Abstract

Issues about fulfilling needs of highly able students have been discussed since some years ago. Most highly able students along with their outstanding potential are considered as important aspects of a country’s bright future. Their innate gifts which are outstanding need to be nurtured appropriately in order to meet success in their future life. Providing positively supporting environment is essential for them (Tomlinson, 1996). It is inevitable that those highly able students spend most of their time at schools. The support or provision for highly able students is generally far from enough since it is usually given by schools in terms of highly able counselors or learning support for highly able students (Waters et al, 2003). Hardly do schools provide highly able students with challenges within the subjects or curriculum enrichment. Meanwhile, possibility to adjust curriculum by using differentiated teaching approach in order to meet their need is possible. In this paper, I analytically describe the reasons or justification of giving special supports to highly able students in general mixed classrooms. Some components on how to adjust curriculum to meet or fulfill highly able students’ needs are also revealed. This differentiated teaching approach, even though mostly intended to support highly able students, is also beneficial for other students in the classrooms.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts used by Indonesian athletes in Instagram caption in Asian Games 2018, and to find out the type of illocutionary acts which is mostly used by the Indonesian athletes. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is the Instagram accounts used by Indonesian Asian Games Athletes. The data are in the form of Indonesian athletes’ 24 written utterances and categorized into types of illocutionary act based on Yule’s theory. Based on data analysis, the finding shows there are four types of illocutionary acts used by Indonesian athletes in Instagram caption in Asian Games 2018, namely representatives (14), expressives (7), directives (2), and commissive (1). Representative is mostly used by Indonesian athlete in Instagram caption in Asian Games 2018.

Abstract

The present study was a part of a larger research. It aimed at investigating the dynamics of the students’ participation in learning argumentative writing through writing workshop. The present study took place in a natural science class consisting of 32 eleventh graders for 6 weeks. I employed questionnaire and observation to gather data, and collected the students’ works to strengthen the data analysis. The data yielded a result that the students’ participation in establishing oral and written argumentative discourse improved throughout learning cycles. In this circumstance, the students produced more talk in arguing over an issue, and became more active in writing collaboratively with their peers. Consequently, they got better in articulating their thoughts in written argumentation. It was affirmed by the improvements on the mean of the students’ argumentative writing and the quality of their argumentation.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine teachers’ perception toward teaching media in English language learning in the form of educational video using Project-Based Learning elementary school students. This research used case studies as the research method by using qualitative as the research design. Elementary school teachers in Buleleng regency were the object of this research. The content of the video was designed by using Project-based learning as the steps in delivering the material. The data were collected from interviews and a checklist. The analysis result of the research was most teachers preferred to use video as the learning media. The use of the video perceived positive perception by the teacher since video brings effective learning during the pandemic.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the realization of language use, recognize the verbal interaction patterns in trading and socializing and identify the determinants of language use by the Javanese community with their non-Javanese speech-partners. The study refers to the sociolinguistic theory, based on the qualitative research by the author in 2004. Supporting data collected is daily conversation at the research location. It is found that the language use by the kiosk-owners and their workers as the members of Javanese traders’ community is closely related to their everyday social relations. The language used is Bahasa Indonesia, Javanese language and mixture of the both. The determinant factors of language use are divided into lingual and non-lingual factors. The lingual factors include Sala dialect, speech level, and Javanese language position as a mother tongue. The non-lingual factors include the multiculturalism relating to the speaker’s diversity of their ethnic backgrounds, realization of social relationships among the speakers, and cultural traditions. Abstract

