Abstract

The aim of this case study is to examine mathematics teachers’ knowledge of students’ thinking and its evidences in their teaching. The participants were three secondary mathematics teachers. Data were gathered from interviews and observations. While analyzing the data, the framework about teachers’ knowledge of students’ thinking was used. The findings showed that each teacher mainly considered the knowledge of students’ thinking as knowing students’ prior knowledge. They expressed that they benefited from the questions to reveal students’ ideas, encouraged their students to use different solution ways for the problems, and had ideas on misconceptions and difficulties their students might be confronted. The participants also considered students’ prior knowledge in their lessons, but they did not tackle their difficulties, errors and misconceptions unless students asked questions to them. They had the limited approaches for building on students’ mathematical ideas, promoting students thinking mathematics, triggering and considering divergent thoughts, engaging students in mathematical learning, and motivating students learning.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to develop a college student worksheet using Edmodo as a learning support tool and to know the effectiveness of peer tutor learning model applied in the learning of economic mathematics on motivation and attitude. Research used for quantitative approach and quasi-experiment method to collect data applying test and questionnaire. The sample in the study is a second-year student enrolled in a college in Serang - Banten. The sample comes from two classes. One class was used for the control group of 29 students; one for the exploratory group of 40 students. In the control group, students were taught only in a personal learning environment using peer tutor models whereas experimental groups studied through peer tutor models in the classroom were supported by student worksheet learning using Edmodo. The findings show that college student worksheet's use is better than traditional learning. That is, students in the experimental group not only outperformed them in the control group in the learning outcomes, but they also showed a higher learning motivation. Although students in both groups did not differ in their attitudes toward peer tutor models, students in the experimental group expressed positive attitudes toward Edmodo.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyze pre-service secondary mathematics teachers’ flexibility of external representations of domain and range of functions. To reach the purpose, a task consisted of thirty question items were designed. Participants of the study were thirty-eight Indonesian pre-service secondary mathematics teachers attending mathematics education department at one private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. Based on the analysis participants written responses, this paper revealed participants’ difficulties in providing a proper and consistent definition of the concept of domain and range of functions. We also disclosed the participants’ lack of flexibility in doing translation among representations under the concept of domain and range of function. In general, participants written responses to the task did not provide evidence of a solid understanding of domain and range. There are several implications of these findings offered for secondary mathematics teacher education’s program.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the cognitive process employed in problem-solving related to the concept of area conservation for seventh graders. Two students with different mathematical ability were chosen to be the subjects of this research. Each of them was the representative of high achievers and low achievers based on a set of area conservation test. Results indicate that both samples performed more cyclic processes on formulating solution planning, regulating solution part and detecting and correcting error during the problem-solving. However, it was found that the high achiever student performed some processes than those of low achiever. Also, while the high achiever student did not predict any outcomes of his formulated strategies, the low achiever did not carry out the thought process after detecting errors of the initial solution gained. About the concept of area conservation, the finding also reveals that within the samples’ cognitive processes, the use of area formula come first before students decided to look for another strategy such as doing ‘cut-rotate-paste’ for the curved planes, which do not have any direct formula. The possible causes of the results were discussed to derive some recommendation for future studies.

