Abstract

Balinese folktales should be preserved and developed in order to improve the emotional intelligence of the nation, especially elementary school children as the future generation. This article analyses the existence of Balinese folktales in character education in elementary school children in Ubud. The study on the use of folktales shows that Balinese folktales contributed to character education in elementary school children. It was shown in the folktale I Lacur which educates cautionary acts, not being envious, being stoical and helpful. The folktale Bulan Kuning also contributes to the formation of the attitude of helpfulness. Stoicism and not doing violence are narrated in the folktale Ni Tuung Kuning which can be used as an alternative in the improvement of children’s character. The folktale I Crucuk Kuning contributes to the formation of honesty, discipline, and responsibility. The folktale Angsa teken I Kekua contributes to the formation of attitudes of not breaking a promise. The use of folktale in teaching not only useful in passing on moral values of the stories but also to preserve the intangible cultural heritage.

Abstract

This article discusses evolution and present problemsof Ubud as a tourist town in the context of Bali tourismdevelopment. Ubud has always provided an alternativevision of what tourism in Bali could be. The metaphor of anOpen Fortress provides a useful lens for looking at Ubudover the past century. “Tourism” is in Ubud has alwaysbeen closely linked to an expatriate community and otherinternational economic activities. Tourism is not a onewayprocess – it is always a dialectical process betweenlocal communities and visitors (as Michel Picard told uslong ago). This process is always changing and in Ubud ithas now entered a new phase – involving a tourism/expatnexus that is quite disconnected from local community andculture.

Abstract

Pada Gelahang marriage is relatively a new form of marriage in traditional community (desa pakraman) in Bali. Commonly the recognized form of marriage is biasa (common) marriage (the wife left her house and joined her husband’s family) and nyentana marriage (the husband left his house and joined his wife’s family). This is the consequence of kapurusa kinship system (patrilineal) in traditional community in Bali. The form of Pada Gelahang marriage was chosen for those who could not hold biasa marriage and nyentana marriage, as each bride and groom was born as the only child in their family. Based on the results of the research, there were found that the numbers of couples who had held pada gelahang marriage were increasing year to year. Based on Balinese customary law, the couples of pada gelahang marriage conduct their responsibilities in two places (double), namely the responsibilities to the family and to her husband’s traditional village, as well the responsibilities to the family and to his wife’s traditional village.

This paper discusses the potential of marine tourism in Baliand its contribution toward the development of sustainabletourism. Therefore, in this paper, I willalso introduce an expanded view of marine tourism thatwould include, for instance, the observation of processionsand rituals on beaches. Exploring the interconnectionsbetween marine and cultural tourism may help us come upwith new strategies for the sustainability of tourism in Balias a whole. In addition to aiming at sharing the experiencesof Bali in managing and promoting its marine tourismpotential, this paper also seeks feedback on better waysto manage marine tourism in order to achieve tourismsustainability for the island.

Abstract

Balinese literature has a significant role in the context of how theBalinese have preserved their own cultural tradition up to now.Even though the Majapahit Kingdom in the fourteenth centurystrongly influenced the Balinese tradition in the past, but itseems that the Balinese recently also look back at their culturaltradition prior to the period of the Majapahit influence. There aresome crucial issues in relation to the above explanation: firstly, there have been widely debated on the issue around the originof the Balinese tradition. On the one hand scholars argue thatthe origin of Balinese tradition is not started from the East Javaperiod, but it was earlier than that it had been started prior tothe period of the Majapahit such as the Middle Java period inthe 8th to 9th century or, even, in the West Java Hindu traditionthat also played a major role. However, others have not convincedwith this argument; Secondly; due to globalization process, theBalinese perceive that the only way to anticipate the impacts ofglobalization is just to revitalize the local Balinese cultures byseeking at the Balinese literatures as the local sources like thebabad, paswara, and awig-awig; Thirdly; to counter the negativeimpacts of globalization, the Balinese use their local culturalheritage so that they can maintain their cultural tradition thatnot based on Balinese tradition, but also the Javanese tradition. Itis important to discuss such issue since the influences of pre andpost Majapahit cultural traditions have indeed influenced thecultural identity of the Balinese. On top of this, to understandthe concept of multiculturalism in the present day Bali, oneneeds to trace back the dynamic of interplay amongst arrays ofcultural traditions that have affected the origin of multiculturalsociety there

Abstract

The period of nation-building following Indonesia’sindependence is still little documented. The creationof Bali’s tourist industry during the colonial period isbetter documented that the re-creation of the industry inthe post-War period. This period is important because itwas Balinese who became the main agents of the rebornindustry. The industry was built on three main pillars, theprovision of accommodation, the creation of souvenirsthrough the “Artshops”, and the creation of itineraries.Building on the remnants of the colonial period, Balineseresponded to interactions with a number of key Westernfigures, using them as guides to Western tastes and needs.Although the strategy of “Cultural Tourism” is usuallyascribed to the Suharto era, it was a product of Balineseagency in the period between 1950 and 1971.
