Abstract

The city of Surabaya grows rapidly affecting the physical urban areas development, especially the tourist area. One of it is Ampel Region that is defined as a region of religious tourism and cultural heritage buildings by the city government as stated in Mayors Regulation Number: 188.45 / 251 / 402.1.104 / 1996. The area has potential for tourism and high economy development, but it does not compliment each other. So, it is necessary to review and analyse Ampel area to find a suggestion to harmonise the trade and economic development in order to continue supporting the function of the area as religious tourism. The methods used in this paper are descriptive approach and the application of sustainable development goals criteria, named four pillars of sustainability. Urban heritage plan will be developed specifically in the area of Ampel Mosque and street vendors (PKL) around it. The basic form of the tourist area has a broad scope, including the regional areas, specifically residential areas that will be affected by the system. However, this can improve the economy and income of the local communities. Reviewing and structuring this region will broaden up Ampel's impact to the life pattern of the people around. The results of this study are several physical elements such as infrastructure (circulation and parking), open space, socio-economic and sustainability improvement by providing solutions in the form of recommendations for the design of sustainability implementation and efforts to help non-physical problems in accordance with the results of the analysis of the Ampel area.

Abstract

Culture as a system includes ideas, concepts, rules, and meanings. It underlies the expression of human life and a system of common sense as a result of the social process. It emphasizes an abstract thing rather than concrete ones. Behavior as cultural expressions deals with the relationship between one another. The resident's social activities cannot be implemented as desired which causes them to find new places that can meet the user's behavior and culture. If the behavior and community space used are appropriate, they will continue to develop their lives in the same place. Furthermore, they can attract people from other blocks to join. The process of utilizing existing facilities and treating nature according to the social system of low-income users need environmental adaptation. This study explores the existence of community spaces outside the building in a flat environment related to the behavior and culture of residents as users. This assessment is based on community togetherness in community spaces, either planned or unplanned. The research method used is Descriptive-Qualitative-Exploratory, with interviews of selected respondents. The number and the origin of residents who gathered in the community with various activities are the indications of the suitability of the community space. Low-income residents generally meet somewhere with a variety of diverse needs. The existence of planned community space is used maximally. This space is used by many people for various needs. For low-income residents, this place can meet their interests simultaneously. It means that the place will be used based on the functions, the fragmentation of togetherness, focused activities, consistency, the user's character, affordability, and environment order.

Abstract

This study is based on the premise that residential satisfaction in adulthood may be influenced by satisfaction with childhood residential locations. Residential location is not only a physical setting but also part of the interactive process that shapes an individual's relationship with their environment through sensory experience, memory, and perception. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires distributed to adult respondents from various demographic and geographic backgrounds. The responses were qualitatively analyzed using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding methods. The results revealed a significant correlation between satisfaction with childhood residential locations and satisfaction with current residences after relocation or staying, including housing location choices. These findings provide valuable insights for urban planners in designing residential environments that accommodate the diverse preferences of the community. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of considering childhood experiences in understanding future housing location needs.

Abstract

This study rethinks architectural programming as an innovative process, emphasizing the integration of contextual elements, the relational blending of multiple functions, and the adaptive reuse of existing spaces as recreation over time. Moving beyond the traditional understanding of programming as problem-finding-solving, this research redefines it as a dynamic framework bridging theoretical insights and practical design applications. Through a qualitative case study methodology, the paper examines three landmark projects with similar functions by Bjarke Ingels Group—8 House, The Mountain, and Urban Rigger—to explore the transformative potential of programming. The analysis positions programming as an integrative tool that aligns spatial, functional, and contextual dynamics to address both immediate and future architectural challenges. Program mixing with relational functions is conceptualized as a strategic approach that harmonizes diverse functions within a single design, fostering innovative and hybrid solutions. Adaptive reuse, reframed as a multi-time design response, focuses on revitalizing existing structures to meet evolving societal and environmental needs. These case studies illustrate how programming establishes a dynamic framework that enables architects to creatively reimagine constraints as opportunities. By emphasizing the principles of design analysis—realization, organization, and integration—this research contributes to the discourse on programming as a catalyst for architectural innovation and transformation. It proposes a shift in practice that highlights programming as a generative and responsive framework, inspiring a rethinking of architectural methodologies in the face of contemporary challenges.

