Abstract

The present research is concerned with how creative the students are in writing activities. By multi-teaching strategies, they were expected make use of various resources they could find before writing. They could feel the breeze, the sounds of the wind, the passers-by talking, and the singing of birds prior to their writing. By this strategy, the researcher would like to know how embodied approaches to teaching contribute to creativity in students' narrative writing. Writing interest and habits should be cultivated as early as possible at school through more writing practices instead of memorizing theories of writing. Writing courses in university should be designed based on a need analysis depicting students’ level of readiness before the courses start. Writing courses should not be limited to activities in classroom. Outside classroom activities and activities with various stimuli helping students to get inspirations should also be conducted. A number of fictional works (e.g. short story and novel) qualified to serve as writing models for students should be provided. Further research focusing on other genres such as expository, descriptive, argumentative, and narrative texts should be conducted.

Abstract

Most migrant families living anywhere in the world, are concerned with maintaining their ethniclanguage, in order to sustain a sense of belonging to the country of their origin and enableextended family harmony. This study explores the survival of Sundanese language among eightIndonesian families of West Java origin (Sundanese speakers) living permanently in Melbourne,Australia. Most of these families migrated to Australia in the 1950s as Colombo Plan scholarsand unskilled labourers. Semi-structured interviews and home observations showed that, despitebelieving in the importance of Sundanese language in their diasporic life, speaking Sundaneseis the only practice that most of the participating parents, can do to maintain their language, alongside Bahasa Indonesia and English, to show they belong to the Sundanese culture. However,Sundanese language levels of politeness limit its use among their Australia-born second generation, making this ethnic language unlikely to survive. The young people only understand and copy afew routine words of greetings and short instructions. The study also suggests that the parentsneeded to be accommodative in order to maintain the Sundanese language by combining it withEnglish and Bahasa Indonesia.Key words: Sundanese language maintenance, Indonesian diaspora, parental advice and values

Abstract

Acceleration program is claimed to be designated for gifted children. However, the implementation of the program is still considered sporadic and exclusive. This study aims at developping a comprehensive guidance and councelling for gifted child using Molgram’s model in acceleration inclusion setting. The research question is “ how is the development of comprehensive guidance and counseling for gifted children through Milgram’s model in acceleration-inclusion setting applicable and affective?". This research applied mixed methods as its design which utilize researchand development as the umbrella in three phases. The first phase, a preliminary study which produced a hypothetic model. The finding shows that comprehensive guidance and councelling for gifted children in acceleration-inclusion setting (the model) can be constructed based on home, school, and community; it can be implemented to non-gifted, mildly gifted, moderately gifted, and profoundly gifted children, focusing on general critical thinking, specific creative talent, general intelligence, and specific intellectual ability. The comprehensive guidance and councelling should also implement assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as integration with context. The second stage was the conceptual and empirical validation, which generated an operating model to be tested for its effectiveness in the third stage.

Abstract

The research was aimed at identifying Indonesian and Thai graduate students’ competence in foreign language, English or other foreign languages, describing their study skills by documenting their foreign language learning strategies, and documenting the ways in which they use their competence in English or other foreign languages to facilitate their learning processes. Participants of the study possessed different foreign language skills other than English. Some Indonesian students could speak French and Japanese, and Thai students were able to speak Chinese and Laos. However, their foreign language skills were mostly poor. Only a few students claimed that they were good foreign language speakers. It is believed that when individuals do not practice their foreign language skills frequently, they will lose their skills acquisition as they are not able to keep their language knowledge in their memory. In terms of language use, they speak foreign language(s) for academic, professional, economic, and cultural purposes. In sum, both Indonesian and Thai graduate students are mostly classified into receptive type of learners as they tend to improve receptive language skills rather than productive ones because for their academic purposes, which only require them to read and listen. It is recommended that the students improve their academic writing skills.
