The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of juxtaposing pictures can improve the students’ writing ability especially in writing description. The researchers applied a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and one group post-test design. The subject of the research was the second year students of SMAN 3 Enrekang in academic year 2017-2018. The sample consisted of 32 students of XI IPA 1. The data were collected through writing test (pretest and post-test). To find out the effectiveness of juxtaposing pictures in improving writing ability, the researcher applied t-test analysis. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The value of t-test (9.09) was greater than the t-table (2.039) and degree of freedom (df) = 31. It is concluded that juxtaposing pictures is effective in improving the students’ writing ability in writing description.

This research aimed at identifying the English teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students. The profile of English teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students was based on the National Standard of Education, in section 28, sub-section 3 point a. The researcher employed descriptive evaluative method. The subjects of this research were four English teachers from different schools of Madrasah Aliyah in Kabupaten Enrekang. The purpose of the research was to describe the teachers’ pedagogical competence in understanding the students. Based on the result and discussion, the four teachers have different quality in terms of pedagogical competence especially in understanding the students. The score of teacher 1 and teacher 4 was 3 (good). They both could understand the students’ cognitive ability, whether the good or the poor students. They also paid attention to the different characteristics or ability of the students. Besides, they already paid attention to the students’ prior knowledge. They used to review the lesson in the previous meetings before coming to the next material. In another hand, the result showed that the score of teacher 2 and 3 was different from teacher 1 and teacher 4, that was 2 (poor). In understanding the students, teacher 2 and teacher 3 ignored one point, which is paying attention to the students’ prior knowledge. They never reviewed the last material before coming to the new material. Based on the result and discussion, it could be concluded that the four teachers had different quality in terms of pedagogical competence in regard to understanding the students. Since the teachers’ quality is the most important point in developing the students’ learning proficiency, the four English teachers still need more improvement. Because in Indonesia, the teachers who meet the standards of being professional teachers are the ones who have the required qualifications and truly understand what to do, whether inside or outside the classroom

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dampak intensitas pemberian corrective feedback pada pengembangan self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa melalui komunikasi daring sinkron dan asinkron pada pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dimana peneliti mendeskripsikan intensitas corrective feedback dosen dalam proses pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa Inggris melalui media komunikasi sinkronus dan asinkronus yang mampu memengaruhi perkembangan self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen pengampu mata kuliah keterampilan produktif dan reseptif dan mata kuliah konsep bahasa Inggris baik melalui media komunikasi sinkronus maupun asinkronus mampu memengaruhi self-confidence mahasiswa dengan level atau tingkat yang berbeda dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Lebih lanjut hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa intensitas pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen pengampu mata kuliah keterampilan produktif dan reseptif dan mata kuliah konsep bahasa Inggris baik melalui media komunikasi sinkronus maupun asinkronus mampu memengaruhi self-expression mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Dari hasil penelitian tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa intensitas pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen dapat memengaruhi self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. This research aims to find out the perceptions of English students towards online learning in listening classes. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The participants in this research were students of the English Education Study Program class of 2023, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Eight students were selected as participants using a simple random sampling technique. The instrument used in this research was an interview analysis qualitatively and descriptively to determine the findings from the interview transcript. Overall, students had positive and negative perceptions of online learning in listening classes. The positive perceptions regarding online learning in the listening classes were expressed as follows 1) It is fun, 2) It improves listening skills 3) It is flexible 4) It involves the use of practical applications, e.g., Google Meet, and 5) It is applied using effective strategies. Meanwhile, the students’ negative perceptions of online learning in the listening classes were expressed as follows 1) it is technical constraints, and 2) it is non-technical constraints. Even though the students' perceptions varied, based on the data obtained, positive perceptions are more dominant than negative perceptions. Therefore, it can be concluded that students had a positive perception regarding online learning in listening classes.

This study is to describe two main points, namely (1) the development of English vocabulary mastery of 7th-grade students of SMPIT Ibnu Sina, Makassar using word card games, and (2) the aspects of vocabulary that hinder their English vocabulary development. Pre-experimental research method with pre and post-test design was used to quantitatively describe the impact of the treatment given through the use of word card games in developing students' vocabulary mastery comprising three aspects, namely (1)vocabulary forms in spelling and pronunciation, (2) denotative meaning of vocabulary, and (3) vocabulary usage focusing on the use of Present and Past Tense sentence patterns both in oral and written forms and the hindering aspects of their vocabulary mastery development which are then described qualitatively. The grade 7 students of SMPIT Ibnu Sina, Makassar totalling 28 students were the population of this study using the census sampling technique. To collect data, a vocabulary test was administered in three forms of questions, namely (1) spelling and pronunciation, (2) matching for vocabulary meaning, and (3) multiple choice and making simple sentences. The results showed that (1) the word cards could develop the English vocabulary mastery of students in terms of vocabulary form, vocabulary meaning, and vocabulary use empirically indicated by the mean score of pre-tests as 58.13 taken into an average category and post-tests is 79.72 classified into a good category and (2) the aspect that hinders students' vocabulary mastery is pronunciation and sentence construction. These findings are simply considered that word card games can be implemented to bridge the development of students’ vocabulary mastery coming along with teaching English structures.

