Abstract

One of the 4C skills required by the students in today’s global community is critical thinking. Critical thinking skill is not a skill that can evolve by itself along with the development of human body. Accordingly, it requires creativity on teachers’ side. The teacher can consider strategies and methods that can enhance students’ thinking ability. One of the strategies used by the teacher in teaching language to enhance learners’ critical thinking is internet-based nature of Google docs, an online application that can enrich learning environment by transferring teaching instruments that are user-centered. The objectives of this study are to identify the learning activities designed by the teacher to develop critical thinking; and describe the activities that expose the skill and to know the students’ responses toward the activities of teaching English with Google docs. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects consisted of an English teacher and 24 senior high school students in Malang. The instruments used included observation and open-ended questionnaire. The result of the analysis indicates that the English teacher designed the learning activities consisting of three main parts:  a) pre-teaching  that focuses on the orientation and registration of students to use email or user account to access to Google App; b) during teaching which focuses on students’ engagement of remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating; and c) post-teaching  which includes sharing and providing students with opportunities to receive immediate feedback on their work. Meanwhile, the learning activities to develop students’ critical thinking not only refer to the teaching of English skills and those of language components but also integrating literary texts with answering effective questions. The students have positive responses toward the activities and they feel comfortable using technology as a medium to learn. Furthermore, they expect technology to be used in classroom as they completely adopted it in their lives. Keywords: Teaching English; critical thinking; Google docs

Abstract

To improve the quality of education, the Indonesian government has been launching anumber of teachers’ professional development (PD) programs. These, however, broughtlittle impact on the improvement of teaching practice and students’ achievement. Thispaper reports a two-year research project on a dual mode in-service training program thatcombines a classical in-service training and training via internet. The first year focused onidentifying teachers’ professional needs while the second year focused on the developmentof training packages and tried out the training model. The study reveals that scienceteachers need training both on subject matter and pedagogy. In addition to the traditionalface to face workshop, they also expect online training via internet since it allows them tohave flexibility in accessing the materials as well as consultation with experts. This studysuggests that participation in dual mode teachers PD improve teachers’ understanding ofsubject matter and pedagogy.Key words: dual mode; in-service training; professional development; science teacher

Abstract

The present research is concerned with how creative the students are in writing activities. By multi-teaching strategies, they were expected make use of various resources they could find before writing. They could feel the breeze, the sounds of the wind, the passers-by talking, and the singing of birds prior to their writing. By this strategy, the researcher would like to know how embodied approaches to teaching contribute to creativity in students' narrative writing. Writing interest and habits should be cultivated as early as possible at school through more writing practices instead of memorizing theories of writing. Writing courses in university should be designed based on a need analysis depicting students’ level of readiness before the courses start. Writing courses should not be limited to activities in classroom. Outside classroom activities and activities with various stimuli helping students to get inspirations should also be conducted. A number of fictional works (e.g. short story and novel) qualified to serve as writing models for students should be provided. Further research focusing on other genres such as expository, descriptive, argumentative, and narrative texts should be conducted.

Abstract

This study is a sociocultural investigation of the reasons why teachers use L1 in L2 classes through different classroom “modes” (Walsh, 2011). So far, a few studies regarding L1 have focused on L1 use in different classroom contexts, and none have used Walsh’s model of classroom modes. To this end, the present study used Walsh’s model which quarters the classroom context along with the Conversation Analysis techniques, to meticulously examine the classroom interactions. The classes were chosen from three different teachers in Mazandaran, Iran. A total of 6 sessions were recorded and transcribed. Results suggest that teachers use L1 mostly for managing purposes: drawing students’ attention, and making sure they have comprehended what they are supposed to do, and educational purposes: explaining difficult grammar and vocabulary, and eliciting desired structures or utterances. These findings might help teachers use L1 more efficiently and judiciously, instead of avoiding it when and where it might benefit the learners, as well as minimizing it in their classes as much as possible.

Abstract

The paper discusses direct elections of local government leaders that have contributed to thecorruption in Indonesia and focuses on the quality of electoral process. This study aimed atidentifying the contribution of direct elections of local leaders on corrupt practices in Indonesia. It applied a quantitative research method and involved 85 provincial, district and city areas assamples in the Indonesian islands of Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara,Maluku and Papua. The study proves that direct local elections have significant effects oncorruption committed by the heads of district government. Both process and quality of directlocal elections has jointly demonstrated a meaningful and significant effect on the corruption bylocal leaders. Thus, the better quality and process will immediately lower the corruption rate. Incontrast, the lower quality and process will contribute to a higher corruption rate. Partially, theinfluence of the local election process is more powerful than the quality of direct local elections, since direct local election process requires the government to spend a vast amount of funding onthe preparation, implementation, validation and the inauguration of the elect local governmentleaders. This study only involved 85 areas that have organized direct local elections. A furtherstudy should be expanded to more sample areas in order to collect more data that can completethe current research findings. Keywords: Direct local elections, corruption, local government leaders, district, city.

ICT has today become a must-have tool in school. For this, government has spent a lot of resources to upgrade the ICT infrastructure both in primary and secondary schools.  A lot of money has been spent to train teachers as well. With this investment, the government hopes that ICT can be fully utilized. However, ICT facilities can only be fully used if teachers are competent. This study was to assess the level of ICT competency among teachers in Federal Territory Labuan. In particular, it examined the differences between females and males in terms of nine components (MS WORD, MS POWER POINT, MS EXCEL, MS ACCESS, WWW, E-MAIL, OPERATING SYSTEM, MULTIMEDIA, and VIRTUAL CLASS application) related to ICT. A total of 256 teachers participated in this study. The results of the study showed that there is a small gap between females and males teachers. In some application such as MS WORD, MS POWER POINT, MS EXCEL, female teachers were more competent compared to male teachers. Abstract

The study was conducted to map the misconception pattern of chemistry prospective teachers who learned acid-base and argentometric titration. Further, it attempts to minimize misconception through a multiple representation model of learning chemistry with cognitive dissonance strategy. The first treatment was done on acid-base titration and the second treatment on argentometric titration materials. The multiple choice test with open reasons was administered to 30 undergraduate students. The finding shows that 28.6% students have the same pattern of misconception while learning in both of the courses. After the treatment, misconception decreased to 9.5% on the first treatment, and 9.4% on the second treatment. The model was found to be suitable to decrease the misconception, but could not change the misconception into “zero misconception”, especially for microscopic and symbolic representations.
