The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) is an area study journal that specializes in publishing research-based articles about Bali. The topics of articles about Bali that can be published are very diverse including Balinese culture, politics, music, language, architecture, literature, history, mass media, popular culture, tourism, economy, environment, health, law, management, religion, and Balinese customs. The journal would also like to publish articles on Bali with comparative approaches. The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) is published twice a year, every April and October. Published articles are reviewed in a single blinded manner. The Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) was first published in April 2011 by the Center for Balinese Studies, University of Udayana. Starting from April 2019, the journal is published jointly by the Center for Balinese Studies and the Center of Excellence in Tourism, University of Udayana. However, starting April 2020, the Jurnal Kajian Bali (Journal of Bali Studies) was published by the Center for Cultural Research and the Center of Excellence in Tourism, University of Udayana. This change occurred because of the reorganization of research centers at Udayana University from the end of 2019.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the perception of Hindu society on the existence of formal pasraman (Hindu style of education) in Bali. The research method used is namely the type of qualitative research. This research of descriptive data with primary and secondary data sources and the technique of determining informants using purposive sampling techniques. Methods of data collection using observation techniques, interviews, literature studies, and documentation, as well as using data analysis techniques and presentation techniques of data analysis results. The results showed that first, the background of the establishment of a formal pasraman include juridical background, religious, and needs. Second, the learning method uses is catur pramana learning method. Third, the perception of Hindu society on the existence of formal pasraman is still low due to a lack of understanding as a whole, therefore it is necessary to socialize the existence of formal pasraman.

Abstract

In the last ten years there has been a new phenomenon in the implementation of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies. This phenomenon in the simplication, the use of agents anda professional staff, so it is called ephemeralitation. This article discusses the forms of thought and the implication of ephemeralization in traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies. Data was collected by interviewing bride and groom, and professionals. Observation was done at Taman Bhuana Prakerti, Beng Village, Gianyar and Muncan Village, Karangasem and social media as wll. Documentations were collected in the form of photos of the ceremony implication and literature study in the form of books. The theory used was ephemeralization thery. As a result of the discussion, ephemeralization thought in Balinese Traditional wedding ceremony were initially rejected, but it was increasingly in demand, because it was more practical, efficient and economical. The form of ephemeralization was in the form of buying ceremonial means and using professional staff. This thought has some implications for reducing the time of ngayah (social service), so that it is more effective and the cost of marriage becoming cheaper.

Abstract

The Balinese who still maintain their cultural traditions are inseparable from the patriarchal culture with a patrilineal system which is clearly seen in married life that embraces the concept of purusa (men as a head of the family). Society is characterized by patriarchal culture which seems to dominate the position of men in decision making that raises the problem of domestic violence. This study analyzes psychological impact for those women who experienced domestic violence in patriarchal culture. This study used qualitative research with case study approach and the number of the respondents was three Balinesse women experiencing domestic violence. The data collected from interview and observation. This study concludes that patriarchal cultural became one of the causes of violence and psychological impacts that experienced by the three cases were feelings of fear, negative thoughts about themselves, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of depression, and release their anger to the child.

Abstract

The presence of jewelry casting machines in Celuk Village, Gianyar, Bali has caused a struggle among craftsmen in fighting for their business and production interests. This study aims to uncover and analyze the struggle practices. Data collection is done through interviews, observations and document studies. Data were analyzed with practical theory, deconstruction, mechanical reproduction and other supporting theories used eclectically. The results showed that the struggle was carried out in various ways depend on the capital they owned. All parties build images as an effort to maintain their existence. Various kinds of displays, product certificates, and discourse are played as media in struggling for their respective interests to win the market competitions. The struggle of jewelers craftsmen in Celuk gives birth to various forms of power relations, there are those who rule and are controlled. Power in jewelry is largely determined by space, time, and the amount of capital ownership.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the policy of distributing free laptops by the Badung Regency Government, Bali, to all 5th and 6th grade students at the public elementary school, but not to students at private school, in Badung Regency, Bali, since 2016 to develop basic education in the region. This topic is researched because it is a public policy development of basic education that was first implemented in Bali. The problem studied is how the response of stakeholders in the public elementary and private elementary schools to the policy. Data was obtained based on the results of interviews, document studies, and observations which were then analyzed by Hermeneutics theory and the Power of Knowledge. The analysis produced three conclusions. First, the policy was responded positively by supporters of the interests of public elementary schools. Second, the policy was responded to as a discriminatory policy by private elementary school stakeholders. Third, education policy is political sense for the interests of the authorities.
