Abstract

This paper tries to analyze the ideology of jihadism as developed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), its genealogy and its influence in Indonesia. This paper argues that ISIS does not represent the replica of other jihadist ideologies and movements such as al-Qaeda, regardless of its historical relation in the past. Rather, ISIS represents itself, a focal point where its ideologues eclectically coin and pick some religious doctrines with their own way and method. Even though ISIS claims that it follows Sunnî school of thought, in reality it poses extreme ideology which diametric-ally differs from the mainstream Sunnî ideology. Due to its extreme ideology, its existence has been rejected not only by the mainstream Muslim scholars, but also by their fellow jihadists. Despite such a rejection, it still appeals tacit sympathy and support from some jihadist group in Indonesia such as Ba’asyir’s led-Jama’ah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT) and Santoso’s clandestine Mujahidin Indonesia Timur. Abstract

This study is inspired by the problem of claims against terrorism as an expression of momentary interest, activities program, and products of history constructivism. To solve such problem, the study uses a critical historical analysis approach of Karl Rudolf Bultmann. The study concludes that terrorism, as a part of the wholeness of history, has played critical roles, namely the control role to the tyrannical-dominance and the role of ideology actualization. With the provision of institutionalized historical legacy, terrorism is not merely a temporary expression but it penetrates into borders of period of the history. In addition, with an emphasis on problem solving at the contemporary era, terrorism action is charged to provide a momentary response. Conceptual sources of this study are the view of Ahmad Jainuri about the character of terrorism and the view of Diniesh D’Souza on the profile and the main motive of terrorism. Based on evidences, data, and discussions of experts as well the terror doers themselves, the author argues that the essential meaning of terror—as a compelled action—lays in the fact that it is a noble meaning of historical and ideological aspects as well as a transcendent honor, which cross over the boundary of all conditions or all kinds of worldly reward. Abstract

This article highlights the evolution of Islamic civilization starting from its glory during the classical period until its collapse in modern times. This article also discusses radicalism as a part of inhibiting factors of the development of Islamic civilization in the modern era. Radicalism is a model of understanding which tends to be destructive. This model of understanding has been a fertile ground of the emergence of rigid and normative theological understanding. Hostile attitude of the followers of radicalism often trap them into combat actions of others, even to the extent of murder, especially to the Western people. Such radical attitude has been also manifested in the form of destruction of public facilities. This destructive action has led to the devastation of civilization, which has been built by a nation. The conditions of a number of Arab-Muslim countries, which have not been free from prolonged internal warfare, prove that radicalism is an obvious blocking factor in the development of Islamic civilization in the modern era. Abstract

In 1980s, the development of Islam in Indonesia was characterized by “intellectual boom” as a great result of success of some Indonesian young Muslim intellectuals who accomplished their study abroad. This phenomenon has been a positive sign for the development of Islam in Indonesia as world’s largest Muslim country. One of the expected contribution of Indonesian Islam is the development of Islamic thought. One of Muslim intellectuals who had tried to respond to this expectation was Kuntowijoyo. Kuntowijoyo had produced many works in various fields, in addition to history which becomes the major of his field studies. One important thought of Kuntowijoyo’s intellectual legacies that should be appreciated and reconstructed is the idea of Prophetic Social Sciences (ISP). This article attempts to reconstruct and elaborate the ISP, which has been initiated by Kuntowijoyo, into Prophetic Sociology. In doing so, the writer refers to Kuntowijoyo’s works and other relevant sources to the issue. Keywords: prophetic social sciences, prophetic sociology.

Abstract

This article proves that there is a significant relationship between the Islamic philosophy along with spiritual ecology and the ecological crisis and its solution. Loss of views and beliefs of spiritual ecology are among causes of environmental damage and the universe. Therefore, the restoration of spiritual ecology and its relationship to ecological values will play a pivotal role in the conservation and rescuing of natural and environmental crisis. Spiritual and Islamic philosophical values have ecological implications and consequences that should be the attitude and lifestyle in creating a harmonious relationship between God, man, and the universe. Eco-philosophy presents what so-called the values of spirituality as its base and emphasizes that humans remain to be special from other creatures. However, such privilege has to be a burden for humans and they are obliged to maintain and preserve the universe with spirituality and based on cosmic theology as coined in Islamic philosophy. Abstract

The article discusses the concept of sufistic thinking of K.H. Ahmad Asrori al-Ishaqy, the  murshid  (the spiritual guide) of al-Qâdirîyah wa al-Naqshabandîyah  tariqa  and the founder of al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School in Kedinding Lor 99 Kenjeran Surabaya. In this article, the writer focuses mostly on the stages of the sufistic thinking of Kiai Asrori, because there are many sufistic concept that he stated. In addition, the writer tries to unveil Kiai Asrori?s concepts on sufistic realm which are implemented in daily lives, not only by himself, but also by his pupils and his followers. The purpose of this research is to describe the sufistic concept of Kiai Asrori, focusing on the stage (maqâmat) which has been stated in his public sermon, his statement stated for certain people, and also by his scipts. Besides, the purpose of this research is also to describe about how to implement his concepts in daily lives. The writer argues that the concept of the  maqâmat  stated by Kiai Asrori is different from other Islamic mysticism figure before him not only in terms of numbers but also in orders. The most significant difference is that the followers do not have to follow the stage step by step. According to him, his followers may choose the  maqâmatwhich are suitable with their ability.

