Abstract

This article focused on results of assessment of PISA on level of literacy of youngsters in a number of countries including Indonesia. Key findings comprised reading literacy, mathematics literacy, and science literacy of Indonesian youngsters and those of other countries are described. Several factors assumed to have impacts on the results of assessment covered impacts of gender, engagement on learning, family background, and school characteristics. There are several constraints faced by Indonesia that make the assessment result unsatisfying, namely, input and process of education. Constraints of education input cover 1) insufficient availability of educators and educational staff; 2) unavailable learning facilities or inefficient use of the facilities; and 3) inadequate education costs. Constraints of education process comprise 1) too much structured and heavily loaded content, and 2) teacher oriented instructional method. The constraints of education process cause instructional process ineffective. There are seven solutions that need to be organized to cope with the constraints. They are 1) the development of better curriculum, learning method, and assessment system, 2) the capacity of educators’ profession, 3) the improvement of facilities and learning materials, 4) a life skill education, 5) the development of a superior school on basic education, 6) the improvement of quality and relevance of education, 7) the use of ICT for schooling and learning system.

Abstract

Current practices of social studies at elementary school tends to be partial. The concept of social studies which is close to environment, especially local culture, has not been optimally used in the learning process so that students don’t really appreciate their own culture. This study is to develop a model of social study learning for elementary school that can help students master subject material as an effort to improve their appreciation on local culture, using RD approach modified into three steps; preliminary study, model development and model validation testing. The subjects of study were teachers and students of elementary school in Bengkulu province,Sumatra. The result of study showed that Culture-Based Integrated Learning Model (MPTBB) is an appropriate learning model to help students master subject material as an effort to improve their appreciation on local culture. MPTBB is a learning model focusing on cultural themes developed on the basis of prior knowledge of students’ culture. MPTBB has been significantly proved more effective in improving students’ appreciation on local culture simultaneous with their mastery of subject material than the currently existing learning model used by teacher. Keywords: Learning model, social study for elementary school, culture appreciation

Abstract

Since its emergence in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), proposed by Selinker in 1972, massive studies of interlanguage have been carried out in numerous EFL/ESL classrooms as it is worth researching to gain plausible factors which either facilitate the TL learning or make it suffers. Therefore, this study attempts to see the impact of English course instruction on a student’s interlanguage. The data are grammatical errors made by the student during internet-mediated texting which were later on analyzed qualitatively. The result shows that structurally all the errors are caused by direct translation from the student’s native language, Indonesian, to English. This phenomenon seems to be predictable, as during the instruction the student is provided barely with English sentences which differ from Indonesian structure. Therefore, it is expected that the teachers as well as the institution redesign the content of learning to expose students to English which might be different from Indonesian, yet will be very crucial to establish satisfying communicative competence.

Abstract

Scholars in the area of management agree that decision making is both central andfundamental to any organization. This is because the quality of decisions made wouldinfluence the effectiveness of the managers and consequently, affect the success of thewhole organization. Indeed, this also happens in the educational management setting.Drawing from an ongoing doctoral research which looked at the relationship betweenmanagerial decision making styles and organizational effectiveness among deans ofMalaysian public universities, this article discusses the formulation of a conceptualframework. The framework put forward in this paper is based on both literature anda study investigating the relationship between managerial decision making styles andorganizational effectiveness among deans of Malaysian public universities. Second, the paper also attempts to discuss the possible research issues that could justify thedevelopment of the conceptual framework of the topic. Literature reveals that there arepotential links pointing to the relationships between the variables. However, as to datethere is little empirical scholarly research conducted in the educational management andleadership setting concerning the variables discussed in this study. Keywords: Decision making styles, decision making skills, organizational effectiveness, deans.

Abstract

This article reports on a two-year-long action research project, where Assessment for Learning (AfL) was implemented in a tertiary foreign language classroom in China. It aims to seek answers to three research questions. First, to what extent can AfL impact on learner autonomy? Second, to what extent can AfL effectively improve learners’ proficiency of the target language? Third, what factors may influence the implementation of AfL? The qualitative data elicited from the interviews with learners, triangulated with the quantitative data from questionnaires, revealed that AfL is a rather effective way of promoting learner autonomy. In addition, quantitative data from a pre- and post-test lend support to the hypothesis that AfL in general achieves overall beneficial effects on learners’ language proficiency, though there are differential effects on sub-groups, i.e. female vs. male, and Shanghainese vs. non-Shanghainese. This study also pinpoints certain factors that are possibly conducive to or constraining the implementation of AfL in the Chinese EFL context.

Abstract

Early language learning for children is increasingly common, and the majority of parents and the public do not see it as superfluous or overburdening children. Moreover, teaching a foreign language to very young children has been an increasingly dominant trend in most globalized societies. While there is abundant literature that supports teaching a foreign language at an early age through language immersion programs, little is known about the efficiency of strategies used to explicitly teach new vocabulary words in a foreign language to young learners. This empirical investigation aimed to assess and compare the efficiency of two mnemonics that have been traditionally used to explicitly teach new foreign language words: the Keyword Method (KWM) and the Total Physical Response (TPR). Results indicate that the KWM is more effective than TPR in teaching new vocabulary words in a foreign language to early elementary school children.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges that six pre-service EFL teachers of a Bachelor ofEducation (Sarjana Pendidikan) program experienced in conducting field practicum. This studyemploys a qualitative research design, with a phenomenological approach. Data was gatheredthrough in-depth interviews. The interview data was then scrutinized and codified, respectiveto emergent themes through thematic analysis procedures (Merriam, 1988 in Emilia, 2007,p. 84). The findings showed that the pre-service teachers experienced challenges related tolesson preparation, classroom management, and communication breakdown within their fieldpracticum. The study concludes with a recommendation and justification for teacher preparationprograms to provide pre-service teachers with: robust theoretical frameworks in order to designinstruction; practical experience in classroom management; profound knowledge of Englishlanguage; and activities that develop strong confidence in teaching. In addition, teacherpreparation programs are endorsed to formally inform mentor teachers regarding their rolesand responsibilities in the practicum. Keywords: Pre-service teachers, teacher preparation programs, field practicum

Abstract

This paper discusses the arguments found in a student’ academic writing, namely a thesis. It attempts to show how an argument is built in a student’s thesis in the Department of Islamic Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education, Islamic University of Bandung by drawing upon the theory of Toulmin (2003). The results of this research show that verse, hadith, and exegesis become the starting point of the argument to be presented in the thesis. However, there is a discrepancy between the verses used as warrant’s claim and the data on the student’s thesis. Consequently, the argument becomes unstable because of the inconsistencies of argument elements. The implication of this research is concerned with the supervision process of a student’s thesis that should give more emphasis on how the student makes his or her arguments correctly.