Abstract

The fashion industry has become one of the most influential sectors in Indonesia's economic growth. Batik, as part of the fashion industry, has a sales concept with a retail store system because it is considered to require specific perception stimuli and shopping experiences. In the direct marketing process, one of the most important aspects to consider is atmospheric architecture or environmental atmosphere architecture. Atmospheric architecture involves designing an environment to evoke specific emotional responses in potential buyers, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful product purchases. With the existence of this concept, the atmospheric architecture elements of the environment as decision-making supporters must be studied and optimized. A finding is needed regarding the store atmosphere elements that influence the creation of an optimal shopping ambiance and experience in the batik retail environment. The method used is a qualitative method involving in-depth interviews and photo elicitation. Data processing was carried out using Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software to classify the research findings and was followed by homogeneous validation of the results with the respondents. This finding shows how store layouts and display designs affect sales. It also suggests ways to use these ideas in batik stores to increase product purchases.

Abstract

Vernacular architecture is identified as a form of architecture that evolves with the times. The concept of this architecture remains relevant because rural communities tend to build their homes based on longstanding traditions passed down through generations. However, changes in vernacular architecture can occur due to various factors, including adaptation to modern developments and residents' needs. In this article, the evolution of vernacular roof forms from the past to the present is analyzed, focusing on the vernacular roofs of houses in Slagi Village. Through a comparative study of old and new vernacular house roofs, the evolution of vernacular roof architecture is explored, and the factors influencing roof shape changes are investigated. Descriptive and comparative analysis approaches are used to review the differences in roof forms, and the cultural and environmental implications of these changes are understood. Findings show significant changes in vernacular roof forms from the past to the present, influenced by technological advancements and architectural trends. This article provides deep insights into the transformation of vernacular architecture and highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the context of changing times. With a better understanding of the evolution of vernacular architecture, it is hoped to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding and preserving cultural heritage for future generations.

Abstract

Urban kampungs in Indonesia are increasingly being transformed into tourism destinations as part of urban revitalization efforts. However, these transformations often focus on aesthetic improvements and economic outputs without adequately considering the role of community participation in shaping the physical environment. This study investigates how spatial transformation in Kampung Lawas Maspati, Surabaya, is driven not only by policy interventions but also by internal community agency and collaboration with external actors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method, the research draws on in-depth interviews, field observation, and spatial mapping through GIS. The analysis focuses on three stages of participation: planning, implementation, and evaluation—and is structured around key transformation categories: public space reorganization, tourism infrastructure integration, and the expression of place identity. The findings reveal that initial transformation was driven by local leadership who mobilized community action toward kampung revitalization. These efforts laid the foundation for formal recognition as a tourism kampung in 2016. The community not only initiated environmental and spatial improvements but continued to co-develop infrastructure with institutional support, including CSR involvement. This changes—community-led in vision, institutionally supported in execution—demonstrates a sustainable form of transformation grounded in local agency. The study highlights how participatory action and place-based leadership are critical to the success and longevity of tourism kampung development. It offers a framework for understanding how physical transformation is shaped through evolving participation and collaboration from the community.

Abstract

Buildings account for a significant portion of global energy use, making facade design a critical component in efforts to achieve sustainable architecture. In tropical climates, challenges such as high solar radiation, temperature, and humidity increase the demand for innovative facade strategies that improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency. Proven strategies such as shading devices, roof overhangs, and natural ventilation have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing indoor heat gain and increasing occupant comfort. This study aims to analyze current research trends in sustainable architecture with a focus on building facade design and its impact on thermal comfort. Bibliometric analysis was carried out using Scopus-indexed publications from 2016 to 2025, with keywords related to building design, thermal comfort, and facade efficiency. VOSViewer software was used to map keyword networks, visualize publication trends, and identify dominant themes and research clusters. The analysis includes 51 relevant publications and reveals a growing interest in facade-related energy research over the last decade. The majority of research is focused on engineering, energy, and environmental science, with global contributions from China, the United States, and Italy. Keyword clustering identified three core research themes: architectural design strategies, building envelope technologies, and thermal comfort performance. Despite a growing body of research, this study highlights a gap in facade design research specifically adapted to tropical climates, where humidity and solar radiation issues require more context-sensitive solutions. These findings underscore the need for more localized and multidisciplinary research, as well as the integration of adaptive and intelligent façade systems. This research contributes to the knowledge base by identifying research patterns and gaps, offering a foundation for future investigations into facade innovations that support energy-efficient and thermally comfortable buildings in diverse climate contexts.
