Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the concept and spatial pattern of regional expansion in Lahat District. The method in this research is deductive method and rationalistic approach. It adopts several techniques/guidelines from the existing regulations in order to consider comprehensively the spatial pattern in Lahat District. The research uses three major criteria, which are: physic/environment, economic and social in order to formulate spatial pattern of regional expansion. The analysis of of spatial pattern based on the physical/environmental criteria produces two regions of expansion, i.e. region I (9 sub-districts), and region II (10 sub-districts); the analysis on spatial analysis based on the economic criteria produces 2 regions, i.e. region I (8 sub-districts) and region II (11 sub-districts); the analysis on spatial pattern based on the social criteria produces 3 regions, i.e., region I (6 sub-districts), region II (6 sub-districts), and region III (7 sub-districts); the analysis on the combination of three criteria (physical/environmental, economic, and social criteria) in the overlay produces  2 regions, i.e., region I (8 sub-districts) and region II (11 districts); the analysis on comparison based on the analysis of spatial pattern which regards the physical/environment, economic and social criteria indicates that the policy has more weaknesses than the research result. Keywords: regional expansion, spatial pattern, policy analysis, Lahat Distric.

Abstract

There has been a long debate on the relationship betwen investment on human resources and economic growth. This paper examines the affect of investment and three level of education, namely elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school, on regional economic growth in Central Java. It estimates a General Least Square on a pool data of 35 districts from 2004 to 2008. The results suggest that regional economic growth is influenced by investments and the growth of junior high school attainment. However the growth of senior high school attainment and growth of elementary school attainment do not affect regional economic growth. Keywords: Investment, education, regional economic growth, panel dataJEL classification numbers: O15, O43

Abstract

In Malaysia, the small and medium scale industries (SMIs) comprise more than 90 percent of the total establishments in the manufacturing sector. One of the pertinent issues related to industrial development in Malaysia is less competitiveness among the SMIs as compared to the large-scale industries (LSIs). This subsequently leads to lower contribution of the SMIs to the value added of the manufacturing sector. Competitiveness is closely re-lated to human capital possession like education, training and experience among workers in an organization.  This paper attempts to examine the impact of human capital variables on SMIs’ output or value added and labor productivity. The analyses will be based on the data of 138 SMIs collected in 1997 through a field survey. The data covers six major industries in SMIs, namely, food and beverage, wood-based, rubber-based, plastic-based, metal-based and electrical electronic. In this survey workers were grouped into various levels of educa-tion to cover the non-schooling, primary, secondary and tertiary education. They were also categorized into five groups to represent professional, technical, administrative and manage-rial, supervisory and production workers. To achieve the objective of this paper, a Cobb-Douglas production function is estimated by incorporating human capital variables as inde-pendent variables in the output, value added and productivity functions. The study shows that year of schooling amongst workers, workers training and job categories have a significant positive relationship with SMIs’ output and value added growth. Capital-labor ratio and tertiary education have a positive impact on the labor productivity growth. Keywords: small and medium scale industry, human capital, labor productivity

Abstract

This paper investigates relationship between velocity of money, inflation, volatility of money, threshold inflation, output gap, and money velocity gap for two Asean countries, Indonesia and Thailand from 1995:Q1-2010:Q4. The models adopted are Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity, Hodrick-Prescott and Autoregressive Distributed Lag models. The result shows that relationship between inflation and volatility of money with velocity of money exists in Indonesia, but it does not in Thailand. Threshold inflation does not exist in Indonesia. Meanwhile, it is found that output gap can influence inflation. In addition, the fourth model shows that money velocity gap is not related with inflation for Indonesia only. Keywords: Velocity of Money, Volatility of Money, Inflation Threshold, Output GapJEL classification numbers: E31, E51

Abstract

Poverty issues is related not only to the population of the poor but also to poverty concentration in certain areas. This research deals with concentration pattern of poverty in Indonesia analysed by Theil Entrophy index on poverty report data in 26 provinces in Indonesia 1999-2003. The analysis reveals that poverty is highly concentrated in relatively advanced provinces in Java during 1999-2003.Analysis on gap within region as well as between region in Java resulted in higher Theil index than that of other region. Overall calculation shows that there was a slightly decreasing trend in poverty concentration in 1999-2003. Contributing factors to the trend are education, health and human development quality in the region. Therefore, this research raises the urgency of reassessing the government development strategy that use to be growth oriented. Encouraging economic activities in less developed regions will contribute to economic growth and in turn increase the income of the population in the region. Keywords: poverty concentration, theil entropy index
