Abstract

Evaluation needs to be conducted regularly in order to assist the institution enhance its own performance management. Thus, this study is focused on evaluating the assessment of questionnaire rubrics used by National English Course (NEC) based on the evaluation rubrics proposed by Marshall (2014) which were concerned with the four-rating scales and the six domains covering the whole aspects of lecturers‘ performances. They are planning and preparation for Learning, classroom management, delivery of Instruction, monitoring, Assessment, and follow-up, and professional responsibilities. The data gained from the lecturers‘ interview revealed that the NEC lecturers used some domains which contained aspects of lecturer‘s performance but not all aspects used in reality. Basically, they had considered the five domains of the rubric. However, few aspects were used in each domain, for example: in domain of planning and preparation; they only used aspects of knowledge, lessons, and also engagement. It needs further revision dealing with the assessment or evaluation on teacher‘s performance, materials, and so on. Meanwhile, the data gained from document observation revealed that the content of questionnaire did not cover all the aspects for the whole domains. It only covers some domains such as planning and preparation for Learning, and classroom management. This study indicated that providing the relevant aspects as well as the rating scale in the questionnaire is needed to be used in terms of teacher‘s evaluation rubric.

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the English teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students. The profile of English teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students was based on the National Standard of Education, in section 28, sub-section 3 point a. The researcher employed descriptive evaluative method. The subjects of this research were four English teachers from different schools of Madrasah Aliyah in Kabupaten Enrekang. The purpose of the research was to describe the teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students. Based on the result and discussion, the four teachers have different quality in terms of pedagogical competence especially in understanding the students. The score of teacher 1 and teacher 4 was 3 (good). They both could understand the students’ cognitive ability, whether the good or the poor students. They also paid attention to the different characteristics or ability of the students. Besides, they already paid attention to the students’ prior knowledge. They used to review the lesson in the previous meetings before coming to the next material. In another hand, the result showed that the score of teacher 2 and 3 was different from teacher 1 and teacher 4, that was 2 (poor). In understanding the students, teacher 2 and teacher 3 ignored one point, which is paying attention to the students’ prior knowledge. They never reviewed the last material before coming to the new material. Based on the result and discussion, it could be concluded that the four teachers had different quality in terms of pedagogical competence in regard to understanding the students. Since the teachers’ quality is the most important point in developing the students’ learning proficiency, the four English teachers still need more improvement. Because in Indonesia, the teachers who meet the standards of being professional teachers are the ones who have the required qualifications and truly understand what to do, whether inside or outside the classroom

Abstract

Applicative constructions refer to those in which an underlying indirect object or oblique is realised as a coreargument. The applied argument replaces P and in most languages becomes the direct object. In mostinstances, the verb usually bears a distinctive inflection expressing the semantic relation borne by the directobject. In Javanese applicative constructions could be intransitive-based and transitive-based, and theyinvolve oblique to 2 advancement or 3-2 advancement. The N- prefix on the verb, the deletion ofpreposition, and the suffix –i/ni or –ake mark the advancement to direct object. The suffix –i/ni is used tomark locative, recipient and destination advancement, whereas the suffix –ake is used to mark benefactiveand instrumental advancement. It is also possible that advancement to direct object is not marked with anysuffix.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze communication strategies used by learners in the acquisition of a second language. In this case, this research analyzes the use of communication strategies in which English is the language of instruction.This study involved 21 students at the Department of English Language and Literature, in one of the state universities in Semarang, Indonesia. These students are second year students in the English Language and Literature Department. This research is a case study in the purpose of investigating the communication strategies used when the participants are engaged when the learning activities take place. The participants are given a conversation project in pairs and exposed to a variety of setting such as in the restaurant, in the professor’s room, and in a company. Data collection was carried out through video and audio recordings. The data obtained are then categorized into 13 categories of communication strategies (Dornyei, 1995) and sorted to obtain the frequency of occurrence. The findings indicate that the students mostly use time-gaining strategy (36%) to overcome the problem in their communication with the interlocutors. It is then followed by the use of meaningless words which occurs very frequently (18%) from all utterances, “repetition” strategy which occurs rather frequently about 16% of the total, literal translation (13%), and “use of non-linguistics means” (10%). In conclusion, choices of communication strategies are highly influenced by the level of the conversation tasks given (Wongsawang, 2001). The occurrence of certain types of communication strategies depends on the tasks given to the students and the level of difficulty of those tasks.

Abstract

This writing is conducted to demonstrate the interrelationship between the concepts of semantics and philosophy of linguistics and its implication in translation discipline. The writer starts by pointing out methods and emphasis of semantics and translation theories, although the writer will specifically discuss the practice of semantics in translating semantic situation. There are three parts of discussions in this paper: part one is mainly discussed the semantic and translation theories, part two describes the relation between the two subjects, and finally, part three shows the readers of how the semantics take place in translating written language. The writer finally wishes that the readers, especially Indonesian translators, will take benefit of understanding the semantics and use it for the benefit of as well as to denote and solve the problems and barriers in practicing translation.

