Abstract

This paper uncovers the nature of conditional correlations between and volatility spilloversacross bond, stock and foreign exchange in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.Using various multivariate Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity(GARCH) models, it finds the evidence of highly persistence in the conditional variance, volatility spillovers across assets, and time-varying conditional correlations in all markets. Italso provides Value-at-Risk forecast based on the estimated models. Assuming normal distribution, the tests suggest that incorporating volatility spillovers and time-varying conditionalcorrelations does not help in providing Value-at-Risk forecasts. Assuming t distribution, thetests suggest that incorporating volatility spillovers provides better VaR forecasts. Keywords: conditional correlations, volatility spillovers, VaR forecast

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to test the determinants of local investment in 26 provinces in Indonesia since 1993-2003 using dynamic panel method. Factors affecting local investment in Indonesia are market size indicator which is growth rate PDRB (X1), infrastructure indicator i.e. number of electricity capacity (X2), indicator spatial which is deensity (X3), indicator manpower that is labour force (X4) and wages/UMP (X5), and last of economic indicators that is export/ level of chartered investment counsel openness (X6). The result concludes that all variables applied in stationary research has at data level (I0), equally all variables have owned degree of the same integration. Result of panel test cointegration using parametric approach indicates that Group rho-Statistic coefficient is 8432 while Group PP-Statistic coefficient co integration is 9193. The coefficient co integration by using Group ADF-Statistic is 2540. Probability of each testing method indicates that variable applied by cointegrating at level of significance at 5%. From total 7 testing panel, got result that all research variable of co integrating or on a long term research variable has direction of the same movementKeywords: investments, panel dynamic, unit root panel, and cointegration panel

Abstract

Unemployment has been a main problem in economic development, especially in developing countries. Unemployment stems from the inability of the economy to absorb the growing labor force. This paper investigates factors influencing absorbtion of labor in Yogyakarta manufacturing industries. Variables hypothesized to affect the absorbtion are wage, labor productivity, non-wage spending, and output of production. It collects data from Indonesia Centre Bureau of Statistics, and uses panel data regression, namely common effect approach, to estimate the model. Employing Eviews software package, it finds that wage, labor productivity, and output production significantly influence labor absorption. However, non-wage spending does not significantly influence the absorption. Keywords: Labor absorption, wage, labor productivity, non-wage spendingJEL classification numbers: J01, J23, J24

Abstract

The determination of the term structure of interest rate is of great interest to both policy makers and researchers in finance and economics. Not surprisingly, a large body of literature (among others, Fisher (1907), Cox, Ingersoll and Ross (1985), and Longstaff (2000). The uncertainty of interest rates is another variable that has been widely investi-gated, since it measures uncertainty of a macroeconomic nature. It is important both for its effect on the macroeconomic variables (interest rates, investments, etc.) and its effect on in-dividual or firm investment decisions (see, for example, Siegfred (2000)). Therefore, this study will focus on the interest rate spread resulting from default risk and attempts to explain how and why the risk spread leads business cycles. This study also contribute to the existing literature by looking at the interest rate uncertainty that plays a critical role in explaining the interest rate spread and economic activity. Furthermore, the finding shows that interest rate uncertainty embodies useful information in term of predicting the growth rate of indus-trial production.Key words: interest rate uncertainly, interest rate spread, economic activity

Abstract

The natural disasters that took place in many parts of Indonesia in the last 10 years have caused an enormous losses, including agricultural sector. The objective of this paper is to estimate the magnitude of the influence of flood disaster on land price changes in Yogyakarta, using a hedonic price approach. The sample are is choosen from the vulnerable flood area mapped by Geographical Information Systems (GIS), from which farmers and land owner are selected as the respondents. The paper finds the evidence of a high level of flood stream coefficient, indicating that the flood significantly reduces the land price. The average of household’s marginal willingness to pay for the decrease in flood stream level is estimated to be Rp 2.175.  Keywords: Agricultural land, marginal willingness to pay (MWTP), hedonic priceJEL classification numbers: Q15, Q19

Abstract

Improved efficiency is the main effect expected from fiscal decentralization. Im¬proved efficiency could be gained on the presumptions that local governments are much better in identifying and fulfilling the needs of households, since they are closer to them, and in mobilizing and using local resources to pay for goods and services having purely local impacts. Once, improved efficiency could be gained, public sector performance increases.I developed a model to measure public sector efficiency (PSE) and public sector performance (PSP). I compute public sector performance (PSP) and Public Sector Effo¬ciency (PSE) indicators comprising a composite and five sub-indicators for Regen¬cy/municipolity in Central Java Province. The first two indicators reflects socio-economic indicators that take into account education and health outcomes. Three other indicators re¬flect the standard “musgravian” task for government: allocation, distribution and stabilisa¬tion. Keywords:    Fiscal Decentralization, Public Sector Efficiency (PSE), Public Sector Perform¬ance (PSP), Free Disposable Hull (FDH).