This research aims to determine students' perceptions of the use of AFDAL as an LMS in the English class of SMPIT Al Fityan School Gowa. Researchers apply qualitative methods to achieve research objectives. The data collected was in the form of questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this research were class VIII students of SMPIT Al Fityan School Gowa for the 2022/2023 academic year. The questionnaire sample was 53 students and interviews were 6 students taken using the Purposive Sampling technique. The results of data analysis based on three TAM constructs, Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness, and Attitude Toward Using, show that students' perceptions of using AFDAL as an LMS are in a good category. Therefore, it can be concluded that class VIII students at SMPIT Al Fityan School Gowa have a good perception of the use of AFDAL LMS in learning English.

This study aims to investigate the effects of teaching recount text using the GIST (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text) technique. Meanwhile, the purpose of this study is to determine whether or not students' comprehension of recount texts has increased. This study was conducted during the second semester of SMPN 4 Sungguminasa's ninth grade. With a pretest and posttest for a single group, the researcher employed a pre-experimental design. The sample consisted of 34 pupils from class 9K, whereas the population consisted of all ninth-grade students. Using SPSS 26, the researcher analyzed the data. As a consequence, the posttest's mean score of 49.26 exceeds the pretest's mean score of 77.21. Additionally, the probability value (sig.2-tailed: 0.000) is lower, according to the paired sample t-test. Also, the paired sample t-test shows that the probability value (sig.2-tailed: 0.000) is lower than (< 0.05). It means, there were significant differences in the average in using GIST strategy in teaching recount text. In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis (H1) in this study is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. In addition, GIST strategy increases students’ comprehension of recount text.

This research intends to determine the relationship between reading habits and the spelling ability of students. The research population for this research was eighth-grade students at SMPN 49 Makassar University. The researcher applied a random cluster sampling technique and chose randomly class VIII3 which consist of 32 students. The correlation design was used in the research. Data were collected using two instruments: a questionnaire to obtain the reading habits of the students was the first instrument. The second instrument was a test to obtain students’ spelling ability. The research findings showed that the average student's reading habit was in the low category. The same result for spelling ability, the students are in the low category. This can be observed from the average questionnaire result of 51 and the average test result of 38.59. In addition, the Pearson product-moment correlation result was 0.783. This denotes that the degree of the relationship coefficient () exceeded the degree shown in the R table. In this particular circumstance, , because the r value in the r table is positive, implying that the relation between the two variables is positive. In sum, the better the students' reading habits, the better the students' spelling ability. Besides, there is a two-tailed Sig. of 0.000 < 0.05, which implies that spelling ability and reading habit are significantly correlated. This implies that H0 is dismissed and H1 is acceptable. Therefore, the reading habit and spelling ability in SMPN 49 Makassar are significantly correlated.

This research aims to determine students' perceptions of social competence in English teachers. This research is qualitative research that uses a descriptive qualitative method. The instrument used in this research is the interview. Interviews were conducted with six students who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that English teachers who teach at SMP Negeri 1 Makale Utara, especially those who teach in grade eight, have fulfilled five indicators of social competence, namely: being inclusive and acting objectively, non-discriminatory, and communicative with fellow teachers, education personnel, parents/guardians, and the community.

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Politeknik Kelautan dan Perikanan Bone melalui pelatihan TOEFL selama lima hari. Pelatihan melibatkan 350 mahasiswa, 8 kelas, dan 8 pengajar, menggunakan metode simulasi tes, pembahasan soal, dan strategi pengerjaan efektif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan skor TOEFL rata-rata sebesar 25-30 poin, peningkatan pemahaman format tes, serta strategi pengerjaan yang lebih baik. Meskipun terdapat kendala teknis, program ini berhasil meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa untuk kebutuhan akademik dan profesional. Kegiatan ini mendukung upaya peningkatan kualitas sumber daya manusia di bidang kelautan dan perikanan.