Abstract

This study attempts to reveal the ideology and power expressed in the news text entitled “The burning scar: Inside the destruction of Asia’s last rainforest”. The data of this study were obtained from one of the most famous online Newspapers namely BBC. Whilst, in doing the critical analysis, systemic functional linguistics specifically the use of appraisal proposed by Martin and White (2005) was applied to find out the ideology as well as the power of the text. The findings show that there are three appraisal items found such as attitude, engagement, and graduation simultaneously. Affect is the most dominant appraisal found in the text. It represents the feelings of the people who live in Papua where their land has been destroyed by the world's largest exporter of palm oil from South Korea. Besides, they also criticize the Indonesian government which sold their land to the company without any notice to the tribe who live there. Then, engagement represents the tribe’s voices where they have to move from their land. The last is graduation which represents the tribe’s experience when they were kicked out from their land. Meanwhile, the ideology of the text is represented by the use of attitude consisting of affect, appreciation, and judgment. Furthermore, the power deals with the tribe’s tenor such as contact, status dan affect.

Abstract

Immersion program, the learning and teaching process conducted in English, has become a new trend in Indonesia nowadays in which almost every school is trying to conduct it. However, not many of the schools can do that program for it requires professional teachers, not only being able to teach in English well but also able to  prepare  the documents, making lesson plan, syllabus and media,  needed for the program. Professional teachers are badly required for the immersion classes for they play an important role in succeeding the program. Therefore, it is worth investigating to see whether the real condition of the teachers is as it is expected or not and finally, conclusions and suggestions can be put forward for the betterment of the program. Based on the observation done by the writer, it was found out that mispronunciation, misspelled, grammar mistakes, wrong diction, and some other linguistic feature problems often happened in the classroom activities. Besides, other problems were also found in the development of teaching documents, syllabus, lesson plan, and media. The development of those documents was not in line with the school- based curriculum, ignoring the level of difficulty as stated in the Bloom Taxonomy revised by Anderson. The objectives, the indicators, the evaluation formulations were still on surface and incomplete. In this paper the writer tries to show the complete result of her observation dealing with the real condition of the teachers’ competence in their teaching and learning process in English as well as their competence in developing the documents and finally give some suggestions for increasing their competence, especially in preparing their teaching documents.   Key Words: immersion class teacher, professionalism, teaching documents, teaching   and learning process

Abstract

Language is a means of communication in Literature. People can understand and analyze any story by using language. They can also find out the content of story from different country. Readers can also compare story from one country to another country. They can also translate story from different country with their own mother tongue. One example is The Red Badge of Courage. We can get many lessons and ideas from this American novel. It is a war novel, which focus on American Civil War. Henry Fleming is one of main characters in the novel. Regarding to the history of Civil War, we still have many questions from the content of it. How about the main character‘s dreaming in civil war? Can his bravery influence to his friends? What is the moral value from this war novel? People can get many imaginations and lessons from the main character, Henry Fleming. Descriptive qualitative is a method in discussing this novel. Reading, understanding, and analyzing are the necessity things to do. The idea and opinions from novel and reference books are sources in getting idea. We can take this novel is as a zero to hero novel regarding to the main character‘s activities. All soldiers in his troop surprise when they see a brave-heart person, Henry Flaming. Furthermore, Henry shows that he can beat his cowardice to be a brave man. His wound is a proof of being a hero in his troop. His questions of being a brave soldier show up after he beats all trials in civil war. Self-confidence in Henry Flaming is a way to show that a soldier must have bravery in leading a troop.

Abstract

There are four problems in translating a text. The first and main problem is the language factor. The second problem is a social one, the third is the problem that has something to do with religion or belief, and the fourth one is the cultural problem. In short, the problems have a close relation to the language and culture. So, a translator should have a good mastery of the two languages, namely, the source language and the target one. This article discusses the problems of translation having to do with culture and its impacts to translation. The strategy of a translator to overcome the problems is determined by his/her ideology: domestication or foreignization.

Abstract

Language and culture are inseparable. When people communicate to one another, they take their culture in communication; they may use the same language, but differences in accent show their register.  Language variation covers distinctions in pronunciation, grammar, or word choice within a language. It includes register and accent. This concept is reflected in the performance of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes. In the performance, the register described a group of people and their roles in the community.  It is interesting to analyze English with Javanese accents and register in the drama performance. In this performance, speaking English with  Javanese accent does not reduce the traditional values of Javanese culture.
