Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate which types of code switching, to figure out some functions of code switching and to reveal the factors that cause an increasing use of code-switching used by the students. The study belonged to a descriptive qualitative research. The result indicated that the total occurrences of code-switching generated by the 13 students are 73 times. For intra-sentential code-switching, it was found 39 utterances or 53.42% and for inter-sentential code-switching, it was found 34 utterances or 46.58%.  The most significant function of code-switching is that to emphasize the message which totally holds the highest percentage: 32.05%. The most significant factor of code-switching is that repetition used for clarification which totally holds the highest percentage: 34.25%. Finally, it can be concluded that repetition used for clarification was the most significant factor which causes the occurrence of code-switching. This factor was likely to happen because it was generated to avoid misunderstanding and to add emphasis.

Abstract

As the home of many ethnic groups, Indonesia is a showcase of diversity. On the one hand Indonesiais benefited in many crucial sectors such as economy and tourism from the rich diversity of its natural and human resources but on the other hand the country is facing a high risk of intergroup friction. The goverment of Indonesia attempted to end social conflict and disintegration in many ways, from interfaith dialogue to military occupation. Despite of all progress, little has been done to find a fundamental resolution. This study examines the importance of paradigm change in understanding conflict. The New Order approach in conflict resolution suggests that conflict is destructive and therefore needs to be avoided. However, conflict can also be constructive and in order to deal with conflict in a constructive way, institutions or organizations must be aware of this two-fold concerns and citizens must be educated in the skill to face conflict. Going deeper in the plea that education constructs a nation, using the same analogy, peace education should also construct a peaceful nation. Finally, this study proposes the use of multicultural literature to reconstruct the notion of conflict through the practice of multicultural education in early childhood education.

Abstract

The era of technology brings some changes including the involvement of technology in the classroom. Among of them are reading comprehension activities. With the existence of texts in the internet, digital reading becomes a new literacy form in the learning process. Guided activities are considered important to help students deal with digital reading well. This study aims to propose activities based on Self-Regulated Learning strategy to be integrated with digital reading to keep the activities on track. This is a case study involving survey design and in-depth interview. A questionnaire was distributed to lecturers to assess how they conduct their reading classes with digital reading inside. The results can be arranged into 3 phases; Forethought and Planning phase, Monitoring phase, and Self-Reflected phase. It is important to give students time limitation to help them set their goal of learning. The monitoring of the activities can be reported in form of blog entry or on digital classroom or learning management system developed by institutions. The selfreflection can be conducted by asking students to retell the text they have read, the difficulties found and how they overcome the problems in form of podcast entry. Having these activities will help students to get involved more in various forms of technologies assisting them in learning process. These activities highlight the importance of guidance and instructions given by lecturers despite the involvement of technology and independence in learning.

Abstract

Writing is a communicative action where there is an interaction process between writer andreaders through a text. The relationship has a value as the final result to decide what amessage the writer wants to give to the readers. The writing process implies to the text itselfwhich contains a cooperative work between writer and readers. Task based approach is analternative language learning that is based on tasks. Students have to do and complete someexercises that are given by a teacher. While the writing process is an action to produce alanguage as naturally as speaking process. Through writing, we communicate our ideas toreaders. Journalism, as a subject for English students in our department, aims to give a writingskill for students by following journalism’s norms. Therefore, the writing skill is importantbecause through writing, students can write a news story in English language that can bepublished in a newspaper following the Journalism norms.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates how a literary text can be approached through a linguistic framework to enhance one’s reading and interpretation of it. It aims at examining the power of The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley by analyzing the narrator’s description of his early speeches. I draw upon the appraisal framework, and I focus on Malcolm’s utilization of affect, judgment, and appreciation in a number of his speeches that he reported in the book. In those speeches, Malcolm adopts resources from the appraisal framework to align his audience with his position. His performance of affective stance to construct the entire problem of race in America contributed to the success of his book for more than 50 years since its publication.

