Teaching English for Elementary level is very important for preparing students to be ready and well prepared generation to be met with the future demand like communication and technology. In the light of communication, Indonesia is one of countries that join in agreement of ASEAN Economic Community which uses English as the language for global market in ASEAN. Dealing with communication, it is clear that nowadays almost all modern technology using English such as computer, gadget, etc. There are more student access internets or gadget for accessing game than playing the traditional ones. That is surely not a bad thing when students are exposed much to internet. Yet, being exposed to the traditional ones is also a good idea so that Indonesian students would be those who are aware of their own culture. Seeing those two things, the demand of being able to use English for communication and an effort of making the students aware of traditional games they have, we are interested in investigating the effectiveness of traditional games as a technique for teaching English for Elementary school students. Through games, teachers can create various contexts in which students have an opportunity to use English for communication, exchange information, and express opinion (Wright, Betteridge and Buckby, 1984). The aims of this resech is to find out whether traditional games are effective to be used in English teaching and learning. This research was conducted at SDIT Lukman al Hakim of fourth grader students with the number of students was 19. The design of the researh is quasi-experimental with one control group pre-test and post-test. The instruments are pre-test and post-test. The games which are used in this research are gedrik and betengan. The findings shows that traditional games are effective for teaching English. Suggestions are proposed for Englishngsinh teachers in implementing the technique in the class.

Academic literacy has long been discussed throughout the scientific disciplines. Such discussions have partly resulted in a sort of awareness in people’s mind concerning how we implement it in the areas of scientific disciplines we deal with. In the translation domain, we question how much the significance of such stuff is for the benefit of comprehensively analyzing text for inter-language rendering. This paper intends to provide an answer to such question. It deals with the use of relevant literacy to analyze any source text as a basis to produce a target text through transfer of meaning and reconstruction of language fulfilling the aspects of readability, accuracy, and naturalness.

The significance of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) has led many educational stakeholders to include the skill in educational curriculum and more specifically in the subjects that students learn. In the context of learning English, HOTS should be instilled in four language skills, especially reading skill. This skill is vital since students are demanded to be critical of what they read. Therefore, this research aimed at investigating how the reading comprehension questions in English textbooks for three different grades (X, XI, and XII) published by the Ministry of Education and Culture facilitate HOTS. By employing cognitive level of Bloom’s revised taxonomy (2001) and critical thinking task type of Numrich’s sequence (Beaumont, 2010), the questions are analyzed qualitatively. The results reveal that HOTS are realized adequately in the textbook for grade XI. In the textbooks for grade X and XII, HOTS are found in small quantity. Besides, based on Numrich’s sequence, the majority of the questions focus on the text which means that critical thinking-based questions are found in small number. Thus, it is expected that this result assists teachers, textbook writers, and future researchers to engage more on the implementation of HOTS.

Teacher is a key person in teaching and learning process. The teacher must have good strategies to teach, they also have to know the goals to reach success and how they set the students realizing those goals. Besides, content knowledge is crucial owned by a teacher to create meaningful learning for students especially in Content-Based Instruction teaching and learning context. It becomes an issue once new idea to maximize the learning process and results. This study was intended to find the pedagogical strategies applied by the teacher in the teaching learning process and to know teacher‘s content knowledge, how teacher need to understand the subject matter taught. This study was carried out in English for Maths subject of Mathematics education study program IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro which involved the teacher and the students as the respondent. This study is under qualitative case study. In collecting the data, questionnaire, observation and interview were conducted to get detail information of the issues. The result reveals: 1) the teacher combines some methods such as cooperative learning, problem-based learning and task-based learning to get the students enthusiasm; 2) based on teacher‘s educational background, although the teacher graduated from Bachelor Degree of English Education but she was able to combine English teaching through mathematics content very well. It can be concluded that Teacher‘s pedagogical strategy and content knowledge is very important in the application of content-based instruction teaching and learning.

