research results show that the teachers had implemented their roles as facilitator, classroom manager and informant. However, they could not perform their roles as the ideal informant since they had to frequently get involved directly to explain more, particularly in structural and grammatical rules, and the time limitation also prevented them to provide feedback since they frequently could not finish the tasks. The constraints faced by the teachers to apply their roles in the English classes were the complication of the documents, the students with different range of skills, different quality of students’ roles, the time limitation, and dominant Teacher’s Talking Time (TTT). 
The “F Word” Among Bilingual Children in Their First Language

Abstract

A new phenomenon comes up early today that the F word or fuck has been becoming popular among children regardless of the setting. The study examines the children’s perception towards the F word in two cities in East Java: Surabaya (a metropolitan city) and Jombang (a sub-urban city). To investigates F words' usage among fifty children eight – fourteen years old in these two places, a descriptive qualitative method was employed by conducting interviews and observation. The result shows six perceptions through the F word: impolite word, an angry expression, a friendly word, a joke, and an offensive word. The way in which they acquire the F word varies, as does the purpose and the function of the F word as a wave of anger, sarcasm, conformity, solidarity, and frustration.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the combination of discussion and discovery technique gives better effect to the students' vocabulary mastery than that of vocabulary-drill discussion technique. Based on review of related theories, the proposed hypothesis of this research is as follows: The use of discovery-discussion technique gives a positive and significant effect in improving intermediate-two level students' vocabulary mastery better than that of vocabulary-drill discussion one. The population of this research is all intermediate-two level students of Conversation Program at Global Lingua English course Tegal. For the purpose of this research, I randomly took eighteen out of fifty-five students as the research sample which were then grouped into two groups (with equal number of students in each group), the experimental group and the control group. I used vocabulary tests in the form of multiple choice with four options as the research instrument. The analysis of the data is done using t-test. And from the computation using SPSS, it shows that the result of t-test is 2.645 while t-table with degree of freedom (d.f) is 16 in the level of significance of 5% is 1.745.  Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected because t-ratio is higher than t-table ( 2.645 1.745). Based on the result of the above analysis, it can be inferred that the discovery-discussion technique does give better and more significant effect than the vocabulary-drill discussion one in improving intermediate – two students’ vocabulary mastery in a conversation class.   Key Words: Intermediate-two level, vocabulary mastery, Discovery-Discussion combination technique, conversation class
Validity and Reliability of Teacher-Made English Summative Test at Second Grade of Vocational High School 2 Palopo

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the validity and reliability of the English summative test for the second grade of Vocational High School 2 Palopo. The research applied mix-method design (Qualitative-Quantitative). The researcher analyzed the data using validity and reliability formula by Suharsimi Arikunto and Kuder-Richardson’s. There were 40 multiple choice questions of English summative test. This research used expert judgement as validator to analyzed and commented the validity and reliability of English summative test made by the English teacher at second grade of Vocational high school 2 Palopo. The result indicated that the test items of English summative test at second grade of Vocational High School 2 Palopo had good content validity. Based on the percentage, the researcher found that the English summative test was 80% valid in terms of its conformity with the indicators. The items tests that represent the suggested indicators in the syllabus were 32 items and the inconformity items were 8 items. The reliability of English summative test was 0.6132. It means that the reliability of English summative test was in classification into the high level (0.60-0.799).