This paper discussed about system constraints in ‚National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets‛ movie. The writer used the qualitative research with discourse analysis approach to explain the content of this paper. There were two data sources; it was the primary data and secondary data. The primary data were movie and the movie script of ‚National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets‛. The secondary data source were got from books, essays, articles, magazines, internet and journals. In this research, the writer used documentation as the way to collect the data. Documentation was movie script. The writer found that: (1) some people would open communication with various ways by saying: hi, hello, good afternoon, and introduce himself, (2) during 45 minutes those were 4 conversations on mobile phone. Two of them do not use an open signal, (3) there are verbal communication such as; OK, yeah, uh-huh, well, all right, and uh and non-verbal communication such as: smiling, head nodding, laughing, eye contacting, and increasing volume of voice, (4) these are a lot of statements that can be interpretable and hearable, (5) bracket signals in this movie such as intonation and shifts in body position, (6) overlaps (not-interruptions) do happen in this movie, (7) nonparticipant move to be participant by repeat sentence that he overhears in the ongoing conversation and non-verbal signal (gazing steadily), (8) the bracket signals are intonation and shifts in body position, (9) the preempt signals found in the movie are: no...no, excuse me, hoi, with respect and I am sorry, and (10) the Grice maxim of relevant is ignored.

Abstract

Language competence and pragmatic competence are significant factors in translation activity, thus there should be refined instruments, tools, and methods as well as procedures in raising awareness not only on linguistic competence of translators or students translators, but also equally important on pragmatic competence. The purpose of this writing is to suggest and trigger teachers/educators teaching translation subject at the university level particularly to make use of audiovisual as tool to increase awareness of implicatures and other pragmatic components involved in translating subtitles from English to Indonesian and vice versa. In other words, the students realise that they need pragmatic awareness in the process of text transfer. The writer uses library research to explore varieties of teaching methods and procedures in teaching translation using multimedia or audiovisual. To sum up, it is achievable to enhance pragmatic awareness in teaching translation using audiovisual as long as the teachers/lecturers/educators are able to develop material and propose a model or lesson plan of raising pragmatic awareness in language teaching, especially in the context of English as a foreign language.
Place Names in Ekegusii Language: A Cognitive Linguistics Approach

Abstract

This paper analyses place names in the Ekegusii language from the cognitive linguistics point of view. The study is grounded on three objectives: to identify and explain the Ekegusii names of places, to describe the social cultural values, and to account for the cognitive processes involved in their mapping, analysis and elucidation. The data comprises of a list of Ekegusii place names collected from two counties, Kisii and Nyamira, by interviewing people through snowballing, and later holding a panel discussion with selected elders regarding the mapping processes and meanings associated with them. The Cognitive Metaphor Theory was used to map them to the different types of conceptual domains. Findings from this study show that place names in Ekegusii are conceptualized as seasons, topography, people, animals, plants and objects (as source domains which are social-culturally determined), and portray their cultural identity and tradition. The study concludes by suggesting further research in onomastics, especially on metaphor and metonymy in other languages of the world.

Abstract

Translating metaphors is unique and specific. It needs an extraordinary skill and knowledge because it is different from translating ordinary texts. Translators of metaphors should pay attention to not only the meaning but also the context and culture of both source text and target text. Translating a metaphor is not just transferring the meaning but replacing the metaphor itself into the target language culturally and contextually accepted. It is suggested that translator can use semantic translation method when he or she translates metaphors, reproduces the same metaphors, replaces metaphors with metaphors or translate metaphors by similes. Abstract

In Gidden‘s Structuration theory, the most important concept is duality of structure, where agent and structure affects each other and have equally important position. This article is written to find out the duality of structure in Eugene O‘Neill drama entitled All God‘s Chillun Got Wings. The analysis is trying to examine the drama as one of O‘Neill‘s power to change the structure that he has. The analysis unit for the structure is taken from the the literature about the social background in American society in the late 19 th century and early 20 th century, while the analysis unit for the agent is taken from O‘Neill‘s drama as a reflection of the action in which O‘Neill implemented his power. Therefore, it is concluded that O‘Neill duality of structure can be observed through his action in the drama to change the structure which shaped him as an agent. Some of his actions has resulted in an unintended consequences which will become an unacknowledged condition of actions for another action.