Abstract

his research is aimed at finding the theme of a unique Sufi poem expressed by Tiel Aisha Ansari entitled ―Johnny Cash Goes to Hell‖. The analysis used is Riffaterre‘s Semiotic theory. The theory uses two stages of signification. The first finds lexical meaning that is called Heuristic reading. It functions as the footstep for the next signification. The next one explores second meaning that is called Hermeneutic reading. This signification consists of four steps: Hypogram Actual, Hypogram Potential, Model and Matrix. The result of research says that this poem uses character Johnny Cash and St. Peter as the signified. The dialogue was used by Tiel to share Johnny‘s thought. Johnny, the icon for Sufis, was considerate with what people had suffered from. The Hypogram Potential says that a Sufi sacrifices his comfort just for making people who are trapped by wrongness can go back to expedience. The model makes the distribution of meanings to be two, namely morals and universalism. The morals, especially considerate, can be universal. It can go across religions. This can be proved from the using of inter-religion symbols in the poem. That‘s why ―the universal of morals‖ is the theme can be got here.

Abstract

This study emphasizes the implementation of dynamic assessment in reading comprehension in the English classroom of the tenth grade in senior high school. To reach this goal a mixed method as a design was used by the writers by applying a quasi-experimental research design and followed by a qualitative research design. There were two groups; the experimental class and the control class. The total amount of students who participated in this study was sixty students. In collecting the data, the writers used a reading comprehension test and an open questionnaire. After the data was collected the writers analyze the quantitative data using SPSS 21 such as; mean score and N-Gain. Meanwhile, the thematic analysis was carried out to analyze the open questionnaire. The findings of the studies should that the students reading comprehension in the experimental class are at a better level rather than the students in the control class. Moreover, according to the N-Gain measurement, the students reading comprehension in the experimental class show higher improvement when exposed to dynamic assessment.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, novice teachers have experienced considerable challenges and transformation to cope with such abrupt changes. This study aims to know the tension that novice teachers encountered during the transition of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The teaching-learning activity has now been shifting from the online class to the blended class and now to offline classes under some conditions. The method employed in this research was a qualitative method using open-ended questionnaires and interviews. The participants of this research were 5 novice teachers that first became a teacher during the pandemic. The study shows that novice teachers’ tensions were influenced by personal factors, interpersonal factors, and organizational factors. To conclude, the intervention of all members of the school is important to make good teaching-learning activities.

Abstract

Emotional management is one crucial skill that teachers should acquire. In this case, the teachers should be able to regulate their emotions to succeed in the teaching process. This study aimed to investigate how Papuan English teachers manage their emotions during teaching based on two research questions: 1. In which situation do Papuan English teachers experience positive and negative emotions? 2. To what extent can Papuan English teachers manage their emotions during teaching? The four participants who contributed to this study were experienced English teachers from two Junior High Schools in Timika, Papua, Indonesia. In this study, the researchers employed a qualitative method, specifically a descriptive case study. In collecting the data, the researchers used two types of instruments namely open-ended questions and semi-structured interviews. Meanwhile, the researchers used the thematic analysis method to analyze the data. Based on the findings, the positive emotions consisted of four elements such as happiness, motivating, confidence and pride. The negative emotions also encompassed four elements: anger, stress, sadness, and anxiety. In addition, the findings suggested that most participants had regulated their emotions properly and appropriately by employing several strategies such as avoiding harsh words during anger, self-relaxing, self-talking, and reflection. They also treated the students with care and love in building teacher-students' relationships (professional empathy).

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the religious aspects in Negeri 5 Menara, a novel by Ahmad Fuadi. To analyze the novel, the structural method was implemented to operationally describe the intrinsic elements of the novel. To reveal the meanings of the novel as a semiotic phenomenon, heuristic and hermeneutic methods were also implemented. The religious aspect found in the novel was a shared mission that brought the characters to Pondok Pesantren Madani (pondok pesantren means Islamic boarding house, which is also briefly referred to as pondok or pesantren) as santris (santri means a student of Islamic boarding house) and united them in an environment full of religious values. A proverb from hadith saying Man Jadda Wajada (whoever strives shall succeed) was clearly manifested by all characters, including the teachers and the santris. The moral messages depicted by the author through the narratives of intellectuality and spirituality clearly indicated religious values of this novel.
