Abstract

Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s works are highly distinguished for their strong realist characteristic and profound analysis of interactions among pre- and post- colonial human beings and their place in society. One of the works that portray such characteristics is “Houseboy + Maid”, the first story in Toer’s collection Tales from Djakarta: Caricatures of Circumstances and Their Human Beings. In this research, post-colonialism and contrapuntal reading proposed by Edward Said are used as methods to interpret a literary work whose narration is about two characters who live in post-colonial Indonesia, or rather post-revolutionary Indonesia. Their unfixed identities which are interrelated through the changing event of the plot indicates that their very destiny cannot be separated from the “politicality, sociality, and historicality” of much bigger entities.

Abstract

Textbooks are very important parts in teaching and learning process. Both teachers and students, mostly, use them as the basic foundations of courses in the classrooms. Textbooks may not be able to fulfill all the needs of the teaching and learning process but their existence as teaching sources is still paramount. They become one of effective sources of learning used in teaching and learning process and as reflection of values and ideas of a person or nation. The aspect of culture can be supported by systematic and comprehensive textbooks. This research paper analyzes some textbooks used in one of Junior High Schools in Indonesia. The way the writer analyzed the textbooks was based on cultural perspective. This is mainly because, in learning English, Indonesian students should focus more on talking and discussing Indonesian culture in English rather than the English speaking countries’ culture. To analyze and examine the cultural contents in the English textbooks, the writer followed the standards set by Bryam. Byram’s criterion is considered sufficient and comprehensive. This set of checklist is driven from the idea of cultural learning and teaching as an integral part of language education. The result shows that the textbooks being analyzed covered local or Indonesian culture. This findings accentuate the needs of revisiting English teaching materials to contribute to the improvement of English Textbooks in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed at reporting the contexts of interest in needs analysis research (NAR) in the Arab World (2000 – 2019) and describing the adoption of triangulation in data collection instruments and data sources. A purposive sample of 48 published NAR was subjected to content analysis. Results revealed that needs analysis studies (NASs) in the Arab World (2000 – 2019) are interested in EAP context more than other contexts such as English for Medical Purposes (EMP) and English for Occupational Purposes (EOP). In addition, most of the NASs adopted one data collection tool and consulted outsiders as sources of data. In addition, the study found that there is lack of method and/or source interaction. In general, NAR in the Arab World suffers from several shortcomings. Based on these results, the study recommended that NA researchers in the Arab World should pay more attention to other ESP contexts. In addition, they need to address issues related to triangulation to lend reliability to their data.

Abstract

With more and more multi-lingual and multicultural crews joining the transnational seafarers’ maritime community, their competence in maritime English (Maritime ESP) becomes a public concern. There is a need for maritime English lecturers to use some effective techniques in teaching maritime English vocabulary so that students can master it well. The presentation of new vocabulary should be followed up immediately with controlled practice. ‘Wall Dictation’ is suggested since it not only can be used for practising vocabularies but also can be used for developing accuracy which leads to clear communication.   Keywords: maritime English vocabulary; accuracy; dictation

Abstract

Kelsea is a female character in a novel written by Erika Johansen entitled The Queen of The Tearling. When she is nineteen years old, she becomes a queen. Although she has the highest status in her kingdom, sometimes underestimated by men because she is a girl. The purpose of this research is to reveal Kelsea’s objections against men’s stigma in leading a kingdom. This is a qualitative research. The result of this research shows that Kelsea breaks the men’s stigma saying women are weak. Kelsea argues with the general of her army because he thinks women are bad in military strategy. Moreover, Kelsea proves that she has power to dismiss her uncle from her castle because he corrupts and takes the freedom of the women who satisfy him. In addition, Kelsea sets herself equal with her Queen Guards to learn how to fight with sword and wear armor because she will do something while those men die for her. As a conclusion, Kelsea acts as a strong woman with dignity.

Abstract

The aims of this study were (1) to find out the effectiveness of using project based learning compared to problem based learning to teach writing biography texts to highly motivated students, (2) to find out the effectiveness of using project based learning compare to problem based learning to teach writing biography texts to lowly motivated students, (3) to find out the effectivenessin teaching writing biography texts through control group to highly motivated students,(4) to find out the effectivenessin teaching writing biography texts through control group to lowly motivated students.(5)to explain the significant difference between students high motivation in writing competence and students low motivation in writing competence taught using project based learning compared to problem based learning (6) to explain the interaction between learning models, students‘ motivation, and writing biography texts.

