Abstract

This paper discusses two novels and two short storiesby examining modern teacher’s characters by Balinesefictional authors. These four literary works are a novelin Balinese language entitled Bukit Buung Bukit Mentik(Buung and Mentik Hills) by Agung Wiyat S Ardhi, a novelin Indonesian language Senja di Candi Dasa (Twilight inCandi Dasa) by Aryantha Soethama, and two short storiesin Balinese language Sertifikat(si) (A Certificate (ion)” byI Made Lewis, and Ngabdi (Serving) by I Nyoman AlitSuwarbawa.By reading them in parallel way, these four works offiction are analyzed using the theory of New Historicism. It is found that the images of teacher characters in thewriters mind are identical with that in real life. The teachercharacters in these four stories seem to have changed fromthat of the traditional images of the past. Then, teacherswere described as wise, knowledgeable and idealistic men. These kind of quality only are found in the Bukit BuungBukit Menti. Whereas, in Senja di Candi Dasa, Sertifikat(si)and Ngabdi, such moral fibers are changing because of theincreasingly glamorous lifestyle. The analysis also concludes that these fictions andfacts appear together, complementing one another. Iffictions are a story and facts are history, then both appearsimultaneously.

Abstract

The existence of Hinduism in Bali and generally inIndonesia gained recognition by the state as the officialreligion through a complicated process. This article willanswer the question in the title above to see pemaskaraan(polishing) process and replicate the Balinese religion. The purpose of pemaskaraan (polishing) in order toenhance his form of religion and culture in order to lookmore beautiful than the original. Pemaskaraan (polishing)process is detected when the organic intellectualsmanage their fear of the religions of non-Hindu in aneffort to maintain the authenticity of Bali. Pemaskaraan(polishing) Balinese religion, emerged as organicintellectuals reaction against the widespread threatsof religious conversion in Bali. Pemaskaraan (polishing)realized by smoothing the basis of the Hindu religion. And replication is the impersonation of religion of themajority, so the Balinese religion is not alienated in thesociety of nation and state.

Abstract

The future of Bali’s agriculture is at a cross-roads. Tourismand urbanisation are slowly but steadily dismemberingone of the cornerstones of Balinese culture, the subak andits distinct ways of sharing water, cultivating rice andbeautifying the landscape. A combined effort is requiredof farmers, the government and society to rethink andreappraise the value of agriculture for the Balinese peopleand the economy. Such a change of perception needs toconsider the question of adequate compensation for thework farmers do in the fields, grooming 1000 year oldrice terraces, and planting, irrigating, and celebrating rice.To place Bali in a global context, I examine Switzerland’sprotective agricultural policies, rural developmentplanning and community-led initiatives which may offersome unconventional but pragmatic solutions to turn thetables for Bali’s rice sector protecting the subak institution. At last, I envisage a future for the subak and its members, anactive and proud farming community, not only famous riceproducers and fair water sharers but also recognised andappraised for their services to society as cultural landscapepreservers.

Abstract

In September and October 2013, only one week apart,Bali hosted two global events in the upper class markettourism resort Nusa Dua. The first event was the MissWorld beauty pageant, and the other one was the APECSummit. Thousands of journalists from all over the worldcovered these events. From a tourism marketing point ofview, these two prestigious events helped Bali boost itspopularity through global mass media. Historically, sincethe early phase of its development, Bali’s tourism industryhas received many benefits from global forces initiallychanneled out through the Dutch colonial power in the firstdecade of the twentieth century and later through nationaland multinational corporations. The recent enlisting byUNESCO of Bali’s cultural landscape as a world heritagesite (2012) provides yet another great example of how Balicontinues to receive global endorsement by world institutions as a unique tourism destination. This paper discusesopportunities and challenges caused by globalizationand localization phenomena in the management of Bali’stourism island destination. Bali’s experiences provide aninteresting example of how global and local stakeholdersdevelop the island tourism in a sustainable manner whileat the same time continuing to preserve its local arts andculture as one of its main attractions. While there aremany examples how both forces contribute to numerousopportunities toward the development of Bali’s tourism,it is also true to state that impacts of globalization causesvarious forms of distraction for the island’s ability to takefull control of its vast move of development.

Abstract

Today’s historis often tries to weave together unquestionablefacts with a narrative that consciously gives room to pastmyths and legends. The following article about the famous“cultural” resort of Ubud freely applies this approach to history.Myths and legends about the origin of Ubud combine withunquestionable historical facts to convey, beyond the Ubud’sraw history proper, the prevailing athmosphere of Ubud’spre-modern past. Thus the mythical seer Resi Merkandayais made to appear alongside the story of the kembar buncing(fraternal, non-identical twins) of the House of Ubud, and thehistory of Western presence and intervention.