Abstract

Journal on Mathematics Education (JME), formerly called Indonesian Mathematical Society Journal on Mathematics Education (IndoMS-JME), is the first international journal on mathematics education in Indonesia. The primary goal of the journal is to support and facilitate mathematics educators and researchers either from Indonesia or other countries to publish their works in mathematics education. In 2010, Professor Zulkardi, the vice president of the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) as well as a mathematics educator from the Universitas Sriwijaya started the JME.  Professor Widodo, the president of IndoMS at that time, launched the first volume of the JME at the opening of National Conference on Mathematics in Universitas Negeri Manado, June 30th, 2010. This editorial focuses not only on the celebration of the achievements and challenges of JME but also the process of the growth of the JME from a local journal, national, and then to be a reputable international journal.First, as a local journal, JME started with only five articles in the first volume. Luckily, an international expert in mathematics education wrote and published their ideas.   Lee Peng Yee, a professor at the National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore, wrote an article about how to design a mathematics curriculum. Also, Professor Sembiring, from the Institut Teknologi Bandung, wrote about the history of Realistic Mathematics Education in Indonesia. Later on, many authors from various countries published their papers in the next volumes. Some of the well-known researchers in mathematics education have contributed to the JME, such as Professor Berinderjeet Kaur from Singapore; Kaye Stacey, Bardini, and Tom Lowrie from Australia; Christa Kaune and Elmar Cohort from Germany; Edyta Nowinska from Poland; Koeno Gravemeijer, Maarten Dolk, Dolly and Frans van Gallen from the Netherlands. The other authors are from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Turkey, Ghana, United States, and Taiwan. Second, the JME is nationally accredited by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education since September 2015. A year before, the Directory Open Access Journal (DOAJ) and ERIC databases started to index the articles from the JME.Finally, after waiting for 20 months since the application submitted, the JME is accepted for the Scopus inclusion since September 2018, addressing the JME as one of the reputable international journals from Indonesia. After another three months, Elsevier agreed to cover all articles since volume 9.1 in the Scopus database.  In this celebration moment, as the editor in chief, I would like to say thank you very much to all local staffs, managing editors, reviewers, as well as editorial board members either from abroad or Indonesia who have done excellent work in making JME well known and internationally recognized. Starting from January 2019, JME publishes three editions on each volume. Finally, in the future, JME has an effort to improve the quality of publication both management and the content of the articles.  Also, JME has a task to fulfil the requirements to be indexed in the Web of Science. Of course, this is not an easy task, especially for JME team.

Abstract

A mathematics framework was developed to integrate problem-solving that incorporated simulation of real-life problems in the classrooms. The framework coined as the RECCE-MODEL emphasised understanding and thinking with a view on mathematics embedded in real-life. The RECCE which stands for Realistic, Educational, Contextual, Cognitive, and Evaluation encompass the underlying principles of teaching problem solving and guide teachers in planning, designing, developing, and facilitating real-life activity tasks in developing students’ problem-solving competencies in mathematics lessons. It also explores students’ cognitive competency in their application of abstract mathematical knowledge into real-life problems based on students’ developmental status of their thinking and reasoning skills correlating to Meanings, Organise, Develop, Execute and Link (MODEL). This study investigated the affective development of the students through activity tasks developed by the sampled teachers using the principles within the framework. In total, 94 students from two high schools in Brunei Darussalam responded to a students’ questionnaire constructed to address the MODEL aspect of the framework. In particular, the analyses involved the students’ affective competencies that corresponded to a 19-item instrument within the questionnaire.  The findings showed that Brunei high school students have stimulated beliefs and positive attitudes towards non-routine problem-solving in the learning of mathematics. Meanwhile, meaningful activities developed by the teachers encouraged the development of cognitive-metacognitive and affective competencies of the students. The RECCE-MODEL framework paved the way towards understanding the relationships between effective pedagogical approaches and students’ learning, and between attitudes and cognitive abilities, and also for teachers to make better-informed decisions in the delivery of the curriculum.

Abstract

This paper was an attempt to redesign the current professional development training for Mathematics teachers in the Philippines. Mathematics teachers claimed that most training and seminars they attended ignored their local work context; was routinely and was hardly applicable to their classroom milieu. By utilizing the transformative professional development training, the teachers identified the classroom issues that had confronted them; restructured their useful pedagogical ideas and instructional plans and materials; implemented these in their classrooms; and shared their reflections on the new teaching experiences. Qualitative data were gathered from focus group discussions and key informant interviews. University researchers (3), secondary Mathematics teachers (28), and students (250) from four rural public schools in the Hamiguitan Range participated. The teachers and students revealed that their lack of self and environmental understanding were the prevalent issues that led to critical behavior in Mathematical cognition and learning. By applying the transformative education in the classroom, promising results like better teacher performance, improved students' interest, and maximized student participation were evident. This transformative professional development training adequately responded to the teachers' work needs and was recommended to other areas of learning.
