The commanding function is also mostly found in the officer’s conversations, especially when they were facing an emergency situation. Meanwhile, the words used by the officers, flight attendants, and the captain were showing respect and courtesy. So that the threatening function was less found in this movie. There are no requesting and begging functions because this movie tells about the incident of the Sichuan flight 8633, including the service of the aircraft officers and the confidence of the officers in facing the emergency situation at that time.

Abstract

One of the ways to improve the quality of education in Indonesia is by initiating the program called Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (Pilot International Standard School-ISS). This program provides grants to selected schools to implement the teaching and learning process to comply with the international standards as in the developed countries. Some subjects, including Mathematics and Sciences are taught by using English as a medium of instruction in the classroom. Textbooks for these subjects have been prepared in both Indonesian and English. However, the teachers are not yet ready to conduct the teaching and learning activities in English, so there seems to be some problems in the classroom due to the lack of English proficiency among the teachers. With respect to this issue, the school can adopt Content-Based Instruction in which the students would learn the language as a by-product of learning about real-world and encourage the collaboration between subject matter teachers and English language teachers.   Key words: International Standard School, Mathematics, Sciences

Abstract

Age as a factor to succeed in children’s second language acquisition (SLA) has been a controversial issue for over a period of time. Some studies analyzing the issue found that age is the main factor to determine children’s success in SLA. Responding to the issue, this paper aims at exploring the notion of early bilingualim compared to monolingual children. In addition, this paper mainly focuses on the advantages of being bilingual in a earlier ages. The discussion reveals that bilingual children get more benefits in their language performance than monolingual children. As conclusion, it is suggested that “additive bilingualism” could be applied in Indonesia which English as the foreign language is used at school, while using Indonesian is still maintained at home.

Abstract

The present study investigates the occurrence of corrective feedback in the learning process and teachers’ perspectives in giving the corrective feedback. The participants in the present study were two teachers and twelve children ranging from five to six years old. They were enrolled in Mondial School, an immersion school in Semarang, Indonesia. All of the children were Indonesians and some of which were Chinese descendants.  This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach in the purpose of analyzing each utterance produced by teachers in classroom interaction and teachers’ perspectives towards the corrective feedback used. As the basis of data analysis, RantaLyster’s Classification of corrective feedback was applied. The findings showed that 85% of teachers’ utterances used didactic recasts in giving feedback to children’s errors. These errors were mostly grammatical errors due to language transfer. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the teachers have a tendency to use corrective feedback expressed explicitly in correcting speech errors in children, rather than implicitly or indirectly. Meanwhile, the perception of teachers’ tendency in giving corrective feedback through didactic recast was due to the effectiveness of didactic recast in encouraging children to correct errors in their speech. Teachers also added that giving corrective feedback was intended to encourage children to be aware of the structure of the language more precise without teaching grammar deductively, so the grammar was expected to be absorbed and understood by the children themselves.

Abstract

You’ll Apologize If You Have To (2015), a short story by Ben Fowlkes, portrays the struggle of an American in pursuing his dreams. The primary data of this research is the narration and dialogues uttered by the characters: Wallace, Kim, Molly, the Old Lady, and the Green-Jacket Man. Those data are classified based on the American dreams (Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Livingston, Sherman, 2014; Cullen, 2003; Mailer, Thompson, Wolfe, 2009), specifically those related to material wealth. The result of this research reveals that in their daily life, the characters have their perspectives on seeing America as the land of dreams. Generally, they dream of a better life and happiness. However, this short story also portrays American dreams as a paradox because not all Americans have the privilege to achieve those dreams.

Abstract

A poetic text has its own aesthetic values through its form and language. This statement was proposed by a movement called Formalism and later was known as New Criticism. The movement assumed that the aesthetic qualities of a poem are revealed in its poetic devices such as imagery, meter, symbol, and the like. New Critics assumed that an interpretation of a poetic text in regard to the author or the historical background will bring about what they called as the Intentional and Affective Fallacies. Otherwise, a poetic text will convey a certain meaning through its own devices. New Critics assume that language devices of poetic works embody some paradoxes or discordant and contrary qualities. Not only focusing on ambiguity, irony, and paradox, the New Critics also find out a tension or a reconciliation of the conflicts through a close reading on the poetic devices of the works themselves. Meanwhile, a poetic work will also suggest a certain central idea or theme. In this case, a close reading of the two poems is meant to find similarities and differences of the tension and theme in both poems.   Key Words:   Formalism, New Criticism, Tension, Ambiguity, Irony, Paradox, the Intentional and Affective Fallacies
