Abstract

This research aims to determine the leveling of critical thinking abilities of students of mathematics education in mathematical problem solving. It includes qualitative-explorative study that conducted at University of PGRI Semarang. The generated data in the form of information obtained problem solving question and interview guides. The results are: (1) students who are not critical (LCTA-0) only able to identify the given facts clearly, (2) students are less critical (LCTA-1), students can identify the facts in problems, (3) critical student (LCTA-2), students can identify the fact in problems, revealing the prerequisite knowledge appropriately, solve the problem but still less accurate in every stage, and (4) students are very critical (LCTA-3), students can identify the facts given clearly, mention the concept/ theorem/ prerequisite material. Based on these results, the leveling of students critical thinking abilities can be applied in a lecture at mathematics education. Keywords: leveling, critical thinking, mathematical problem DOI: dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.61.40

Abstract

This  design research type development study aims at producing a set of PISA-like mathematics task which is valid and practical as well as has the potential effects. Then, activation of fundamental mathematical capabilities underlying mathematical process related to the mathematical literacy as the main potential effect of the developed PISA-like tasks would be the focus on this paper. The subject of this study were 28 seven graders of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang involved in field test. Data collecting techniques used were students' test result and interviews. Overall findings indicate that 10 items of PISA-like mathematics task developed potentially promote students' mathematical literacy within three mathematical processes. The result also shows that the highest percentage of students' achievement was on the interpreting tasks (52.55%). While achievement for employ and formulate tasks were 40.74% and 39.63% respectively.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to investigate the act of design in discharge concept using Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) approach with Lapindo's Mud phenomenon as a context. Design research was chosen as method used in this research that consist of three phases, namely preparing for the experiment, teaching experiment,  and retrospective analysis. Based on the result of investigating from findings and the data obtained in this research, it can be concluded that the use of instructional design using PMRI can support students' understanding in learning the concept of discharge. Observing activities Lapindo mud photos, watching videos Lapindo mud, observing miniature discharge of Lapindo mud, volume of water and time of data collection are needed, and finding discharge of Lapindo mud are conducted in this research.

Abstract

The study was report the findings of an only post-test control group research design and aims to analyze the influence of problem-based learning approach, school level, and students' prior mathematical ability to student's mathematics critical thinking ability. The research subjects were 140 grade ten senior high school students coming from excellent and moderate school level. The research instruments a set of mathematical critical thinking ability test, and the data were analyzed by using two ways ANOVA and t-test. The research found that the problem-based learning approach has significant impact to the ability of students' mathematics critical thinking in terms of school level and students' prior mathematical abilities. Furthermore. This research also found that there is no interaction between learning approach and school level, and learning approach and students' prior mathematics ability to students' mathematics critical thinking ability.

Abstract

This paper offers a framework for mathematics lesson design that is consistent with the way we learn about, and discover, most things in life. In addition, the framework provides a structure for identifying how mathematical concepts and understanding are acquired and developed. This framework is called ELPSA and represents five learning components, namely: Experience, Language, Pictorial, Symbolic and Applications. This framework has been used in developing lessons and teacher professional programs in Indonesia since 2012 in cooperation with the World Bank. This paper describes the theory that underlines the framework in general and in relation to each inter-connected component. Two explicit learning sequences for classroom practice are described, associated with Pythagoras theorem and probability. This paper then concludes with recommendations for using ELPSA in various institutional contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how set model can help students' understanding of addition of integers in fourth grade. The study has been carried out to 23 students and a teacher of IVC SD Iba Palembang in January 2015. This study is a design research that also promotes PMRI as the underlying design context and activity. Results showed that the use of set models that is packaged in activity of recording of financial transactions in two color chips and card game can help students to understand the concept of zero pair, addition with the same colored chips, and cancellation strategy.

Abstract

The aim of this research is produce a set of PISA-like mathematics task with Indonesia natural and cultural heritage as context which are valid, practical, to assess students’ mathematics literacy. This is design research using type of development research with formative evaluation. A total of 20 students of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. Beside, 10 experts were involved in this research to assess the feasibility of prototyping in terms of content, context and language. Walk through, documentation, questionnaire, test result, and interviews are way to collect the data. This research produced a PISA-like math task is as many 12 category of content, context, and process valid, practical and has potential effect. The validity came empirical evaluation of validation and reliability testing during small group. From the field test, we conclude that the tasks also potentially effect to the students’ mathematical literacy in activating the indicators of each Fundamental Mathematical Capabilities. Keywords: development research, PISA task, mathematics literacy, fundamental mathematical capabilities DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.1.2812.1-8

Abstract

The present study aims at examining the use of open-ended approach in cultivating senior high school students' mathematical creative thinking ability (MCTA) and self-esteem (SE) in mathematics viewed from school category. The subjects of this research were the students grade XI at three schools; high, middle and low category in Kota Serang, Banten Province. In every school category, two classes were chosen; one class was the experimental group which was taught by open-ended approach, while another class was a control group which was taught by conventional way. This quasi-experimental research employed MCTA test and SE in mathematics scale as the instruments. In general, the research result shows that the MCTA improvement and SE level of the students who are taught by open-ended approach is better than those who are taught conventionally. The results of students' MCTA and SE viewed from school category will be further discussed. Keywords: mathematical creative thinking ability, self-esteem, open-ended approach

Abstract

This research aimed to describe how algebra tiles can support students' understanding of linear equations with one variable. This article is a part of a larger research on learning design of linear equations with one variable using algebra tiles combined with balancing method. Therefore, it will merely discuss one activity focused on how students use the algebra tiles to find a method to solve linear equations with one variable. Design research was used as an approach in this study. It consists of three phases, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment and retrospective analysis. Video registrations, students' written works, pre-test, post-test, field notes, and interview are technic to collect data. The data were analyzed by comparing the hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) and the actual learning process. The result shows that algebra tiles could supports students' understanding to find the formal solution of linear equation with one variable. Keywords: linear equation with one variable, algebra tiles, design research, balancing method, HLT