Abstract

This article discusses the relevance between Sufism and modernity in the perspective Muhammad Zuhri. This study concludes that transformative Sufism which has been initiated by Zuhri is a sort of Sufism which is grounded to the spirit and values of the fundamental teachings of Sufism, shown in accordance with the context of its time, and discussed with the problems of human beings in dealing with the dynamics of life. Modern life has led to the problem of alienation. Of course, the alienation does not merely occur within individual dimensions (self-consciousness) of human (alienation of consciousness), but it also occurs in their relationship to the nature (ecological alienation), and the relationship among human beings (social alienation). The point of relevance is how the human are subsequently able to build their self-consciousness toward the universe and their human brothers. Such awareness is then contextualized into the dimensions of the problems of modern man. The contextualization of this Sufi teaching makes the transformative Sufism not only actual, but also relevant in order to “liberate” the modern man from entanglement of various problems they deal with. The spirit of Sufism brought by Zuhri seems to be laden with social actions and communal aspects.

Abstract

This article discusses the theme of Sufism, modernity, and the relationship between the two. This study concludes that according to Maḥmûd, Sufism can deliver the people towards true knowledge. In order to obtain this knowledge, the method of ittibâ‘ to al-Qur’ân and Sunnah is used. The method is implemented through the purification of the soul. This method differs from the two methods used in modernity, namely the Cartesian philosophical method and Baconian observation method. The last two methods are only able to produce empirical-rational knowledge. According to Mahmûd, both methods are only appropriate when used in the context of physical science, not metaphysics and moral issues. The last two issues are more appropriate when viewed from the perspective of Sufism, which is guided by revelation. Maḥmûd argued that the relationship between Sufism and modernity is a complementary relationship, in which each of the two aspects is a complementary entity to another. It means that modernity will be spiritually empty without Sufism on one hand and Sufism will also be more meaningful when supported by modern science on the other.

Abstract

This article explores Sufism in the perspective of K.H. Idris Muhammad Jauhari. It will also reveal the patterns of his mystical thought. In this study, the author finds that: firstly, in the view of Kiai Jauhari, Sufism is an attempt to straighten out the intention of heart and to understand the essence of deeds conducted by human beings in order to live a life to reach its final destination in accordance with the will of the Creator. Secondly, the patterns of Kiai Jauhari’s mystical thought are: a). Sufism developed by Kiai Jauhari built on a tradition of tasawuf akhlâqî (consistency to maintain Islamic orthodoxy, humanist Sufism, activist and functional, dichotomous relationship pattern between the servant and the Lord as well as the urgency of dhikr Allâh in the spiritual journey toward the Lord), b). Sufism developed and offered by Kiai Jauhari is an effort to redefine and reorient so that Sufism in both theoretical and practical aspect is no longer positioned as being elitist, mystical, and individualist. Kiai Jauhari has developed inclusive Sufism, which is easily accessible by all people. Thirdly, according to Kiai Jauhari there are six steps to become a Sufi, are: îqân al-nafs (convincing one’s self), taqwîn al-niyyah (straightening intention), al-dirâsah wa al-istitlâ‘ (learning and studying), al-tafakkur wa al-tadabbur (thinking and contemplation), al-takhallî wa al-tahallî (emptying and filling), and al-tajallî (manifestation).

Abstract

This article explores the K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari and the urgency of riyâdah in tasawuf akhlâqî. The forms of riyâdah of Kiai Hasyim in tasawuf akhlâqî are: pilgrimage to the Cave of Hira, pilgrimage at the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad, frequent fasting and eating little, praying Tahajjud, maintaining friendship with the neighbors, performing Tarâwih prayer by reciting the whole al-Qur’ân, praying Istikhârah frequently, always keeping the congregational prayers, and practicing wird qunût nâzilah and hizb al-falâh. The reason and purpose of riyâdah conducted by Kiai Hasyim is to remember the struggle of the Prophet, to implement the Sunnah of the Prophet, to prevent lust temptation, to draw closer to God, and for the propagation of Islam. Moreover, the reason and the core objective of various riyâdah conducted by Kiai Hasyim is to draw closer to God by concentrating on coaching about morality and soul treatment.
