Abstract

The objectives of this study entitled The Influence of Materialism Towards Characters Development in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby are (1) to figure out the materialism described through the character of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. (2) to learn the influence of materialism towards the characters development of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. The writer used library research to analyze the analysis. The main data is taken from novel of The Great Gatsby. Some theories used to analyze the data are American Dream, Character, Character Development, Marxism, and Materialism. Moreover, the approaches used in this research are sociological approach, psychological approach, marxism approach. The portrait of materialism in The Great Gatsby can be seen through the main characters namely Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Both of them represent materialism in two ways which relate to the wealth that they have and their effort in pursuing their American Dream. Furthermore, their materialistic lifestyle also influences their characters development. It makes their desire become unattainable and their efforts directed towards a negative outcome. Jay Gatsby suddenly is being so ambitious and being spendthrift along with the story. Besides, Daisy Buchanan is also being a careless and shallow person who sees nothing except money and material luxury. Keywords: American dream, materialism, character development

Abstract

Flipped instruction becomes an innovative strategy to be used in the development of technology in which students can access the learning materials online. Before class activities, students are given with adequate materials, thus when they are in class they can focus to do practices related to the topic. Several studies have investigated the use of flipped instruction in the teaching learning process and it can be the response for the today’s needs of students who have difficulties in engaging classroom activities due to the lack of preparation or understanding towards the given materials. In this research, researchers used flipped instruction to increase the engagement of second-semester students in Intermediate Speaking Class, State Polytechnic of Madiun in the academic year of 2018/2019. The researchers conducted classroom action research for 22 students in two cycles. The findings showed that the students engaged in the teaching-learning activities very well and they were well-prepared to speak in front of the class. Abstract

Noun phrase is used when a single word is not enough to describe a noun. Ambiguity and mistranslation might happen in noun phrase translation that needs different structure depending on two languages. This research has purposes to find out the translation shifts that occur on noun phrase in Instagram caption translation, to reveal the translation techniques applied in translating noun phrase from ST to the TT and to assess the translation accuracy of noun phrase in TT from the ST. The theories used in this research are Catford’s theory of translation shift, Molina and Albir’s theory of translation technique, and translation accuracy in Nababan et al TQA (Translation Quality Assessment). This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are 125 noun phrases from Instagram caption and their translation into Indonesian. Questionnaire is also distributed to three raters as the data of this research. The analysis shows that there are six kinds of translation shift in translating the data; intra-system shift is 32% (40 data), structure shift is 22.4% (28 data), unit shift is 20% (25 data), level shift is 9.6% (12 data), none shift is 8.8% (11 data), and class shift is 7.2% (9 data). There are 9 translation techniques used; literal translation is 42.40% (53 data), borrowing technique is 20.80% (26 data), establish equivalent is 16.80% (21 data), calque is 7.20% (9 data), discursive creation and reduction each are 4.80% (6 data), linguistic compression is 1.60% (2 data), and linguistic amplification and transposition each are 0.80% (1 datum). In term of translation accuracy, 66 data are accurate with 58.20%, 27 data are less accurate with 21.60%, and 32 data are inaccurate with 25.60%. Abstract

The research aimed to discuss patriarchy in Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy”. There were two objectives of the study. The first was to portray the patriarchy in Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy”. The second was to analyze the symbols of patriarchy in Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy”. This research applied four theories. They were ideology, patriarchy, oppressor, and symbol. The ideological and structural approaches were used in this research. The result of the research showed the portrayal of patriarchy in father’s and husband’s figure. From the father’s figure we can understand that a parent who is the dominant ruler of his daughter’s life will leave such a painful loss after his death comes so that his daughter loses his guidance in life. While, from the husband’s figure we can learn that patriarchy also happens in a marriage. Furthermore, the symbols dealing with patriarchy is revealed in the description of confinement life, fear, regretful loss, and unhappy marriage. Keywords: ideology, patriarchy, oppressor, symbol