Online learning has caused major shifts, including the assessment process inside the English Language Teaching classroom. Through a series of in-depth interviews and thorough observations, this study explored a Linguistic Subject teacher’s experience in implementing an online assessment using a Learning Media System (LMS) application called Microsoft Teams. The use of the Microsoft Teams Application helped to improve efficiency in uploading the files of students’ assignments, correcting and giving feedback to their works. However, based on the interviews, some obstacles were found during the teaching, learning and evaluation process. These include network problems, shorter time of classes and massive collusion among students make the students’ performance in doing their assignments do not always reflect their understanding and ability. While network problems and shorter face to face interaction often hinder the teaching and learning process as well as the assessment of students’ active participation, the use of blended learning in the school required teachers to be more creative and assertive in the assessment process.

This study is meant to find out the apology strategies, to investigate the development strategies from the lowest to the highest semester students, and to explain how the pragmatic transfer interferes the apology strategis used by English Department students of Pekalongan University. This study used a qualitative descriptive design and written discourse completion tasks were employed to obtain the data. As a subject study, ten students were taken from each semester, so there were forty students overall. In analyzing the data, the students’ apologies were analyzed by using Holmes classification. The findings reveal that an explicit expression of apology, in particular, the strategy of expressing regret, is the most frequent apology strategy. Alerter and explanation are also used extensively. There is development of the use of apology strategies from the lowest to the highest semester students. With pragmatic transfer, pragma-linguistic transfer is dominated by linguistic features changing from Indonesian language to English, whereas the socio-pragmatic transfer is more dominated by a socio-culture changing from Indonesian to English, making it unacceptable in English language context.

ESP is designed for a particular group of people in a specific context. The materials used are related to the learners' specialized field of study. One of the factors which is of utmost importance in language learning in general and ESP in particular is to see whether course books and other materials are useful for the purpose of the course or not. The aim of the paper is evaluating the ESP course book entitled English for International Tourism. Cunningsworth’s (1984) checklist is used to evaluate this book. Instead of the authors’ claim this book is communicative, the evaluation result shows that the exercises within the book mainly use drilling task which means it is more structural rather than communicative.

多くの外国語学習のために、漢字には画数・部首・筆順、読み方などのユニークな特性を持っているので、学び、記憶するのことは難しい。スマラン国立大学の学生に観察とインタビューの結果に基づき、漢字を読み書き方や意味を記憶するが難しいである。その理由は授業で勉強した漢字が多すぎる。今まで漢字の授業では面白いメディァを使用しているが、漢字の読む練習に中心した。授業時間が足りないので書く練習は自分で自宅でさせる。一方、日本語文に漢字を応用するのはあまりしない。 上記の事実に基づき、著者は協同学習方法で漢字学習に関する研究を行った。本研究では代替の教育漢字を提供し、その結果、学生協同の能力を向上させることができ、漢字語彙(熟語)を習得する能力を向上させることができ、積極的に学習グループに関与していることが期待されている。テストの結果はそのメソッドが熟語習得を向上させることができ、日本語文に漢字を適用する学生の能力を向上させることができることを表す。

This research is conducted to reveal how humorous utterances are constructed by manipulating semantic meaning especially dealing with lexical semantics. Lexical semantics provides multiple meanings that portray their meanings’ relationship among a word and they are potentially exploited to elicit humor. This research examines utterances manipulating lexical semantics as the strategy of humor creation in Mind Your Language situation comedy. Applying a descriptive qualitative approach, the findings indicate that five types of lexical semantics are utilized as strategies of humorous utterances creation. Those types of lexical semantics are polysemy, homonymy, homophone, hyponymy, dan synonymy. Because of their multiple relation meanings, the speaker can refer to other meanings to construct different meanings with the hearer. The speaker constructs an incongruent meaning between what the hearer’s perception is and what the speaker meant. The deviation of lexical semantics between the hearer and the speaker completely illustrates the concept of incongruity theory of humor.Â

Abstract is an important part of scientific work for both seminar presentation and journal publication in national or international level. Every writer is obliged to write an abstract for his/her publication. The aim of this study was to examine a number of abstracts in English scientific papers by non-native speakers (Indonesian lecturers). The study was focused on the linguistic and organizational features (i.e. tense shift and rhetorical function). The research results show that a number of abstracts in the data do not conform to the principles of abstract writing, that is some abstracts do not contain complete moves. In addition, the rhetorical shift is not always followed by the tense shift.  Key words: abstract, tense shift, rhetorical function, move analysis