Abstract

This paper aims to unmask President Joko Widodo (Jokowi, henceforth) ideology through his presidential speech. Using a combination of CDA and SFL as an analytical tool of appraisal system, particularly the subsystem of attitude to dismantle ideological stances behind the speech text toward the People of Indonesia. The data was obtained from the first state speech of Jokowi in 2015. Further, selecting the first state speech was the parameter of his leadership in ruling the nation. The results show that Jokowi employed all subtypes of attitude to the people of Indonesia. The subtype of Judgment mostly with positively-invoked capacity employed by Jokowi indicates that He has an ideological inclination to judge the people's character as the capable people who can overcome the worst condition. Therefore, Jokowi implicitly shows his ideological inclination toward the people that he inclination to prioritize the Indonesian people.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to observe the word stress pattern on English words ending in –IC.  It was aimed at confirming a phenomenon that there is a regular stress pattern on the group of English words above—that is the majority of those words always receive a primary stress on the penultimate syllable of the words. The background why this sort of stress pattern is worth studying is that the patterns of  stress on English words are very much arbitrary so that it is quite difficult to pronounce English words with proper stress pattern. Whereas, mistakes in assigning stress on English words may cause differences in meanings which are not desired  by the speaker. The type of method used in this study is inventory and descriptive. The findings of this research indicate that out of 2388 words inventorized from Macquarie Dictionary,  2361 (99%) of English words ending in –IC must be stressed on the penultimate syllable, while only 27 (0.01%) of this type of words displays a deviating stress pattern. The result of this research is quite useful for: firstly, learners of English who want to have a good degree of English pronunciation, and secondly,  teachers of English in guiding their students to be able to give proper and accurate stress on English words in general and English words ending in –IC in particular. To prove whether or not students as well teachers of English, especially students of English in English Departments, have made use of the result of this research in their pronunciation, it is suggested that a research on pronunciation be conducted.  Key words: stress, penultimate, syllable

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Three Step Interview (TSI) and Numbered HeadsTogether Techniques (NHT) to enhance speaking skill for the students having different motivation levels and to show if there is any interaction between teaching techniques and motivation. The participants of the research were the students of survival English Class Level of Nissan Fortuna English Course, Kudus. The research method of this study was quantitative by using 2x2 factorial experimental research designs. The data collection was done by giving questionnaire and conducting pre-test and post-test and was analyzed by using ANOVA. This study found that (1) TSI and NHT are effective to enhance speaking skill of students with different motivation level, (2) Enhancing speaking skill of the high motivated students using TSI is more effective than using NHT, (3) Enhancing speaking skill using TSI to the low motivated students is more effective than using NHT, (4) There is no interaction between the techniques and students‘ motivation. This study concluded that TSI and NHT can be used as techniques to enhance the students‘ speaking skill no matter how students‘ motivational level is.

Abstract

Based on the standard competence of Indonesian’s curriculum relating to speaking activities, the students are demanded to express meaning/ messages in both transactional and interpersonal conversation using spoken languages in every context of situation. Two different kinds of conversation have their own characteristics, from which we still encounter students facing difficulties to communicate with others. The study was aimed at describing whether by giving different time allocation for the students to practice doing transactional and interpersonal conversation can impove the students’ conversation skills. It is a classroom action research conducted in my own class; the students in a transactional and interpersonal class became the subject of the study. The class consisted of 24 students in the second semester in the academic year of 2012-2013. To collect the data, I used four ways of collecting data in the forms of observation, questionnaire, interview and video recording. Those four different ways of collecting data were used at initial, middle and final teaching learning process to measure the progress of the study. Time allocation was my teaching technique to improve the students conversation skill. Based on the result of the study, I found that time allocation has positive significance for the students’ conversation activities. This improvement was validated by involving a critical colleague and research participants. It can be seen that the students could conduct conversations in longer period of times for both transactional and interpersonal conversations using different degrees of formality, topic preferences, language uses, mode, purposes and cultural contexts. This suggests that the students need longer time to practice by which they are able to do conversation with others in very meaningful ways.