Abstract

The objectives of this study entitled The Capitalist Dominance in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist are (1) to find out the capitalist dominance described through the character of Mr.Bumble in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. (2) to find out the impact of Mr. Bumble’s capitalism toward character Oliver in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The writer used library research to analyze the analysis. The main data is taken from novel of Oliver Twist. Some theories used to analyze the data are Character, Marxism, Capitalism, and Setting. Moreover, the approaches used in this research are sociological approach, psychological approach, marxism approach, ideological approach, and historical approach. For the result, the writer finds the capitalist dominance of Mr. Bumble. He follows the Oligarchic Capitalism and he controls and exploits Oliver without enough food and salary. He also becomes opportunist, snobby, and a wicked man. Moreover, from the impact of Mr. Bumble’s capitalism, Oliver becomes abandoned in the capitalist society, and becomes a social anxiety disorder child. Abstract

The research is concerned with American Dream in Arthur Miller’s Death of aSalesman. The objectives of the research are to describe Willy Loman’s badattitudes and actions, describe Willy Loman’s good attitudes and actions inachieving American dream, and to analyze the results of the American dreampursuit in the story. The first theory that is used in this research is American valueto figure out Willy Loman’s bad and good attitudes and actions and the secondtheory is American dream that is used to analyze the results of American dreampursuit. While, the method of this research, the writer used descriptive method,and for the technique of data collecting, the writer used document analysis. Then,there are two approaches that are  used in the analysis namely sociological andpsychological approaches. In the research, the writer found the bad attitudes andactions in the story of Death of a Salesman through the main character, WillyLoman are maintaining his pride, manipulated by his thought, keeping on hisunreal social status, and pretending to be rich.  Moreover, the good attitudes andactions in this story are working hard, initiative and full of ambition, getting ofopportunity, getting ready for the competition, and struggling for his family’s life.Furthermore, the results of the main character in pursuing the American dreamalso found in this story, that are losing the real identity of life, getting jealous ofthe success of the other’s life, living in life of full the illusion and delusional,being a stubborn man, being an arrogant man and the last ending with theunhappy ending life. In conclusion, the main character, Willy Loman could notreach his happiness of his life that is caused by his wrong perspective of his mindabout achieving the American dream. And he decided to end his life by suicidehimself to get the money insurance for his family.

Abstract

The research aims to discuss the kinds of swear words and thepurposes that consist in The Wolf of Wall Street. The objective of the research are todivide the swear words into groups based on their kinds and describe the purposes aswhy the swear words is used. The main theories that are used in this study are slangand swear words. The method of this research is descriptive research and thetechnique of data collecting used is library research. The result of the research are,there are many kinds of swear words that can be found based on Hughesclassification and the purposes as why people swearing is based on partridgeclassification. Based on Hughes classification there are seven kinds of swear words,swear words related to sex, swear words related to excrement, swear words relatedto name of animal, swear words related to personal background, swear words relatedto sexual activity, swear words related to taboo, religion, or oath, the last is swearwords related to mental illness. The result for the reasons as why people using swearwords are expressing anger, shock, disappointed, excitement, happiness, seriousness,confused, and proudness.

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) find out the qualities of woman as characterizationportrayed in the main female character, Juana and (2) explain how they influenceKino’s character development in John Steinbeck’s The Pearl. To analyze the data,this research used qualitative method. The data of the research were theexpression related to (1) the qualities of woman as characterization portrayed bythe main female character, Juana, and (2) how they influence Kino’s characterdevelopment in the work of John Steinbeck’s The Pearl. The results of thisresearch show the qualities of woman portrayed by the main female character,Juana and how they influence Kino’s character development. Juana, is portrayedas a woman having characterization such as being responsible, strong, loyal andcaring, responsive (including the action she does) and so forth.The qualities ofwoman possessed by Juana as her characterization in the novel seems to givemore courage and motivation, convince him to do more as a husband, and offersuch a strong intuition to deal with problems so that he could consider andreconsider the action he is about to take.
